mprcomp Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I have a relative who has just been given a very old PC. It's a citrix 333 with 32 mb of Ram. 4mb are taken by the online graphics card. It has Win98 installed on it. They want to use VirginMedia broadband but they said it would only work on an XP machine. I think VirginMedia are wrong and that it should work on any PC. If I install for them a network card I think it should work as the modem virgin supply is an ethernet cable modem. What do people think? Mprcomp

Even the Mozilla site agrees... Minimum Hardware * Pentium 233 MHz (Recommended: Pentium 500MHz or greater) * 64 MB RAM (Recommended: 128 MB RAM or greater) * 52 MB hard drive space The old Cyrix chips never performed anywhere near the 333mhz they were supposed to feel anyway... I have a cellar full of 333mhz Cyrix chips/mobos if anyone wants them! Horrible things!
webman Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Atleast it is up to date... I recently made a Win98 user happy by installing it on an old PC as he was still on IE5; and the latest websites kept causing IE to crash and/or throw up errors.

Virgin Media supply Ethernet cable modems these days so provided you have a network card installed and have configured it for DHCP leases it should work just fine. Just be aware that you won’t have all the advancements and security of more modern operating systems. Cheers Ben

leon Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 I got Damn Small Linux running on a P133 laptop with 80MB ram. It's dual boot with Win98/firefox (poss v2) on the other partition. Both OS's connect to to a ADSL router wirelessly. I guess you'll need the modem drivers to support W98. If not just buy a 3rd party router. Don't listen to the first line tech support -often they just follow a script.
tom_newton Posted July 23, 2007 Posted July 23, 2007 Only snag I can see is the registration page may not work in older versions of IE, and you may also find that the box is rooted rather quickly. Certainly you'll need some form of firewall - I believe the NTL box bridges straight through :-/
