Server Room Next to Lift

Hi

 

Currently going through plans for our new building and it has been proposed that the server room location is next to the lift e.g sharing a wall.. does anyone have any knowledge if the servers have any issue being near the lift when it is in use?

I can't see the lift itself causing any problems as it's just a big metal box on a string.

There are a couple of research papers about lift motors causing interference with some electronic systems though.

I think there are some standards relating to this, and if everything lines up in that respect it should be ok.

 

Worst case scenario you could shield the server room, but you would end up with a WiFi / mobile phone deadspot.

Be good if they are also providing ducting alongside for network infrastructure which could be one of the reasons for th location.

You want to check that is doesn't cause to many vibrations which could affect the devices within the server room.

It also depends what type of lift you are refering to. We have two styles, the traditional metal door one, and then the disabled version which is a moving floor with a hand rail.

Seriously, the motor equipment does kick in with a thump and could cause some EMI. I would have thought it was well suppressed but it might be worth voicing your concerns.

Thanks guys this is all very useful! .. yes this was my thoughts too lol.. wouldn't need to use the stairs much!! worst case scenario i can ask them to switch the server room with our office as the server room door is inside my office and there is a riser on the other side of my office, thought i do wonder if they are thinking of running the cabling up the lift shaft.. though at the same time if the lift is noisy i do not want my desk next to it lol...

Many years ago we ran thick ethernet inside a lift shaft and every time the lift moved out spiked the network traffic it tool a while before it was noticed the data interference coincided with the lift movement.

if it's 2-3 floors then it will be a hydraulic lift not a winched one.

Lift motors are very well suppressed these days so I wouldn't expect you to get any problems. Is the lift equipment on the same floor as your server room? The actual equipment needed for a hydraulic lift carrying over a couple of floors is pretty minimal. The lift motor room for ours is a cupboard of about 6' x 2'.

 

The other thing is how much the lift will be used - ours is very rarely and not by students unless they are disabled (or have a injury that stops them getting up and down the stairs)

One of our server rooms is next to a lift and has all the lift gear in the room. No problems as far as I know. We can't store stuff next to the lift gear though for insurance purposes. The servers are at the opposite end of the room.
