Hello, all.. Our authority uses Glow, which is an externally hosted Sharepoint-based service which can be shared out between all schools in Scotland. (Probably over simplifying it, but there y'go). Glow are migrating to an Office 365 type environment. Our client workstations (mostly 7 Pro with IE9) have Office 2003 installed (yeah yeah, I know). On the 365 environment, we can open xlsx files in the Excel Web Part. If we want to open the file within the client Excel we run into problems. XLS files - open fine XLSX - Excel opens with a message saying we couldn't log you in, or words to that effect. The clients have the latest (last?) Office 2010 Compatibility Pack open. If I double click an XLSX file, it opens fine. If I do a Save As on the Sharepoint/365 based doc, then I can open the Saved As version fine. If I change the Document Library prefs on 365 to have it open on client instead of in browser, then it opens correctly. It's only if I use the Edit in Excel drop down in 365 that it all goes wrong. The nearest Google-fu I can find is a suggestion that the MIME types are wrong at the server end, but that seems unlikely since it's 365 themselves?? I know I won't be able to edit the 365 documents live on the workstation (unless someone can prove otherwise - which'd make me very happy). I get the same issue with DocX files, so I'm assuming it's something to do with the Compatibility Pack not understanding SSL?? Any suggestions gratefully received. Other than upgrading to Office 2010/2013 I mean Cheers, Gerard

Having a mental block here - must be something to do with the heat! I have a list of "surname space forename" in one column. I need to separate them into two columns - how do I detect the space in order to capture each part, to place in separate columns?

Does anyone have any ideas? We've set up a new SIMS installation at a school with whch we're federated, and I'm trying to set up individual reports containing assessment data. The reports sometimes preview correctly, but never print, export or upload. More than 50% of the time they don't preview either. What happens is the progress bar comes up, displays "generating", then as the generation finishes and it's about to preview/print/export, I get a windows Error message "Sims.net has encountered an error and has had to close..." I've worked through the relevant checklists regarding tables and security settings and random number and all that, and I've tried to generate on three different versions of Word. I'm currently using Office 2003, and that's the only office suite that's installed. It's been most stable this way. It's a VM ware machine running Windows XP, but I've tried it on a physical machine and found the same difficulty. I've been working on this for three months now, I've missed at least two deadlines, and I'm still no nearer a solution. I could produce a mail merge with results exported from SIMS into excel and then merged into Word, but that's not going to be the best way to have the most up-to-date results and that won't upload to Linked Documents. I'm seriously struggling with this. I've been doing exactly the same thing at my usual school for the best part of four years without so much as a sniff of trouble, I just can't see what's going wrong. I maintain that the problem lies with our SIMS install, but I can't get Capita to admit to anything. Anyone ever come up against anything like this before?

Having a strange problem with a new MS Office 2003 install on a Windows Vista Laptop. All the software is working fine apart from Word, which just hangs on the splash screen when you try to open it. I have narrowed this down to a problem with the Normal.dot file and deleted it. Word then opens fine and when you close Word, it creates a new Normal.dot file. However!! When you try and open Word again you are back with the same problem.... I have reinstalled Office several times and cleaned up all the leftover files and registry keys but cannot get rid of this problem. Any ideas? Cheers

At present one of my academys is running 2003 and the other is running 2007, We are at the point where We want to bring them both in line. If we upgrade the 2003 one to 2007 we loose the ability to do ecdls as I understand its only compatible with 2003 at the moment, If we downgrade the other one all work done in 2007 format will be incompatible. Any ideas on how to proceed would be much appreciated.

I'll keep it short We need to install Office 2007 onto a machine running Office 2003. Simple. Problem. We need to install 2003 AFTER 2007 due to a complicated issue Any hints or tips?

Hi all, I have found a bit of a loop hole in regards to using Microsoft Office 2003 to navigate through the network to a shares such as Netlogon on the Server. A knowledgeable staff member or pupil could potentially navigate through the 'entire network' or even (having knowledge of the server name) use a hyperlink to get access to potentially dangerous folders. Does anyone have any ideas how this might be locked down? I have had a look through group policy and the MS Office ADM templates to see if there is a solution there but I haven't found anything. Thanks in Advance!!! Kieran.

The Head of ICT wants Office 2007 on the Staff whiteboard machines but also needs to keep Office 2003. The problem is if you load one version of a program, close it, and then load the other version, it goes through a little install thing each time. Is there any way to prevent this and still have both versions installed? If not I'll make it so they get the Office 2003 install bit because that's a quicker one and you can just cancel the boxes anyway. Just thought for User-Friendliness not having either happen woul dbe best. I know and I've argued that having two different versions isn't supported, and will have problems but the ICT teachers say they are willing to put up with that to have both versions.

when ever i sent to print from any office application i.e. word or excel, it crashes saying ms office word has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience. the error message also mentions that the office application will try to recover the work. Reinstalling office didnt work and office has got all the updates on it. does any one know of a solution.
