The problem I found (and sorry for the slow response- I've left schools in favour of Local Government employment) is that the 1&1 custom repositories either seem to be corrupted or altered with custom packages that simply do not work with later versions. As 1&1 don't support later versions I guess that's not a huge surprise. It is probably easiest to use an FTP client such as Filezilla to copy and paste standard repositories from a local reference source (but these MUST match the version of the OS in use at the remote site- you need to upgrade incrementally to reach the latest version- although you can upgrade directly between LTS versions), otherwise you can try Googling for a list on the net. If necessary a local reference copy in VMWare Server/Virtualbox will provide you with the standard list and be a useful test bed before you roll out changes to your "live" server. As always- backup, backup, backup again and then backup the backup.........

I have been asked to provide "sketchy"/"doodle" headings for some pages on a non-commercial website. I've found some good fonts but they are free only for personal use. Does anyone know of any good font sites for more general non-commercial use, or even better fonts that are free for all uses? Alternatively are there any good sites that allow you to filter by licence? I'll be using the fonts to make image headings with alt tags, so I don't need to distribute them, and I have access to Windows, Apple and Linux (Ubuntu) computers if there are packages that come with good font selections. You MUST register with Adobe at Adobe - Flash Player Licensing if you want to install Flash Player on multiple computers, even internally. Yes it's free software, no you can't just distribute it to your computers without this licence. It is however free and is usually granted within a day. Once you've heard back you'll be sent a link where you can download full and minimum install EXEs as well as a MSI for AD (or presumably) CC3 distribution.

IIRC From a previous Belkin Bluetooth dongle I owned, the Belkin website support section has information on how to change the dongle to use the built in Microsoft bluetooth handling XP post SP2. Try searching their support section under your model. Definetely worth a try.

FWIW The problem is related to the driver and not connecting the printers themselves as- a) The problem happens immediately when opening or creating a new photoshop image. b) Still happens when I changed the TCP/IP port on the server (using the same driver) to point to a HP printer in storage that has been switched off for weeks. c) Does not happen when connecting to the same TCP/IP port using a Postscript driver.

If anyone is experiencing this issue it appears to be related to the default printer in use and in particular incompatabilities with Ricoh PCL5 and PCL6 drivers. Updating the drivers for the default printer did not resolve the problem even after a spooler or computer restart, but changing the default printer in use had an immediate effect. The problem was exacerbated on our site by the fact most computers default to a Ricoh Aficio MP C4500 printer in the library although thankfully Art (who are the most frequent users of Photoshop) default to a Ricoh photocopier using Postcript drivers to support Mac printing. With the library printer as default, opening a second file in Photoshop (either creating a new file or opening an existing PSD or image) consistently caused photoshop to crash with- Changing the default printer to one with a PostScript driver or the Adobe PDF virtual printer immediately resolved this, even when you then print from photoshop to the original PCL printer and afterwards open a new file. As default printers are often set for very good reason, rather than restructure our entire printing strategy around one product I have written the below VBS script- I then changed the shortcut to Adobe Photoshop CS3 to point to the VBS script (must be located on the user's C: drive to avoid security warnings about running scripts from remote locations). I changed the VBS icon back to the original Photoshop icon so as far the EU is concerned nothing has changed. The script runs silently and changes the default printer when Photoshop is run to a "Photoshop safe" printer. This printer could equally be a HP (we've been unable to replicate any problems with HP PCL drivers), another model you've found to be working or one with a Postscript driver. Similarly the script could be adapted not to change the printer on your working printer, but change it on all others. Or variations of the theme. In our case default printers are set by login scripts so on next login the original default printer is restored and all is well. Users simply need to be taught to select the printer for printing when working with Photoshop. This problem has been replicated internally with both the originally shipped and latest drivers available on the Ricoh Support website for a limited range of Ricoh Multi-Function products on Windows XP SP3. I have not been able to replicate it with HP PCL drivers. I am unable to comment on this problem with printing equipment from other vendors as we do not have it installed. Any changes you make to your own network as a result of reading this post are at your own risk and neither I nor my employer can be responsible for any problems that may result.

Last time I checked Adobe weren't providing deployment licenses or tools, I've applied and will let you know how I get on in testing.

Check for updates for the software in question. Certificate Revocation means that the content is signed but with a certificate that has been revoked by the issuing agency. This could be for a variety of reasons. Effectively it means your content cannot be trusted as having come unaltered from the stated source, if downloaded potentially a huge problem, on a official CD perhaps less so. No doubt someone with more insight than me with have something to add.

Firmware update? Incidentally, I'm trying to persuade myself I don't want one and failing. How wrong am I?

OpenDNS has catagory based filtering which is very effective, with user control over additional blacklist/whitelist domains. The pornography filter in particular is very effective - I've had problems trying to buy items of clothing for my wife from that "filthy" High Street store M&S as it even blocks lingerie and swimsuits on the higher settings.

I'd second OpenDNS - accounts are free for home use and you can customise the block/allow list.

Well, some good news in that I've found you can slipstream patches onto the MSI with the command and I've spent the afternoon messing around with that. For Adobe Acrobat Professional 9 patched to 9.3.2 the resulting share folder was 1.7GB in size (something I really hesitate to deploy via Group Policy) and the install took 12 minutes when only running on one computer. What's worse is that, following the installation, clicking on the Adobe Acrobat Professional icon on the start menu took a FURTHER 11 minutes to configure before eventually loading. I can't possibly deploy that across the network. I can deploy Reader 9.3.2 relatively quickly and with the EULA pre-accepted using the Acrobat 9 Deployment kit, but the team here aren't keen to lose the premium features of Acrobat Professional and see making the default file association Reader as a step backwards. What's happening at the moment though is that the scripting install isn't always finishing (staff clicking the cross etc.) and Dreamweaver or Photoshop need to be run before Acrobat for it to be properly registered. Staff opening attachments from e-mails are then calling us up and complaining it's not working. Has anyone managed to speed up the deployment of Acrobat Professional 9 (preferably fulled patched as I did) or any advice on how to remove the requirement to run a CS3 component before running Acrobat Professional 8? There are both security (patch level) and usability issues at stake here.

I know you have decided to to split and that may well be the best for you, but should you later decide you want to make another go of it or if anyone else is in a similar situation you may want to try What is the course? - The Marriage Course in addition to the excellent services of relate. Although Christian based it is for people of all (or no) faiths and both those who are married or simply in a long term relationship. We only got married six months go but took it to get into good habits in our marriage and hopefully give us the skills to mitigate or even ward off future problems. The course deals with forgiveness, communication, dealing with family, sex (i.e. how to make it great- not to never have any!), meeting each other's needs and love in action. We've learned a lot and have set aside a date night every week just for us (no Edugeek, Facebook or other distractions allowed) and been able to talk about some really useful stuff between ourselves that we otherwise may not have had an opportunity to do. The course is based around a dinner for two each session with a workbook and a DVD, no group work is involved. In case that helps anyone.

To clarify what Tom has said, you can turn on antivirus on the appliance which will scan all web traffic, in addition to any running on the client. This then gives you another layer of defence.

What exactly is it you are trying to do that you are struggling with? Specifically which application and to do what?

Tom has mentioned from time to time about Smoothwall's plans to improve submission to blacklist workflows. Has any progress been made on this as the current process is currently a huge disincentive to reporting.

Do you use the American power management ADM for this or do you script it?

Similiarly Wordpress has an RSS feed- and you could host this yourself, even use it directly and theme it in such a way that people don't notice that part of your site is Wordpress (doing away with the iFrames).

I just bought a Netgear DGN3300 router with 802.11N and it does prevent traffic from the "guest" networks (you can have two- one b/g and one n) from pinging or connecting to traffic on the wired or wireless restricted networks. There are different DHCP servers for each SSID but I haven't actually tested if traffic is VLANed by the router or if it's the VLAN on the ProSafe switch that sits behind it that keeps them from accessing my wired equipment. I'll test changing the subnets on a guest and trusted wireless laptop this evening and see if I can ping or connect in either direction to see if this is VLAN security or just using different subnets. As far as I can tell though, the guest network heads straight out to the internet with no LAN access.

I'm afraid if you'd asked yesterday I could have provided it but our 24/7 currently only has from the 10th May onwards due to the rolling recording. We stress to our staff that requests should be made within two weeks of broadcast, or three at the latest, to ensure we are able to provide a copy.
