We're undergoing the Organisational Review in Suffolk at the moment, but it's all a bit confused. Money is a massive issue so whilst my school and associated others in the pyramid are facing closure, other middle schools will stay. Personally I think it's a good system. (Middle/Upper)

Sounds like a good idea, for some locations. However I don't really see it working that usefully above primary level. It's essentially a thin client setup isn't it? What happens when teacher leaves themself logged in and says to kid A "oh just work on my profile" Kid A shuts down for a laugh and the rest of class looses their work. In short, nice idea but I won't be queuing up for one.

@dhicks, when you get that finalized that would be awesome. I was thinking of trying to put a php/MySQL app together, but my code skills swing between limited and non-existant. Sounds like an excellent plan though. Looks like I'm going with SIMS profiles for now... joy!:rolleyes:

I'm tempted, but being a touch slow on the A/V side am confused. It's got a Composite A/V out on it according to the website. So how could I hook this up to a TV with just SCART inputs?

If it's public I expect people aren't going to be happy with something tinkering with their proxy settings, I can imagine the cry now "I went to the school cafe, browsed the web and now I can't get online at home... must be a virus" How about a dedicated DHCP server for the cafe with the setting gateway pointing to your desired proxy?

I got an old box, put Ubuntu server on it then configured vsftp. Does the trick nicely. It's also a LAMP server so with a bit of sym linking I was able to assign home directories pretty much straight into the apache folder /var/www so each student group could upload and test webpages.

Is SIMS Profiles a standard bit of SIMS or is it a purchased add-on? I'd like to integrate with existing systems where possible to save on data replication.

Hi All, My SLT is looking for a new way to do our academic reports. So what software do you lot use? At the moment each teacher/form tutor/HOY etc writes a single A4 report for each child (so 14x subjects plus 1 pastoral) At around 450 pupils we're going through tonnes of paper. The run we had last time resulted in over half of all reports being reprinted due to errors (wrong spelling, font, class, name, border alignment, you name it). Ideally I'm after a DB style bit of software where staff can pick the student and enter a few comments and then it all gets packaged into one printed page. I may be totally out of luck, but I eagerly await your suggestions.

I've converted partially, Mint 7 at work, and on my laptop (dual with XP). Girlfriend Dual boots Mint7 with XP on her laptop and I'm going to put it on her new netbook on Thursday (at her request). I agree, it's nice and simple and has the important thing like flash and java ready to go out of the box.

Two for me, one work which anyone and his dog can have but spends most of it's life on silent at the bottom of my kit bag (and gets voicemail checked occasionally) and a personal one which is used for keeping in touch with friends family etc. If I don't want to be bothered I either turn it off or onto silent as others have said, too useful to give up.

both laptops same spec and OS software load? Same version of virtual box? Is it a case of not having a working X install on the borked ones?

I push it via GPO with a UNC route to a share, do find some images get cached, but a quick cache re-initialise tends to take care of that.

Feel free to use/modify it as needed, I've got the original xcf file for gimp if you'd find that useful. I'll be putting together some other ones, but am waiting for requests from the Lit/Eng dept.

I've been asked (and done it) by our Literacy co-ord here to produce a There/Their/They're wallpaper for all the students as part of our literacy push, so got me thinking, does anyone else do this (messages on desktop?) and what sort of stuff do you use. I went through a phase last year of doing a different wallpaper every day with interesting items taken from Wikipedia's "What happened today page" That lasted about a month then got students creating daily Christmas themed backgrounds for December. @FN-GM - reseting user passwords in AD? I use the "Terminal Server Client" and remote in to the server. Just like I did on Windows. Running Linux Mint 7 on a Dell Optiplex 360 (booted and online including me logging on, in less than 60 seconds)

Unless it says in your AUP that passwords should not be shared out then technically I can't see anything "wrong" has been done. However common sense dictates that emailing all staff with one student's username/password isn't clever. I would 1)Reset password for student 2) Email all staff reminding them not to do that in the future 3) Liase with staff member concerned and talk them through accessing the work in the student's home directory (staff have r/w access to student work*) *very heavily audited.

I always though i was technically part time (due to hours etc) but after reading this thread. Full time 35hrs a week Term Time Only. No problem with overtime if needed. But project has to be talked over with the HT and authorised. OT or TOIL available, and they will make me take it. Emergency OT never been an issue. I couldn't justify any more hours really, nor working during the holidays. Edit: School details Around 450 Kids 120 desktop machines 70 laptops All AV kit Just me to look after it.

Welcome, I started working in my school just over 18months ago. All I had at the time was a newly aquired A+ Tech qual and was working on my MCDST (now on to MCSA).
