About half Windows 7 and half XP currently. Not seen any need to replace the XP machines as they are still doing the job but expect to have a gradual replacement to Win 7. Big surprise to me is your praise for Windows 8 - I had a look and hated it!

Anyone got information on SMART UF55 Overhead Projectors on maintanance and bulb life please. We have a few of these and there doesn't seem to be an obvious filter to knock dust out of plus the bulb hours on most of them is closing on 3,000 hours now.

We are going to have a few Apple TV's in classrooms to enable staff to use their iPads easily with IWBs. In one of our science classrooms the teacher persists (partly by lousy room design) in using his IWB as his screen with the desktop PC; with wireless KB and mouse that runs the board. Connecting the Apple TV to the system requires the wireless password to be put in and unfortunately it's open key not asterisks that come up. Any way round this other than the obvious one of replacing the desktop pc with a laptop?

Just a bit of a clarification toward your response @matt40k - 40K? that'l be your salary then I reckon It's not training that I was asking about but my newness to having SIMS on a dedicated server with the school at the same time going from 3 or so Admin staff accessing SIMS to the whole Admin and Curriculum staff.

I hope this doesn't seem a muppet question to some of you:) We are this week moving over to SIMS class registration / behavioural management etc. Our SIMS lives on a dedicated server and we have bought in support from CAPITA who want to upgrade SIMS to the latest release today. My bursar just asked me the best way around this - staff will be wanting to carry our their behavioural reporting at the end of the school day so are likely to be wanting to be logged into SIMS. How do you other SIMS users plan in upgrading?

I'm trying to test our network speed using a crossover test at the point where it's delivered from the SWGfL prior to our backbone switch. I am told that to do this I need to connect there using a crossover cable. I have a crossover cable but trying it get no Internet access to carry out the test - I'm presuming I need to give a static IP address or something to the PC I'm testing but what?

I have a friend who is trying to move his Camcorder tape collection to his PC to enable him to transfer his collection to DVD, he has decent software but it's not happening. Bit scant details at present but any suggestions please?

It was the failing HD all the time. Downloading the fresh copy of Win 7 Home and installing that to the new HD sorted it. The other various problems I encountered doing it were down to my clumsiness I reckon - not seating things back in cleanly being one of the main problems I encountered! The final issue I had to sort on it was finding the Realtek LAN port had stopped working post the various updates. Stopped working and was no longer visible in Device Manager! Searching various Forums I discovered this was a fairly common problem with a 'green' update the manufacture had sent out. Shutting down, removing leads and battery, pressing the on button for about 3 minutes then reconnecting and restarting saw it visible again and I was able to enter the Advance Settings for the Device and disable the power save setting. Happy laptop now and on the way I have learnt loads confirming my believe that Desktops are a heap better to work on than portable devices

An update on this wee beastie. Running either the Dell on-board tune up software of that built into Norton 360 continues to see both report imminent Hard disk failure. Oddly the Laptop seems pretty stable and usable though. I have created a restore point. re-run both the on-board Maintenance Create a fresh System Repair Disk and Created a Fresh Backup to an external HD. I have Also run up Clonezilla and tried to create an image but that reported a failure in both partition mode and disk to disk mode. I replaced the existing HD with a Toshiba 500GB disk specifically listed by the supplier for the Laptop. The Laptop has a OEM Windows 7 Home version installed but with the new disk in place I tried a Windows 7 Pro DVD and was able to try a repair but it failed. It looked like it was doing a repair but then went away to check the HD which it reported could take an hour or more – after five or so hours I gave up. I have checked the new HD in an external caddy off an existing laptop and it looks like it’s identically partitioned to the current disk and reports as healthy. The old disk is now back in the Laptop and is running fine but still reporting imminent HD failure. I'm now pretty deft at stripping and reassembling the laptop but the case, particularly the keyboard is getting 'tired' of being taken apart. My friend didn't make a BU of the OS when he got the laptop nor since. I have now spent £45 on the new HD and a lot of time. I'm not keen on shelling out another £70 or so on buying an OEM Win 7 Home. Suggestions on a way forward would be most welcome.

I'm currently working on a friends Dell Inspiron N5110 Laptop. It was to simply replace the hard drive but I have run into further problems. The failing HD would not save as a clean image for Clonezilla to restore from. So, back to the original HD and reassembled. Having now tried various options I was giving Clonezilla one more go when up pops a low power message - the power supply is plugged in and lit. Next thing before I had a chance to remove the Clonezilla CD from the reader the Laptop shut down and won't restart. i suppose this is motherboard related but where do I start?

Update. Made an image with Clonezilla but it reported as incomplete because of the state of the HD. Fitted the new HD and sure enough Clnezilla has been unable to restore it. I'm pretty sure my friend who owns the Laptop won't have created a restore disk of any kind. Is Dell likely to be able to supply a copy I wonder? If we can't get a replacement OS disk from Dell looking at Amazon the OEM version is available at about £70. Would I be ok to pop that on and restore his files from the backup I made?

Thanks @RJohnson91 I'm surprised that you haven't had a heap of thanks for posting this up. I'm also wondering if anyone in other Regions has succeeded with the information you posted up with getting round the Grid Filters? I just added the various suggestions that the responses so far have generated to our filter as sure as eggs are out of chickens rear ends our little dears will have been trying.

I'm working on a dodgey Dell Inspiron N1510 which is a month or so out of warranty and has recently been playing up. The owner thought it was a problem with Norton 360 which it has on it, checking it out though the hard drive looks like it's about to fail. Looking replacing the HD up on U-Tube it's a right bar steward to replace the 500GB little monster which involves near enough complete disassembly and reassembly of the laptop as for reasons best known to the designer of the N5110 the flaming thing is fitted under the motherboard. I'm looking for a replacement HD if anyone would like to offer a quote plus any advice would be welcome as well.

Classroom printers are a PITA. Best trying to get them to print to centrally located contract copiers I find - best being cost effectiveness and if you get the Admin Staff to maintain them least hassel to you. Where I have been pushed into allowing classroom printers I tend to go for the Samsung CLP680ND. It comes almost ready to use out of the box and has a super web interface (mind it's recommended that on older Samsungs you change the default password as it's been recognised as a weak link).

Popped it one one workstation and gave up on it in frustration. It's now under the table waiting till I have the courage to have another trial with it!

That's a cracker of an answer X-13 i seem to spend a heap of time trying to keep on top of an Excel spreadsheet where I try to inventory the kit along with warranty info but it never seems to accurately reflect what's in the classrooms! l
