Smoothwall content filter with bluesocket wireless
ICTNUT replied to ICTNUT's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Nope not using smootie as a transparent proxy, using NTLM Identification (Terminal Services compatibility mode) So my next question would be how do you have the smoothie setup with more than one authentication method? We do want to be able to log all the kids and thier access and would like to do the same for the wireless access but if that is not possible just making sure that the wirless internet access is filtered (strict) would suffice. -
Smoothwall content filter with bluesocket wireless
ICTNUT replied to ICTNUT's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I have setup AD (transparent NTLM) auth through the SSL web page on the bluesocket and authentication works (these are unmanaged laptops and mobile devices). On the status page for the bluesocket I can see the users that have authenticated but they cannot surf, Smoothwall is still coming back with unknown username or password and tries to stick them in the unatuhenticated users which I have setup as a default block everything. See that the bluesocket bit is ok I will assume that there is still something I need to do on the smoothwall.... -
Smoothwall content filter with bluesocket wireless

Ric_: Where are you setting the NTLM pass-thru as I am sure if I can do this it will all work also but I must be blind as I cannot see where it is set? -
Hello people, as the title suggests we have a smoothwall content filter and we are also using a bluesockt wireless setup. What I want to know id if anyone has setup thier smoothwall to allow bluesocket web access but still have it filtered? OUr setup is as follows: BlueSocket : LDAP / Radius authentication using web portal for login information or machine based authentication. Smoothwall : LDAP / AD authentication (not at the office but I think ident with terminal services) I can get the wireless clients to connect to the network and authenticate no problem this issue is that a username and password is NOT being password to the smoothwall and content filtering fails so user are unable to browse. How to setup smoothwall so that the wireless clients can surf the web but still be filtered? Answers on a post card please......

Very nice ! The only thing I would say is having your admin area fully accessable to the outside world is not a good idea. v1.5 due out at the end of the week will secure this and would advise you wait until then before you make the status area available. Other than that well done

The new package will do the following: Create classes based on the timetable Allow for meta courses so multiple classes can be linked to a meta course, when this happens the link in the timetable changes to link to the top level meta course Users (Students and staff) are auto enrolled on the courses as per their time tables Group are auto created and named the same as the course code from the time table with users (students) being auto added to them. If you are using meta courses the user permissions and group cascade upwards into the meta course auto enrolling students on the meta course (this is something greatly lacking in moodle itself) There is alot more in the pipeline like parental access and attendance data but I believe this is a little way off.

We never really got the docs in that link to work. You may want to PM Penfold as he is the guy who did the docs in the first place and now has a package that you can buy from him to do this all for you which does work and very well.

@mullet_man; a refresh does re-ping the item but that is from the perspective of the server that is hosting the monitor. When a connectivity check is done a single ICMP echo or PING is done and in turn gets a single response unlike the ping responses you get from the windows command line (4 of them) so it is possible that there may not be a response if for some reason at that point in time there is congestion on the network but if there was a second or third ping the response would be there. v1.5 which I am putting the finishing touches to has a more streamlined connectivity check and you have the ability to define how many times an item must fail prior to notification being sent out (email or desktop popup), that should provide more stability during the initial checks. We have been using the latest BETA at a couple of schools monitoring between 50 and 150 items plus services on a 5 minute refresh and so far all is looking good.

I use the latest version on a Quad-Core 4Gb ram PC and I dont really see that much of a hit, but then I am only monitoring the Cisco gateway nothing really that intensive.

@zerohour: this is what you need PRTG Network Monitor - intuitive network monitoring software the freeware version allows for 5 sensors to be checked.

@ceebster: Firstly have you got the site setup as a dedicated site in IIS? Can you attach any screenshots of the problem you are having?

Yes you could be right, in order for the server monitor to function correctly you will need to configure the firewalls to respond to ICMP echo (PING) requests and open it up on ports TCP 135, TCP 4168, UDP 9256 There is also an issue of you try to check services on the server that the server monitor is hosted on up to v1.4 of the monitor v1.5 fixes this problem No there is not, v1.5 does have a failure log which would give you an idea as to why the failure is occuring. This could be your problem, we have not tested the server monitor in a scenario where it will interogate across multiple domains so this could be where it is failing for you.

Ah OK yes you only need to add the username there is no need for the domain part. I have gone some way to redo this method and use impersonation of the user accessing the monitor and this in part has worked ( for connectivity or PING ). As for your suggestion of grouping services I can see how this would be of benefit from a time point of view however v.1.5 due out at the end of the week will allow you to add all services and then "multi select" ones to remove so you do not have to do them one by one. This would actually be faster than having to create the groups.

You can add extra groups directly to the database in the table called tblGroups however the next version (v1.5) out early next week will allow you to do this via the admin area.

I am about 98% sure this is a permissions error as it only happens when you try to do an update to the database. As a test can you add the everyone group to the data folder with full control and then do an update to the database, if I am right you should see no error.

@jimothy: Most likely reason is that you are running the monitor as a sub directory of an exisiting website due to the way that the jquery and ajax configurations files have been put in place the monitor must run as a dedicated site. The readme.txt file has full instructions on how to set this up and should take no longer than 5 mins to do.

I have been a big follower of the stargate franchise ever since the original film and i have bought into it in so much as I have all SG1, SG Atlantis, and the films on DVD and have really enjoyed them. SGU started off well as far as laying the initial story of how they got to become where they are but it is starting to get a little worrying that it is going nowhere. We are now onto episode 5, a third of the way through the season and we are non the wiser as to what is going on or the purpose other than "get home". We have been to one planet, no other life forms have been encountered, and there is way to much infighting going on with Dr Rush (Carlyle) coming across a little like he is on his own mission and does not give a monkeys about any of the crew which we all know is not the case. Either I have missed something or this is starting really slow. Considering they have the same writers as they have had on previous SG's it is a little disapointing, i do hope it picks up soon.

If the connected device will respond to a ping then you can add this already in the same way you would add any other item for connectivity check. As far as additional feature are concerned i.e. lamp life, usage hours etc. this maybe a little harder as I do not think there is a standardised method of checking this across different makes and models of projectors. I do see the benefits of adding these but it will take some investigation in order to add it to the monitor, I will add your request to the list.
