Yeah I got the cheap ones but they've been fine on all the Win8.1 (then subsequently Win10), only fail if I've done a clone HDD -> SSD on a Win 7 machine. I guess when it installs it sets a flag to treat the drive differently or something, which then wasn't changed as I cloned the drives rather than re-installed. Dunno just guessing.

We also have this set up, but it's using SCCM so the person being viewed gets the green bar at the top telling them so, and they can terminate it if they wish. Probably a good compromise between both sides that really.

Sandisk. We've got about 200 of these, I think it was 7 were on Win 7 and 6 failed (all Win 7 ones).

If you can access system time from WMI I suppose theoretically just using a WMI filter based on the time might work.

We've got a standalone Startech duplicator and eraser that we've used where we're moving something with peculiar software/settings that were set up so long ago nobody knows what they were - so fresh install would be very difficult, we did this with I think 10 Win 7 PCs. Although all the SSDs since died... guessing Win 7 didn't know they were SSDs.

We ended up setting up the Google School thing (as it's free) and we only use that for logging in to Sketch Up, I turned all the apps off except the ones needed for Sketch Up to work. I let it dirsync on a schedule and we set up ADFS for the authentication so it's using the same passwords as 365/AD.

Does Impero actually unlock the session, or just log it off? I can't see how, without serious hacking of whatever msgina.dll is these days, it could possibly unlock you into their session without the password.

If they look like this: they should have a USB connection. The power connection is that combined power/serial mess but you can leave serial disconnected at the PC end and just use that cable for power, then use USB for the data. Don't forget you're on max 5m USB or going via cat5 adapters or they'll get upset.

Also if your classroom is laid out in a way you can stick the CCTV camera above the teacher's desk, aimed at the class, then they will be out of shot unless they go walking round the room anyway.

Usually a device will request the same IP it already has when renewing a lease (which it is then given providing it hasn't already been given out to a different device), so if you are lucky it will have the same IP now as it did then. One hour is incredibly low if it's for anything other than a guest wifi scope, think we have our scopes with PCs on set to the default of 8 days.

Way round this is to set the permissions on the printers to e.g. only allow staff to print to staff areas. Then even if kids connect for some reason, they won't be able to print anything to it. (We have to swap "Everyone - Print" for "Domain Users - Print" on all of ours as otherwise anybody in the trust can print to any of our printers if they're listed in AD)

Took us 6 months to get a phone line 20m away from where an existing 40 pair cable terminates (and it had 36 spare pairs). That involved 7 separate visits there they did nothing and went away, including saying they'd have to run a new cable from the street and need a pole installing - the following visit they asked me why the pole wasn't up (?! not my job to install poles for OpenRetch!) 8th visit someone came and just installed the line from the 40 pair and went - which was what i'd tried to get all 7 previous engineers to do. So don't expect it to be quick or done competently.

Unfortunately looking at the TCO only helps if the leadership actually care and give you the extra funds now to spend on the kit, in order to save money in the long term. Most don't seem to care about IT that much (or won't cut somebody else's budget in order to bump up the IT budget). I'd say you're lucky in how your trust is set up in regards IT spending as you can actually look long-term and get better kit.

Wasn't for MLS but when I cancelled our Virgin leased line they ignored me, wrote a letter and sent recorded delivery, kept a copy of the letter and downloaded the proof of delivery and then just didn't pay when they sent the invoice.

What does Effective Permissions say if you put in the username of whoever can't edit the files? (one of the tabs in advanced security)

Still, I'd have expected a cab to take its power feed from the power going TO the lamp post, not be hooked up inside the lamp post ready to fail whenever someone drives into it. Given that they have to dig the path up to get the cable from cab to lamp post, surely hooking up to the lamp post feed underground would be a better option.

Well done them, but powering a data cab off a street lamp sounds a bit dodgy in the first place....!

From my experience as one school on a shared filtering platform, vs having our own, all the problems come down to the fact multiple schools are sharing a filter. Doesn't matter how much you spend on hardware, the filtering company will go "Yeah it can support 1Gbps and 10,000 users if you use $hardware" only to discover, no it can't. So by all means use a bundle so long as it's a filtering appliance dedicated to you.

So... where's my prize then?
