Hello again, I am currently still going through the Installation guide for Cups, Samba, Kerberos and PyKota as written by Ric_. I think it's going OK although i have now run into a situation that i am a little unsure about. This is how to extract the CUPS drivers into the correct folder as mentioned here: I am using Ubuntu 7.10. The package is in the .RPM format which this version of Ubuntu can't seem to recognise. I have downloaded alien and converted the package to a .deb package but now i am unsure as to what to do next. Can i just install the packe as normal or do i need to do this a different way? TIA.

What's the best way to configure permissions on Joomla? What does each group assignment give in the way of permissions? Should this really be in it's own thread? Sorry but the above statement jogged my memory that i wanted to ask this.

My advice would be to go to a store when you are feeling upto it and test out the range that they have. That way you can choose the one that you feel most comfortable in. It is nigh-on impossible to choose a seat over the web or have one recommended as each persons choice would be different. It's not much help i know but that would be my advice. And i wouldn't worry too much about the price (but within reason though i think) as as someone said it's your health and you should purchase the one you feel most comfortable in not the one that fits the budget. If the one you like best stretches then wait a little longer if possible and try not to use the one that you don't like. I used to work in Staples and so had to sell these things and nearly everyone who came in chose chairs that you wouldn't think they would like (based on appearances). Hope you feel better soon though. All the best.

I thought Safari NTLM auth was fixed in 3.1.1? 3.1.2 for Windows is out now though. I have a NTLM auth (using NTLM authentication option) problem when trying to authenticate against our School Guardian. It doesn't seem to work. Keeps requesting username and passwd. I changed the authentication type over to NTLM ident which seems to work OK.

Yeah the time zone is europe/London. I also added the server into the ntp.conf file and i don't think that made a difference either. But that was on last nights config so i can't remember that far back.

Hi, One quick question. Whenever i restart the Ubuntu VM i find that when logging back in the clock is wrong again by 1 hour. I have changed it from manual to sync with internet servers and it corrects the time but only until a restart is done then it reverts back to being forward by one hour. Obviously this is going to mess with my Kerberos. What should i do to prevent this from happening in the future? I have added my server to the list and checked the box and then clicked synchronize but it doesn't do anything. Thanks.

OK, the first thing you need to do is create the image for the OS X partition. If you can try to create a smaller partition for XP than 50% using the boot camp utility. The reason for this is that i found that if you choose equal in Boot camp utility and then tell the Net-Restore the same (50%) in the dual-deployment configs, there is a discrepancy where the Net-Restore will fail as the XP image is too big to fit on the Partition. It seems that that the Boot camp util uses a larger size than the Net-Restore partitioning system which results in the partition being too small for XP. I hope you get what i mean. So when you have created the OS X image you need to create the net-install set. When this is done you need to copy the image up onto the share where you will deploy the image from. Mine is called "Images" Next copy the .nbi (Net-Install set) up ton the NetBoot share so you can boot from it on the clients. Now you will need to copy the file attached int he zip called fixes into this share as well. Here is where we will run the script from. We will now need to create an image of the XP partition. Put it in the "Images" share as well. I didn't think there would be any need to create a .nbi set for the XP as i want it to deploy with the OS X side. We now need to configure the Net-Restore to make a dual deployment. So go into the configurations and make one to deploy our Image from the server we just created. Enter the name of the image. Enter the location of the share, in our case afp://servername/Images Enter the name and password to connect to the share Create a preference for the XP image as well. We need to point the dual-deployment config to this preference. When this is done we need to configure the preferences to create a dual-deployment of our OS X and XP image. Choose our OS X preference we just created and click dual deployment. Slide the slider to 50% and then choose the XP Image preference we made. Now we have our configuration made. We need to open our OS X Net-Install set and copy our XP_fix.app (do this only if your deployment share is also called "Images" if not edit the .scpt file to correspond to your server share) into the utilities folder in the Net-Install set. We should now be ready to go. Configure net boot to use the OS X Net-Install set as the default. Start up a client while holding don the N key. This should boot into Net-Restore and start the partition going. Once the OS X image starts to deploy open a terminal command from the menu system at the top (utilities i think its in or tools). Run the script we made from the location. /volumes/Net-Restore/utilities/XP_fix.app (i think thats the command. Damn me for not writing it down!!) This should then copy the file onto the WINDOWS partition. Close terminal and then when the XP image starts it should find the file and then continue with the restore. IF you get another error about Expect post-actions it usually points to the fact that the partition is too small for the image size as mentioned earlier. Hope this helps. OS X Deployment.zip

How do you install the MIT Kerberos. Is this the same as the krb5.config install?

Cheers for posting your config files. I had a look at the links localz posted up and decided to give those a try. And i was successful in managing to get the server to join the server 2003 domain. The only thing is though is i am not sure how much on Ric_ guide was required by the PyKota system. I also did not get the required output from the nsswitch test. I haven't got access to them right at this moment so can't post what i tried. I did this last night while watching Germany lose miserably.

I used the simple script (created by the guy in the link) that would copy the file needed from the source image onto the target drive. This then allowed for the image to get the file needed from the target drive and then write the image to the target drive. It seems it only needs it to extract the MBR before it starts the re-imaging process. What i did was put the script into the image in the utilities folder and then when the image automatically creates the partitions and starts the OS X image i open a terminal window and then run the script. When Net-Restore then gets to the Windows Deployment it finds the file and starts that image. It's not automated but i have found that i only had to do it the one time. The others have been fine. Hope this helps. I have also added an additional note to the sticky on OS X deployment that mentions about partition sizes.

I have now managed to deploy an image for both OS X and XP. What is the issue you are experiencing? Is it the same as above or something else?

Heck i ain't saying nothing. I have the first one and love it. I will too be getting the new one and the missus is having the old one. I don't know how the bluetooth works on the iphne though as i have never tried to connect to anything. Hmm, maybe i should. But i did hear that it can't connect to many devices.

Should be a quick booting machine with the raptor in :-) I looked for the front row hack but it seems as the site is no longer there. I found this site though: Eric & Jaime’s Blog Apple Front Row Hack Surfaces It also has a link to an app called romeo which allows control of front row and others using a bluetooth phone. It also has mirrors of the front row download. What version though i'm not sure as it needed to be updated with each revision apple made.

If you are going to practice RIS then you will be better off using vmware Fusion as Parallels can't boot from a network device if you are doing complete VM environment that is. Unless someone knows that that is not the case and Parallels can do it to. The iMacs can have up to 4GB RAM. Not as much as the Mac Pro but still a fair bit. You just need to bare in mind the noise of the Mac Pro. I have not heard one running but i have heard a G5 dual processor and when its quiet its fine but when the fans kicked in you needed to leave the room. But i do still love my G5. The only down-side to it is that it isn't an Intel processor. There was a site somewhere that hacked the Front Row installation but its been a while since i checked on their progress.

I have since resolved (i think) this error. I had removed the section for the default realm. I have now put this back in but am still struggling with the general configuration of the kerberos setup. I had configured the smb.conf, nsswitch.conf, and krb5.conf file as best i can work out and when i try to run the command net ads join -U administrator i get the error: utils/net_ads.c:ads_startup(289) ads_connect: Invalid credentials If i change the configs i usually end up with: preauthentication failed. I'm not entirely sure which is the better of the 2. And my network device keeps getting a no entry sign on it saying no network devices found but yet it still resolves and pings addresses... I looked up the error and on the Ubuntu forum a guy said he had the problem mentioned in this post and was down to DNS issues although i could resolve the server name fine. Just for information this edit.

I worked in a school with promethean boards in. I found them to be a pain to support. One guy had a laptop and his board was connected via USB and for some reason some often than not the board would not respond to any input. He had re disconnect and then reconnect the USB to re-establish connection. It seemed to be after his laptop went into standby /screensaver mode after sitting idle for a while. Never really managed to sort it out completely before i left. There were also numerous support issues and i never liked the installation of the software. I use smartboards now and although i have not used the software on the Smarts that much i think they are more refined than the promethean software. We use our Smarts with a range of projectors but when the new school is built we will most likely be getting the Hitachi short-throw projectors. A-100 i think they are. Smart software also works great on OS X and is deployable through ARD as well. Makes it real easy to install :-)

He's the educational sales guy. Out of interest though. How come you chose the Mac Pro? If you wanted the front row and remote why not go for the 24" iMac with top end graphics card. Not actually checked what th etop-end graphics card is though. Hope the link helps though.

Hello, I have been going through the installation guide for setting up a Linux box running as a print server with Pykota installed. As complete Linux Noob it is somewhat a little difficult. I have got to the point where i need to join it to the AD. I run the command net ads join -U administrator and the output is less than satisfying but i am not sure why it failed.The output was this: Any ideas as to why? I literally copied and pasted the smb.conf from the guide into the smb.conf file on my debian 4r3 install. I changed the netbios name to point to my AD server (wasn't sure if this was right) and l also changed the realm name CRONEHILLS.SANDWELL.SCH.UK. I set the workgroup to CRONEHILLS and i removed the WINS server line as i am not using one. I copied and pasted the krb5 into the one on the debian box too. I edited to read kdc = SERVER1.CRONEHILLS.SANDWELL.SCH.UK admin_server = SERVER1.CRONEHILLS.SANDWELL.SCH.UK So from what i can see the realm is in correctly.

i have downloaded Ubuntu and tried to get it to join the AD domain. I have downloaded 8.04 and all the updates but it seems to have failed to join. I downloaded likewise-open using apt-get to join to the AD domain. It downloaded and seemed to install OK but it gave me an error when joining. It said that it could not stop the daemon. I manually stopped and started the daemon and then logged out and back in to check if i could log in as a network user. I could not. The thing is i don't know how to rectify the issue and don't really know where to start.
