Ours are APC. The software we use on the servers is PowerChute Network Shutdown 3, and when you configure it (on the server, not on the NMC web interface) you get a screen like this: (click to zoom) When you pick an option that uses more than 1 UPS, you get multiple boxes on the next screen to fill in with IP addresses of each NMC. The problem if you wanted everything to shut down based on the temp sensor is that you would have to set every server up to monitor that UPS. While this is perfectly possible, it would mean they would also receive and act on low power events from that UPS even if they weren't plugged into it.

Have you checked for an old lock file anyway? It's possible the lock file is there but has wrong information in it.

I have each power supply plugged into a different UPS. I used to have one in the mains and one in the a UPS, but then you are bypassing the mains surge protection that the UPS provides. All of ours in the server room have Network Management Cards installed, and APC provides software for these which means each server can monitor both UPS feeds individually and make shutdown decisions accordingly, e.g. only shut down if both batteries are low, rather than if it's just one of them. Load testing is certainly important, but in practice is quite difficult to do as people get upset if you test in school time and it goes wrong! Fortunately (or unfortunately) we had a half-day site-wide power outage last year which gave me an impromptu live test without anyone getting upset if it failed (since all the client workstations were off anyway).

Correct, there appears to be no mechanism for obtaining DRM-free copies of downloads. On the first point though, technically the ERA licence has actually not changed at all - it's the relaxation of the T&Cs of iPlayer and 4oD that means the existing ERA licence now applies. Previously, the specific T&Cs barred the ERA from being valid. I believe ERA were involved in the discussions that brought about this change, but the ERA licence itself has not been altered.

According to a recently updated page on the ERA website, the BBC and Channel 4 have recently updated their online terms & conditions to specifically allow use by organisations with a ERA licence (this was previously not the case): Basically, it is now legal to download and store recordings from iPlayer or 4oD. Previously it was only legal to view live iPlayer streams (remember, we weren't even supposed to use the official download applications as they are normally for personal use only). Now we can, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to allow for removal of DRM from the downloads, so there will still be strict limits on how long you can keep the downloads. I do wonder whether the wording allows for recording using software other than the official apps, however.

Still nothing for me, but the ICT Co-ordinator got one in the post on Friday, and she didn't even register this year.

Had this error this morning and wanted to document it in case anyone runs into a similar problem in future. Installed 7.9 from scratch today, all working except for the following error when using the Extended version of My Files: Message from webpage Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Code: 2108 Category: InitializeError Message: 2108 An error has occured Everything worked fine after that if you just clicked OK, but it would pop up again whenever you changed folder. A few posts online suggested this was something to do with a Silverlight splash screen not loading. On inspecting the source of MyComputerSL.aspx, I found it was looking for a splash screen file called MyComputerSLSplash.xaml This file is missing from the 7.9 download on the HAP website. I copied the same file from the 7.8 download and the problem was resolved. (Message to future people: if you are having this problem and the file is not missing, try requesting it directly in the browser and see if you get an error of some kind.)

Have just installed 7.9 and this is still happening.

We have Lovefilm at home and last night I signed up to the free trial of Netflix to take a look. The big difference between the two is that Netflix (in the UK at least) is streaming only. However, it is all-in, so 5.99/month gets you access to the entire Netflix library with no extra charges. The downside is that the selection is poor, especially compared to the US Netflix. That said, the selection available for streaming on Lovefilm is just as bad. Hopefully it will improve, because if it doesn't I'll be cancelling my account at the end of the trial.

On the other hand, they would have to delete it AND then empty/delete it from the Trash. Anything deleted in Docs always goes to the Trash first - AFAIK there is no 'delete immediately'.

In theory it should be no different from laptops taken home by staff, but it will depend on the individual licence. Some 'site licences' are specific about a single physical site, while others are actually more of an 'organisation licence'.

TCO for adding a non-Windows server in an all-Windows environment goes well beyond the initial 'learning how it works' phase. When you have experience of Solaris/BSD/Samba and all the rest its very easy to recommend, but when you have no experience of any of those things, introducing them for the sake of a single server is not nearly as straightforward or cheap as you seem to be implying. Time is money and not everyone has the time to commit to training and additional maintenance burden. There may also be limitations on supported OS environments dictated by other things like the hypervisor you've standardised on - for example, Hyper-V (rightly or wrongly) only officially supports a very small number of Linux distros. All of these things must be considered when deciding what the 'best' system for your environment is. You cant just look at the technology in isolation and say "that one".

Worth noting that Windows Server 8 will have dedup as an installable role on the 'normal' editions - Storage Server as a separate edition will cease to exist.

What are the printer models involved?

I have opted out of the Go Green every year and I never get mine through the post. The teacher I registered at the same time had theirs come a few weeks ago, so I think the registration system is just very unreliable.

Check very carefully before paying out for that. If they mean the RM SmartCache then it doesn't do URL or header rewriting (unless they have added this feature in the last 2 months, which I doubt). Until very recently we had one here.

It could be that her roaming profile on the server is corrupt. Try (re)moving the roaming copy from the server and allow the workstation to recreate it.

I'd be interested in knowing if this was possible too. At the moment I just turn off GPS completely on my phone unless I'm actually using it.

It sounds like you are using one of the the NTLM (via redirect) methods for authentication. I made the same mistake when I first got ours; you probably want one of the options further up the list: "NTLM authentication" or "NTLM identification".

The SmartCache 2 does not support either of the required methods for this, and given the stagnant development of the product, I suspect it never will.

Up to Year 4 they are used extensively in most classrooms. From Year 5 up they are almost always simply projection surfaces, with the notable exception of Geography, because our Geography teacher is an ICT legend. All classrooms have dry-wipe boards for use, so no-one is forced to use the interactive boards.
