  1. Dear all, I'd appreciate your thoughts on how you're dealing with shared IT equipment come September. We still have a few IT suites that students rotate in and out of and clearly this is not ideal. ptions we're considering are: Removing all shared devices from use, including desktops and loan laptops/tablets Requiring students or teachers to clean keyboards after use
  2. Here are a couple of posts you might find useful: How to turn off chat for students in Microsoft Teams How to search student chat conversations in Teams
  3. Get the teacher to schedule the video lesson and set the students as an attendee, following these instructions: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/roles-in-a-teams-meeting-c16fa7d0-1666-4dde-8686-0a0bfe16e019?ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us
  4. Thanks for this. So, there is a free education version? Do you know how you sign up for this as I can only find a paid for education version on the website.
  5. Hello, I'm in the process of reviewing the use of Zoom for our school. Multiple teachers are desperate to use it because it's "free" despite already having access to Microsoft Teams. As an video conferencing app, it's really nice, however, schools can't manage the free version in any meaningful way. As this post outlines, can anyone explain why using the free version of Zoom for teaching primary and secondary age students is any different to just allowing teachings to use Facetime or Facebook Messenger to communicate with students. From what I can see, even if the teacher sets up an account against their school email address, they can just go in later an change it to something else. Does anyone else have any safeguarding concerns with Zoom. It seems to me that if you pay for it, it works really well and is manageable, but the free version looks exceptionally conspicuous. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

    Using

Apologies for the title. We're using Exchange for our email but using Google Apps accounts for Google Drive. We have one domain name for our Exchange system (school.county.sch.uk) and one for our Google Apps accounts (school.com). We're migrating our Exchange to Gmail over the summer and want our users to continue to login with their current Google Apps address, which is far easier to remember, but when they send from GMail we want the senders address to show as their official school email address (school.county.sch.uk). Google has said that this has to be done on a per user basis and cannot be done domain wide. They did say there were tools in the Google Apps Marketplace that might be able to do this although would not provide specific details as they cannot provide support for them. They also said this could be coded using the Google Apps API, but I'd need to pay someone to do that. Has anyone has this issue or found a way around it? Does anyone know an app from the Marketplace that will do what I'm looking for? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
  7. Thanks guys. Was there any thought about how you would transfer to another system if you needed to? For example, if we move to Gmail is there an easy way to get our data out later on and move to Office 365?
  8. Our head of ICT is heavily pushing for us to migrate from Exchange to GMail. I'm very much in favour of migrating to a cloud based system, but a lot of schools seem to be opting for Office 365 rather than Gmail. Is there anyone here who has done a migration from Exchange to GMail for 2000 users? How did it go, and why did you choose Google over Microsoft? Thanks
  9. Thanks. Do you have any pricing?
  10. I wonder if someone can give me some advice. We have multiple sites, some of which are not connected to our main LAN. We also have some staff working from home using a mixture of Mac OSX and Windows. Can anyone recommend software that will allow us to remote control computers in this situation for support? My ideal solution would be something like LogMeIn, but that starts to get expensive very quickly. We have a team of technicians so it needs to be something that is centrally managable, ideally browser based -- although this is not essential -- and requires minimal input from the user's end. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hi Novastorm, You need to use Apple's VPP program ideally to bulk purchase apps. There are ways around it but legally you're supposed to buy one app per iPad. There's a load of information here on managing iPads. Here's the bit about iPad app purchasing. Hope this helps.
  12. It's worth checking out ClassThink, it has loads of advice about managing iPads with Apple Configurator and Meraki: You searched for meraki - ClassThink.com
  13. Hi all, I have a RAID 1 array with two disks. Both disks are SAS. My question is, if one of the disks fails can I replace it with an identically spec'd SATAu disk? The server is a Dell Poweredge 2950. Thanks
  14. In my experience iPads are a data protection minefield in secondary education, especially when sharing them between students. I'd check out this site which has loads of useful information for managing iPads: Deploying iPads in Education - ClassThink.com Also, check out the iPad category which has further information: iPad Archives - ClassThink.com
  15. Is there any possible negotiation on pay? I'd be very interested, but the salary range is too low.
  16. Thanks. Yes, that's what I'm trying to do. I've opened 443 to the upstream proxy but it's not working. I have LAN 443 > * as a test. Basically I just want to allow my desktop to access the HTTPS upstream proxy.
  17. Hi guys, I'm a little stuck. I have a pfSense server with Squid 3 installed. I think I've correctly configured it as HTTP proxy is working fine. My problem is that I cannot get HTTPS traffic to pass through at all. We have our LEA proxy (also running Squid) which we are using as an upstream proxy (configured in the remote cache section of the proxy settings). I'm not using transparent proxy and manually entering the proxy settings on the PC. I've checked firewall rules and I'm allowing 80 and 443. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  18. I'd be very interested in seeing your demo. And also your lunch.
  19. I think I have identified the problem. It appears our timetabler has been exporting a copy of the 2005 timetable from NOVA to SIMS. SIMS haven't explicitly said that this is the problem but it seems pretty likely and they are looking into it further. And, in an amazing strike of karma the timetabler is my line manager who has been perstering me to get this fixed!
  20. It's happened for the last two weeks.
  21. Just to narrow it down, is your school using Keep Kids Safe? It's slowly becoming apparent that it may be a NOVA - SIMS issue. All of our lessons are showing but in places such as Report Card only AM/PM are showing for students instead of all lessons. Also, in NOVA 4 the timetable was set to a 2005 copy called PRESQL which we have never seen before. The only way I can see this happening is if someone was manually copying a blank timetable across from NOVA to SQL. SIMS can't shed any light on this and it's getting to the point where there have been too many changes to do a restore. Anyone have any other information?
  22. We successfully ran the September update (which may or may not be related to the problem) last Thursday. Everything appeared to be fine. The following day almost at 12pm on the dot all of the attendance marks for lessons disappeared from the system. AM and PM marks were fine. After logging a call with SIMS the only solution that they could come up with was to restore from backup. This worked and everything was back to normal. Come Friday again, however, and 12pm on the dot we have exactly the same issue. All the marks (apart from AM and PM) have been deleted. I've checked with members of staff who could be accidentally causing this and have drawn a blank. A call to SIMS is still being followed up. The only thing I have identified (and I want to make clear that I have no evidence that this is the cause of the problem) is that we have the Keep Kids Safe software running on the server which is the only thing which specifically looks at the attendance marks. After checking logs etc. I have again drawn a blank. Has anyone had a similar problem, or can anyone suggest what may be causing this? Thanks in advance for any help!
