rofl, I totally agree, I actually only have one desktop so the spinny cube doesn't really work very well, partner uses up to four desktops as once though, keeping different desktops for different kinds of work, so I could see why it might be more useful in that sense. Jo

It's system2free but I edited it slightly as it was looking for windows partitions, which I have none of, and some of the text didn't fit. I can send you the modded one if you like. Oh they do two themes one for single and one for dual core. Jo

Karoshi 5.1.3 has now been released, features and changes are below. www.karoshi.org.uk For those who don't know the current up-to-date features are: The changes are: Remastered on the latest version of PCLinuxOS (2007) Cronjobs now stored in /opt/karoshi/cronjobs/jobs with file extension .cron . Script provided to merge all files.cron in jobs folder to /opt/karoshi/cronjobs/masterschedule.cron. An icon to karoshi cron controls has been added into the karoshi system management area. Copyfilestoall added. This allows you to copy files to a group of users. Please use with care. Tidystudentfiles added. This is a provision that allows you to delete named files from all student accounts. This can be scheduled to run every day. Clamwin support provided for windows clients with data files updated on PDC via a daily cronjob. SSlbridge web file access added to allow users to get access to their files via a web browser through an ssl connection. Joomla upgraded to 1.0.12 Websitebaker updated to 2.6.5 Egroupware upgraded to 1.2.106-2 Squirrelmail upgraded to 1.4.9a Moodle upgraded to 1.7.2 Main control panels changed to use ruby so that all features can be seen at a glance. Desktop independance gained by changing from konsole to xterm and adding a distro variable for the filemanager. Network Configure scripts changed to check to see if default DNS server is up. If not the DNS defaults to either the server's own IP or the PDC's ip. karoshi user - home path changed to /opt/karoshi/karoshi_user By default all new users created apart from officestaff and itadmin do not belong to any supplementary groups. This mainly affects the temparea. Network backups in the new version has changes so that: Backups are kept in current, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather folders to simplify rotation. The script backs up a server in one go without having to schedule loads of different scripts like before. This should give higher capacity since all of the archives are being created back to back. No need to change backup script at the start of a new academic year as the script does it automatically. The start of the academic year and the total duration of schooling in years is set at initial setup. It automatically detects if it is a user area that is being backed up and if so creates individual compressed backup archives for each user in that group. Two log files are kept, one contains times of all backups including individual times for each user archive created and if it was a full or incremental backup. The other file is an error file for any tar or network errors that might occur. The log files are automatically rotated if they get too big. Quota support added. This can be applied to either individual users or groups of users. Quotas are assigned on a per server basis. Linux Client startup scripts modified. Printer setup, software install, system config is now in a separate file rather than one big file. These scripts are updated from the PDC at client startup. LTSP servers DNS setting changed to default to 172.30.0.2 instead of 172.30.0.1. If DNS is not available on 172.30.0.1 to LTSP servers then LTSP clients do not function correctly (clients get a grey box when they boot up). Hal - Setup internet fixed so that console box does not appear unless squid is already running, and it also closes correcty without manual intervention. Trailing newline fixed in httpd.conf. This caused apache to stop running if remote management was setup. Karoshi extraction from cd improved to stop problems when overwriting an extisting setup. This would fail if a folder on the older version had become a file of the same name in the newer version. Bulk user creation - now offers two formats for usernames the karoshi default first-initial surname yearofentry and surname first-initial yearofentry eg jjones06 jonesj06 Xen edit DHCP changed to edit /opt/karoshi/serversetup/distro/$DISTROCHOICE/xen/configfiles/dhcpd.conf. This ensures that any extras added via the ltsp controls are not lost.

@joedetic Yeah but the 'main stream distros' are not aimed at the UK education market, created by ICT Teachers, Network Managers and Technicians from UK schools with the features, server installations that we have done. Download and let us know if we are missing something or have done something wrong and we will change it. Jo

@Joedetic, you haven't see Karoshi have you We designed this distro so that you didn't have to sit around for hours playing with configs, a full network server suite can be up and working (with a user and a computer joined to it) in about 20 minutes (for us) and about 40-1hr for people who have never touched Linux before, if you choose single server setup it can be done in 30 minutes! There are things out there designed just for schools. Jo

We don't have 100% Linux, we can't, but even if we could I am not sure that we would and I would definitely not remove Windows for Linux, if we had already paid for the licenses. On the other hand the school has decided that any new computers (we build ours by hand) we won't buy a Windows license for, so far we have 9 Linux servers, 1 Windows (SIMS but will soon be CMIS) and 2/3 Linux clients(fat) and looking at adding a few thin client suites soon for a 700 student school. I must admit I do 'promote' Linux to schools, it's not like I can't with my own open source project aimed at them! But my personal view is that there is no real excuse to have Windows Servers in education, but client wise schools should use whatever they need, be that Windows, Mac, Linux, Unix anything!! Jo

I've just had the standard coughs and colds, and stomach upsets that have gotten better over the years (well getting them less) but the last 2 weeks have been hell, I have had sore throat, ear infection in both ears, eye infection in both eyes, my right ear has still not healed and I am now partially deaf in it!! Worse 2 weeks......ever.......

Linux Format, plus the others when I get hold of a copy, sometimes I pick-up computer hardware magazines, have bought Micromart but only when Karoshi was in it I also read though computer weekly and all the others that arrive at work. Jo

Ok, that sucks!! hmmm, I could try, but it depends on the cost if one bulb is £300 and we can get a decent projector that is £500 it makes sense to buy a new one, but I will have a look around and see what the prices are. Luckly this was a bundle with our whiteboard and we don't have anymore HP's in the school. Jo

Hi, I have just been told by my suppliers that HP no longer produce projectors or replacement bulbs for previously sold projectors, has anyone heard this? Not looking forward to saying we need to buy a brand new projector!! Jo

Forgot to say the clients are joined to the domain, and use winbind and pammount to get the users home areas. Jo

rofl! We have 2/3 linux clients, all of them are fat clients, and we are thinking of putting in thin clients soon. Ours are running pclinuxos, this has a KDE desktop, it took me a good couple of months to get totally locked down to my specification. This is now kept on the server and is 'dragged down' when the clients boot up. Jo

ok, I thought everything was working all students on server tested on a machine connected all find, rolled out software all fine, but I thought I would test it to make sure it works and it doesn't If I run the DPS software it reboots the machine, I thought this was because it was pointing to a exe with the word restart in so I went into the C:\ drive and tried to run the only other exe that is in there tdsloader.exe and that also reboots the machine. Help!! I have checked the RM forums and can't find anything on there either. Clients are running Win2000 with SP4. Stupidly my test client (that worked) was running XP, so would this be the problem?! It says on the spec that 2k would work Thanks, Jo
