I have searched and have failed, and have now wandered aimlessly into this windows forum for help Basically since upgrading our computers, the students have found it fun to play Call of Duty (or CoD)... first they where copying the main files to thier home areas, and just running the .exe off the stick, so I banned all files with .pk3 et al and this stopped them...for a while.... now they are just installing the game straight on the memory stick and running the .exe from there to play. Is there anyway of disabling the running of exe's on the memory sticks without stopping the actually sticks to be used for legit reasons? We are running Windows 2000 clients, and Linux Servers, so a regedit or something that can be done per computer would be more helpful, also if can let me know how to do it in some simple language with no ancroyms, as I'm a bit crap with Windows Cheers,

I use Ghost 4 Linux (see link in above post) it's really good and the guy who writes it is really friendly We also use it with our OS deployment in Karoshi. Jo

Oh, I agree, we use SEGFL here as well, and it often disappears for now reason, last time it was because they accidently pushed a back to defaults button on a switch. Saying that I am hoping that since getting KCN2 (10mb) all will be fine, no problems to report so far The only other problem I have though is getting ports open, its a nightmare!!

That's one thing I hate when using Windows, in Linux you can keep a 'window' to the front so that it never drops behind, it would make life easier for me when using 2k if it had this function!!

I have mine authing with samba, but problems at the moment include everyone can login not just staff, I know its an add-on problem, but if anyone knows a way for apache to pick up the samba groups that would be great. Jo

Or you can save all this hassle, (no learning curve though!) and download karoshi, and install colossus (internet server) only, as it's meant to be in a DMZ it will intergrate within a already complete network. I suggest Mandriva myself, though I would expect to get a ass kicking by the Linux purists Jo

KDE for me here, though I can work with anything, KDE I think is nicer for people moving away from Windows.

Karoshi is going to be one of the items meantioned in next months Linux Format....I can't wait

I think you should try downloading a bootable CD, something like Knoppix, or go the whole hog and download Mandrake/Mandriva, which is very newbie friendly...honestly some of the 'main' distros are getting so windows friendly, its scary!!

I use PHPNuke at the moment, and that is what is in the Karoshi setup, but am looking into Mambo, as phpnuke is not very teaching staff friendly, if you want to give them access to write their own bits as they need to know a little html IMG/BR/P etc etc

We host everything within the school, took a lot of arguing with SEGFL but they gave in finally!! Now we have Moodle as the VLE, website, online library, home access and email. Just convinced the department to let me upgrade the server as well....its going to be a beast!!

I only came here because someone meationed it on a edu/ict usenet group....and there was my project meationed in the first post....wow...lol 8)
