Hi, Found this thread whilst looking for ideas for Karoshi, does anyone else want to add any features etc they need/would like Windows Servers do out of the box. That way we can convert these over to our system so they are there for when users want to use it. Thanks, Jo

The only problem with LanView, from I have seen (please correct me if I am wrong) is that it will only work on a Windows Server, otherwise I would of used that!! Is lanview under the GPL?

Still haven't managed to get it to work, but was busy sorting out an open source day we are having on Monday, I will take another look this weekend, but you say that you don't want to run vnc.... hmmmm, how did the students access vnc after they got the password? When we had it installed on our 2K network, we got a regedit that hide the icon, so they couldn't get to it that way.

Never, laptops they can do what they want, but network pc's are locked down and all work is saved onto the servers. I couldn't think of a worse thing than the burser losing all their work.Sometimes even a knoppix cd can't rescue the contents of a harddrive!! Jo

Oh, mine tends to be pretty clean, maybe too tidy, people actually comment on it when they visit...lol! I have cupboards and shelves, apparently according to the students it use to be part of a classroom, that got converted, it does get messy with big orders or if my student techies make a mess! hmmm, just looked up from laptop and it looks like it needs a bit of a tidy Jo

I had the exact same problem as you when I needed Windows for an OU course, so I used VMware on Linux with a Windows Virtual PC. Which way are you looking at going? Linux with Windows or Windows with Linux? I have found that on Windows (2K anyway) VMware slows the PC down alot, so at work we had to manually turn it off and on when needed. On Linux I haven't had this problem and the service seems to sit in the background fine. You shouldn't have problems running VMware on you laptop though, we have run it on similar specs, the only thing you will have to look out for is how many applications you use, we found that on slower machines, we could have a couple native running, and the same virtual, anymore and the machine became un-useable. I would always go for the lasers, I love HP but bought there top of the range Business Inkjets and we have had nothing but trouble, and the cartridges run out all the tiime! I also agree with the fact that toners do 'dry up' and have had to replace quite a few because of this problem. If you are on a strict budget I would buy the inkjet and stomach the after cost. Otherwise buy a laser! Jo

Yep got two networks here, first one for our PC's so PDC Server(does multimedia as well), Firewall (ipcop) have 2 computers connected to that one, makes it easy changing distro as all our work is on the server!! The second network is a full rig of the karoshi project, so the same as I have at work. This is 5 computers acting as test servers, 3 laptops and our computers host 2 virtual clients or servers in vmware depending what we need. Same as above entire house is wired gigabyte(the only room without is the toilet but that still has a cable going though it..lol), also have wireless but hardly gets used. 2 networked laser printers, one colour one black and white. All in a rack cabinet we got given free...lol. We never need the radiator on in our second bedroom(computer room as we call it) as it is so warm thoughout the year!! Jo

I bought a new server, so click that, but technically as we built it and it was built from computer parts and not server parts, maybe I should of selected workstation. Our does 700 students and 50 staff, and its a 2.4ghz AMD, with 2 gb RAM. So nothing special and it does the job, its been going for 3 years now and we have never had a problem with it. This runs our proxy server, which includes, dansguardian, squid, asset/help centre and multimedia programs.

He is talking about the fact that so far in Karoshi, we hardcode the IP's we are slowly sorting this out, and replacing any IP's with variables, but we don't support schools who change from the default as it can cause all sorts of problems. Much easier for the school to have a firewall running NAT.

Eh, I voted Linux...really can't be bothered to put my point across as it's one of those things that will never get done, there will be no 100% Linux Users and there will not be 100% Windows users, so why argue whats the best? I have used Linux for 6 years, and it works...enough said.

£540 is a lot, though we build our own, they only come to £270 each, are 17" TFT's ar also only £80 each.

It depends which modules you take for example a project based module tends to be around the £600 mark, but a module with 4 tmas and 1 exam is about £350, a small 20 or 10 unit module only costs around £150. In total you have to do about 9 modules and a project I think. Jo

Doing OU degree Computer Science with honours...am also studing for LPI (Linxu Qual) taking longer than I thought about one module per year at about £150-600 per module join since I left school in 2002 so 5 years in...lol but worth it.

I did ICT 2000-2002 (a-level only) and never got taught binary, I 'self' learnt it after that but never got 'taught' it until I started my OU degree.

I would like to say thanks for letting me on the stand!! It was fantastic meeting everyone, and Art was 'teh best' in ut04 speak, always happy, friendly and pushed moodle in a positive way!! Jo
