woohoo I got it working.....one slight problem Does anyone know if the beeb own all of the 84.53.0.0 range I had to unban the whole range (84.53.0.0/8) for it to start working, so now I will need to thin the ips down a bit. Jo

Ok, this is what happens: 1. I click on the link on bbc news 2. It loads the page with the video box in the middle 3. The video box then has a spinning circle of blobs sits like that for about 5 seconds 4. Then the page which says 'More like this' appears and I can try and replay the video which then goes back to step 2. I just tried that IP in my firewall and it made no difference.

So how do people do it? Since the beeb has moved over to flash streaming our system has stopped playing the videos. Now I can get flash streaming from youtube and any other website but not the bbc. So far I have found this: It will work going straight out on the internet bypassing proxy and firewall. It will work going though the proxy but bypassing the firewall. It won't go out bypassing the proxy but using the firewall. It won't go though using the proxy and the firewall. So it must be a firewall problem. I have nmap'd the beeb (sorry pls don't come and get me:eek:)and all other things I could think of but it hasn't helped. I have done the following with the firewall: Let out just the IPs of the beeb servers that I have found - didn't work Let out the whole IP range (I know I know) - but it didn't work Opened the ports up that the iPlayer posted to need - didn't work Opened up all the ports I scanned - didn't work Everything is now back to closed, but I am really getting annoyed now, as alot of staff and students use the information on the site. KDE for me too, have found it very very easy to lockdown using kiosk(well I edited the KDE scripts, but its the same thing) and all our curriculum desktops run KDE here. Jo

When we do testing we always allow 8gb, it doesn't install that large but it a just in case thing. The other thing is make sure you do a custom vmware, as pclinuxos doesn't like to boot with scsi as default so you need it to say ide. On a real machine this doesn't make any difference and we have it installed on ide, scsi and sata with no problem, but its something weird vmware does. Jo

Just a quick post, to see if anyone thinks that I would notice or if it would be worth upgrading my 7900GTX for an 8800GTX, does anyone have a 8800? Or should I wait for a new card, or the prices to come down? The reason I am looking is because the 8800 is around £200 and thats my max price I would pay for a graphics card, but don't really want to spend it if there is no difference. Current setup is: 6000+ AMD X2 4GB DDR2 RAM Gig Network Nvidia 7900GTX 5mb (broadband) and my new baby - a 24" TFT Mainly play World of Warcraft(which I currently have on highest settings), but am waiting for the Linux Install for Unreal 2007 (aka 3) so will want to play that at max graphics too! We have 20 802.11n points to go out 5 have gone out so far just waiting on the electricians to put the rest out. The ones we have seem pretty good, we decided to do away with all our old ones (we only had about 3 before anyway) and have a school wide solution. Jo

Hi, Yes you may have to access the link from home as it uses a port number which is sometimes blocked by proxies and school ISPs.

After some work we have put the Karoshi demo up on the site, it will allow you to play with the Web Management system. Hopefully it will allow people to test the system and then contact us with ideas and problems. We do have an LTSP server but it is on a separate client dvd (because of all the packages installed.) We have it running at Dover Grammar School for Boys with Fat and Thin Clients and it works fine. We are going to release the the client dvd, but I have been off work for the last 5 weeks after an op, and that is were I edit/test the client system. XP integration is basically that you can join it to the domain (linuxgrid) and it already has preset profiles for users - ict admin, staff, yr2007, yr 2008 etc etc, it also has a feature that allows you to install software remotely on the windows clients too. urmm, there are more but I can't think of them off the top of my head so I might have to post again later! We have a BETA of Karoshi 5.2 out today(http://www.karoshi.org.uk), it has the new fantastic.....Web Management! This new system not only makes Karoshi easier to use, but allows you to manage your system across the Internet. Karoshi has also been fully updated with the latest software, and we have removed unneeded items and questions that were asked within the installation, hopefully making it quicker to install. As I said this is a BETA, the final release will have more functions and features added to the web management, Zimbra as an email/groupware option and it will be fully tested. Karoshi is an operating system designed for schools, it was originally created to replace RM systems with a Linux alternative. It has been designed not only for schools with techies, but those who are still being looked after by teachers too. Main aims at the moment are to keep the system interface simple to use but to widen the features available, to make sure that no scripts, consoles etc are needed to run the network(but not so locked down that people who want to play can't) and to improve the installation so that it is quicker and easier to install by non-Linux users. Even if your not interested in a move to Linux and/or Karoshi we would still be grateful if you test for us, all you need is one machine, doesn't have to have a net connection can be stand-alone for testing purposes, unless you want to join a Windows Client to it as well. Talking about locking it down, as it's running KDE, you can just use kiosk to lock it down, we do that here with our fat Linux clients and nobody has managed to break them yet. Jo

At the moment I have just been getting use to the eeepc, but my next job will be contenting it to our network. My only worry is the lack of software in the asus repositories. Maybe RM could setup their own repositories that would give access to greater educational software etc without having to use a third party one that could break the system. Jo
