hmmm, our building has nice views of the port and sea, with fields and trees in-between, so I wouldn't change the view, and the building itself is a copy of dover castle (also seen from the school) so I wouldn't change that either.... A bigger office would be nice, but that is staff/student/ict related so I think it would have to be parquet floors and more colours in classrooms, like sky blue, cheery colours. I suppose parquet floors who be horrible to clean but they would look smart. I would also change all of the horrible dark brown cupboards we have in ict to something nice...mine in my office are covered it stickers and cutouts at the moment so don't look particularly pretty! I must admit we got air con last year, it is alot better, the room is now the hottest in the winter but the coolest in the summer. Still haven't sorted out the server noises ...now that is a health and safety problem!!

I to think that if they should open source it, I wanted to put it into Karoshi but couldnt for a few reasons. Shame about his decision not too.

Probably a couple of days overall in the 3 years I have been here, one was during term time, and was a motherboard failure, server was back up and running within 40 minutes. The other times have been during holiday and planned, for example for server upgrades, which normally take a day for the whole set. (8 servers) The last one was last Saturday, when we had the earthquake, took out all the servers, came in and fixed them(well turned them back on and changed a plug that blew its fuse), so it was fine for Monday

I have been using Debian Etch on my laptop for ages, its quite good, but I have an urge to try Ubuntu (haven't so far, well ok I had it installed on a machine for a day but that doesn't count) to find out what the fuss is about. Jo

Hi, In a different forum someone said that the RMone was pretty secure except the dvd player, which is the same as the computers I use at work, the drives always get broken first!! But it got me thinking about maybe trying to get hold of the internal drives that don't have trays, like the Mac mini has. The thing is I have tried searching and they don't seem to exist! Does anyone use them? or know if they can be purchased? Thanks, Jo 8O

I give our old stuff to the students, means alot of them can then have a computer at home. Saying that I just can't seem to get rid of CRT monitors, I have loads of them, and will have many more when I upgrade some of the computers to TFT's!!

I agree with Geoff we have had a FAST visit (apparently someone had told them we didn't have enough licenses for our Linux boxes?! ) and they told me that as the Network Manager I was responsible for what is done, and I will go to jail! (they also tried to sell me £12,000 worth of auditing software...lol) So nothing gets put on the network we don't have a license for, nothing gets copied and nothing get installed. Mean? Not really, though to "lighten" the load I am in the process of gather free open source resources like clipart, sound and video files that staff and students can use in their work. Jo

Ah not that bad!! lol I agree with Midget though, you can't do LFS on a slow machine, you'll end up going mad, and start rocking...

Never really worked outside education, unless you count jobs I did when I was younger - under 16. But I would say one of the main reasons is to make a difference. For example the last three years I have been able to work with some highly talented students, introducing them to Linux, seeing them test different distros, learn how to code, and setting up weird and wonderful things, such as a beowulf cluster! There are lots of things I enjoy about the job, some things I don't, I think I might have to stay well at least until BSF kicks me out.

I agree with Geoff LFS is a really fun way of learning the in's and out's of Linux, just watch out when you get to the GUI bit, I choose KDE and it took ages to compile!
