One of the 6th formers did a beowulf for open evening and it worked well and impressed the parents ....lol

Because we run Linux, and refused to do the tests unless they make it compatible with our system, so they sent us a free server with red hat on it, but it says in the contract that we own it but it can only be used for the testing until it no longer needs to be used for the ks3 testing we can do what we want with it. Geoff do you use WoW in Linux? If so how do you get Xfire to work? I tried installing it but it would crash when selecting WoW... Using latest cedega and pclinuxos. Jo

Not me so cheating a little. A 6th form student (one of my very good and very trusted techies) decided to show us how great the HP pro curves we had just replaced with netgears....they costs loads so they are way better he said... watch this.... So he took the pro curve plug a cable into it from the network and said watch this: So he got one end of an network cable and pluged it in...no we said...its fine he said, its a procurve they are expense, they stop stuff like this....so he plugged the other end in... Phew we thought.......... until 30 seconds later the system monitoring went off, and another 30 seconds the phone was ringing none stop... So, lesson learned,...loop backs are bad, unless you have STP turned on! and it looks like even expenses ones dont have it on by default........ Jo ps. real loopbacks are a pain, esp when you have to search the whole school!!!

Thanks Paul, I have ordered a kvm (should of thought of that first!) so should be playing with it alot more when that arrives, as unpluging usb/dvi cables is not my idea of fun Jo

Thanks, Yes, my next option was to go though all of the commands used to join a Linux pc up, and see if they are the same. New it was built on BSD but wasn't sure how many changes they had made. As long as I can compile I will be happy!! Jo

Hi, Just bought a Mac Mini :twisted: (10.4 Tiger - Updated) so that we can say we can do Mac client support on Karoshi. But I have run into a slight problem I can't join it to a domain?! :x We can browse folders, etc but that is as far as we have got. I found the directory access in utilities, but we don't have AD(as its a Linux server) and our Samba is not using LDAP as a back end (yet), the samba option gives some stupid box that just says WINS server, which obviously isn't very helpful, and I don't want to use NIS. Does Mac have a simple just join the domain button? I must admit this is my second day, I have never touched a mac in my life....and I am finding it very very strange 8O ...so any pointers, at all, would be helpful... 8) Also I notice a bash command, does Mac allow you to run Linux software/commands? Cause if so we maybe able to use the Linux Client setup that we have to join Macs to the domain as well?!? Just a thought! :twisted: Back to searching the web!! Jo :?

The file you need is: /opt/karoshi/serversetup/variables/tcpip or for ltsp: /opt/karoshi/serversetup/variables/ltsp_tcpip Files are hard-coded, but the scripts for configuring the servers, redo all these ip' s from the files above. So as long as you either edit the file before you configure, or re-configure your server it will then work. As a project we don't support the use of other ip's (and any bugs/problems that comes with changing them) but I do know of at least 3 schools who have changed their ip's because of lack of firewall, and have karoshi working fine. Thanks everyone for trying the system out, IP's: We hardcoded (well in one file) the IP's just to make it easier for helping out and problem solving, if you have a firewall with NAT this should sort out any problems, as you can have your system on the 172. range whilst the county is on the 10 range. Also for home/work testing we have know setup a section where if you do need to connect to the Internet, you can 'add an internet connection' and type in your current details and it will act as if it has two network cards on two different networks. So you can have the servers on 172, but still access your internet on 192 etc etc budgester: We do have a single server setup now if this is any help, it allows you to have all of the servers running on one server, but I would suggest something beefy Virtualistation: We test ours on a mixture of real machines and VMware, glad it works on Paraells (sp?) Not sure of the other one, I had never even heard of it!! You could try though when booting the cd, choosing on the boot screen, 'more options' it takes you to the next screen and on there gives a list of different resolutions, these boot up in a kind of 'safe-mode'. At the moment we are just getting Thin Client finished, after that I am just adding the finishing touches to eGroupware, and then will be working on something called LAMS. If anyone has any features that we are missing out, let us know, we are always adding, and the holidays allow this to happen much quicker!! Thanks again!! Jo

I got the parts from dabs, but it varies, for example at one point I was buying 1gb memory sticks for about £27 each, and now they are about £40 each.

Too right, they have built about 200 for the school now and only had one broken cpu, which a few pins pushed back in place and it worked fine! Though looking at your tech room, it look a little cleaner than mine, especially after they have been building in there, no matter how many times I say put the rubbish in the empty computer boxes...

I have uploaded the checksum, but sourceforge uploads every 30 minutes. I also think we have narrowed down the source to Internet Explorer not liking the way sourceforge does it's downloading but I could be wrong.
