+1 for this question! I had the Promethean Nickel product demo this morning, and we're being offered them at less than the price of our usual iiYamas, so am very tempted to switch back.
-
I could never get mine to activate in VLSC, I always ended up going through VLSC support and getting them to give me license codes to activate the two products...... I might have been being impatient though!

[android app] Is there an issue with the Edugeek Android App?
DavR replied to fiza's topic in EduGeek.net Site Problems
Weird, I can reply from the app at the moment. Must be an intermittent thing. -
I've no experience of HAP+, but I think Foldr does what you're after. Not sure if you have to download an app to access the files or if it's in a browser though.

Looks like there's also support available to help schools setup Google Classroom or Office 365 - https://schoolleaders.thekeysupport.com/news/digital-education-platform-scheme/ We decided against going that route as we didn't have time to train anyone and have our own system in place, but might be useful for those that need it.

Mine seem to have been renewed as well now. Hopefully just a blip because of the current chaos, and not something that will happen every year.

Depends who they ultimately dump the bill on. Central government have announced the scheme, LA and MATs are delivering it, so it would seem very unfair for schools to be called to pay the bills. Unfair, but not out of the realms of imagination.....
-
This just in from the Adept support desk:
-
Depends, I guess. If the school are going to be expected to be involved with management and support, then sure, definitely. If the LA/MAT are just going to send them out without school staff input, then best we keep well away from the thing and treat them as privately owned devices. Always the way isn't it - you get top down dictats on things you'd like to have an input in, but when you do want government guidance, you get left with the problem to sort out yourself.
-
I wonder if they transferred management of this from LGfL to Adept, and ballsed it up somewhere along the way....
-
Interesting, ours expired on the 16th and I logged a support call with Adept (formerly Atomwide) this morning. I emailed LGfL first, but got a reply saying it's Adept who I need to speak to. Last time I needed a license change, I asked Adept who said call LGfL.....

I have done for our key servers, ie, stuff we can't run without. Other servers I have enough redundancy to let fail and I'll repair myself as and when. Laptops and desktops I try and get five year warranties from the start, but never extend. I might start dropping down to three years tbh, we have so few failures these days. The one exception was our Dell Latitude E5530 laptops, these had the famous hinge failure issues so extending the warranties on these was worth the money.

Reading this second article, it looks like schools might not get very much say on the scheme:

Setting Ricoh copiers to require code before printing
DavR replied to Jobos's topic in How do you do....it?
We have our copiers restricted using a custom driver through Printer Driver Packager NX, it wasn't a big problem. Then you just change the settings on the copier to require user codes under User Authentication Management. The bigger problem for us is managing the codes, we've given each staff member their own code (seemed like a good idea at the time) so now every leaver/starter we have to update the user database on all four copiers using the distinctly shonky Device Manager NX software. A centralised solution like Papercut MF would be much better, sadly our copier people wanted big money to set it up, which defeated the purpose of the exercise for us (saving money). -
ActivInspire crashes if more than one user logged on
DavR replied to DavR's topic in Promethean Direct Support
Good to know, thanks! Most people have learnt to work round it, but a new release in May sounds ideal, might end up rolling that out over the summer. -
One of our assistant heads has been trying to get this to work for days, finally she tried it at 11pm last night when things were quieter, and it went through fine. Far from ideal I know, but, if you do desperately need to push this through that's one option.

ActivInspire crashes if more than one user logged on
DavR replied to DavR's topic in Promethean Direct Support
Thanks for that feedback, I was thinking of chasing this up with them directly myself. Seems like a pretty fundamental flaw to me, I thought it would merit a bit more response than "something we're hoping to solve", but there we go -
I couldn't come up with a satisfactory answer to this tbh, not one that we could afford. I've shelved this for a few years until we do server replacements. In that context I can hopefully offset the costs of something like Veeam in the savings in other contracts.
-
That's exactly the sort of price range we're after at least! I must admit we're not backing up our G Suite platform at the moment, but that's just juniors classwork.
-
Can you not get the VEN_ and DEV_ IDs from Device Manager, and google those? Or is Microsoft Basic Display masking those?

What's the oldest bit of kit you still have running?
DavR replied to PrimaryTech's topic in General Chat
I think here it's between some old HP L1506 monitors on boxes no-one needs to look at, and the UPS on my backup server which is 2005, so 15 years! It's had new batteries recently though, promise. -
Definitely claim your free G Suite for Education, you get unlimited storage and lots of management options. Ditto the device management license (top tip - buy before March 9th as the price is going to go up). Top tip - you can use the management console to pre-complete the domain part of your gsuite logins, so "@gsuite.school.sch.uk" or whatever already pops up at login, so the student just needs to remember username and password, not email. Our Year 5s cope just fine, our Year 3 and 4s are a little more reluctant - although that is in part their teachers!

Very helpful, thanks. I've had a bit of a play in our Office 365 environment, first and second stage recycle bins, version history, full OneDrive / Sharepoint area restore.... it's not bad for bundled with the product I suppose! I'm still uneasy about trusting a cloud-based product with all of our data, AND backups. I wonder if I could script a weekly archive of data with PowerShell, as a compromise.
-
Ah man, Active Backup looks like just the thing! Sadly, not looking at buying any storage products at the moment.
