A problem we come across occasionally is the little scroggs changing the domain name from SCHOOL to SCH00L in the drop down box. Looks exactly the same in the font MS uses so no-one susses it till I am called over!!!! .....and no, I can`t be bothered changing the domain name to something less spoofeable. (Is "spoofeable" a word???? It is now!!)

AHA.....Mr McCoy........You are the MAN!!!! Should have thought of this myself but DNS has always worked slickly for me so never bothered checking. On investigation there were all sorts of spurious entries in DNS lists. Zapped the wrong ones now so hopefully solved. Just wondering why DNS database has suddenly started to do this.

Cheers Tony, but the machines are logging on without problem.....it is just that when I check the management consol on the server to see who is logged on and where, it sometimes shows the old machine name rather than the new one. I suspect that there are two records against the SID for the workstation. In the past this would be cleared either immediately (usually) or after the workstation had been logged off and on a couple of times. This no longer seems to be happening. I wonder if one DC has the old name and another DC the new one so it depends which one happens to deal with the log-on. have checked (and forced) replication so this shouldn`t be the case but wondered if there was anyway to force updates of SID/name.

W2003 server, W2k and XP workstations. I recently renamed workstations in a couple of suites. Unfortunately the old names still appear intermittently in console on server which is annoying. I assume this is because the old name is still registered with the workstation SID on the server. Anyway to force this to update? I thought it should happen automagically though may take several log-ons.

It doesn`t understand the PLASC2006 file. You need to download a conversion utility from RM to convert back to 2005 format. It might then work!!!! :?

OK......still having problems, none of which were apparent before installing KS3 Test software. Can anyone think of any other reason for the following: 1. Permissions on pupils user areas being changed randomly. 2. Files/folders disappearing from various areas......including shared areas. 3. This seems to take place overnight or over the weekend so not a deliberate act by anyone on our network. 4. Nothing untoward in server logs. 5. I`m aware that the ICT test software carries out various "housekeeping" tasks overnight........DB Vacuum makes me worried!!!! If no-one can think of any other explanation for this I think it`s time to remove this software from our system!!!!

Server room has no window and I`ve been hard at it all morning. Went over to main school block 20 minutes ago.........loads of the white stuff and school like the Marie Celeste........kids and staff sent home earlier..........nobody thought to tell me!!!!!

but how do they access this if they can`t log-on???

We have also had strange goings-on this week.......permissions changing on some files etc. Only thing I can think is it`s something to do with KS3 IT test..........it`s the only change carried out recently!!! Maybe an attempt by RM to boggle vanilla windows networks

Not sure, but can you not "take ownership" of the file and then alter permissions?

Anything in a log-on/off script that could effect this?? Eg a md "n:\My Documents" without the IF NOT EXIST ?

Remember: If you have to change the IP address range you must include localhost in the new list!!!! Took me ages before I realised I`d not done so which was why I couldn`t log on to the APS anymore. Apart from my stupidity though, it seems to work quite well but I have to admit it hasn`t been stressed yet.........lets see what happens when a whole room full of kids tries to mis-use it at the same time. BTW Do you have to have a pilots licence to use the FlightDeck?? Can I persuade SMT that they should purchase a good FlightSim for training purposes? Is it time for my medication already?

Washed the coffee cups.........apart from 3 which I`ve passed onto the Biology teacher.........some interesting growths (the origins of life???) Could this be the answer to the question that humans have struggled with? God was a school tekie who was too busy to wash his cups???!!!! Also re-imaged 20 machines in IT room and run latest SIMS upgrade, imported reports etc. It`s amazing how much you can get done when no teachers about. Even had time for a ciggie on the steps with the librarian!!! Now for the KS3 test software.........gulp <

In all next week.......two major jobs: 1. Sort KS3 ICT test software. 2. Wash the dirty coffee cups lying around the cupboard (AKA server room). Can see 15 from here but probably several hidden away. Discovered why the rack door didn`t close properly yesterday.........I`d wondered where that donut had gone!!!

If schools want to try it out why not just install on own server and run internally. This would give them the chance to assess it. Latest instal is a doddle!!!
