It does not just begin with this stuff. Think of Tesco clubcards and Necta Cards and all the other fluff like that. They are there to give us rewards you might think.... Nah, they are there to record what you buy when you buy and how you buy. They can then direct more sales more advertising and more intrusion into your lives. You might think it's great in 10 years that when you walk into Tesco's with your 3d goggles on that you see loads of advice and products pop up on display guiding you where you might want to go. I would rather just be an individual and would like to keep my thoughts and habits to myself. Websites do a lot of that stuff well already. Directed advertising etc.. One of the reasons i like to block ads and other stuff. We will end up having to walk around with balaclavas on to maintain our privacy.... As i say, it is not just ID cards as this sort of spying is creeping into every walk of life.

If you pop to the dump to dispose of rubbish they will be probably be adding each visit on the system to a database and then will hit you later with some restriction on visits or demand you pay a commercial licence should you come back too many times. It is all about recording and restricting and then finally... charging us. Sensors to keep track of what you bin, charges to drive your car by the mile down the motorway, charges for breathing next. When the expenses scandals are cleared up these councillors are going to need some new revenue streams as they will feel exposed by public scrutiny about where money is going. Watch out for all these schemes popping up soon.

I've been upgraded - woohoo!

Soon as you download x amount you are throttled like some horror film so it's rubbish really. I download Linux images, Technet stuff, games from my Metaboli subscription and more and on the 2MB line i am using at the moment it only takes a couple of hundred MB before i am halved in speed at least. I suspect the 10mb will do exactly the same but perhaps let me download 500MB before it chokes the life out of me. Watching the initial speed is great but you know that the estimated download time will soon expand over the horizon as soon as the cap kicks in. As this is a temporary place of residence for me it's not the end of the world. As soon as i get sorted and settled though i will move to someone who does not cap or throttle, regardless of cost. I have heard BE are good. -
blocked it along with another thousand or so annoying little quizzes and games.

I think virtual PC is the way to go. I believe that RM have advertised it for this use in the past. I remember reading something about students learning programming and other such things on RM using virtual PC. Never tried it myself though.

Given no reason not to, perhaps people would shred them. But then again, when they force you to have one or not be able to use a car park or other services it's not so easy. Some of you might still say "well i catch the bus so i will ditch mine". What next when they say you have to use this card to catch a bus or buy a rail card? Choice does not always come into it. These people are just like you and me. Yet they sit there working out new ways to screw us (and themselves) out of our liberties. Always makes me wonder why you would screw up your own kids futures by ruining the country they will inherit. Perhaps they are so filthy rich on expenses that they are far removed from the concerns of mere mortals.

School worker's Facebook post prompts suspension
dalsoth replied to sidewinder's topic in General Chat
Here's a little thought.... perhaps think twice about adding everyone including your uncles cat to your facebook... You can choose who sees your content and you can choose who to add. Everyone i know just adds anyone they might have knew 10 years ago because they want to "keep up with what they are up to" and then never even bother to message them. Stupid comment to take action over though. I have and do say a hundred times worse a hundred times a day. -
I believe that as long as you are good enough and can impress with your application form and then the interview, you will be given the respect due. Like said previously, if you have the wrong approach you will not go far. Any company would be improved by appointing me. If i did not believe that i would pack it all in now.

I always use an external USB HDD to save the images on when using it at home with my own stuff. Not sure about saving it to the server as i have never tried. Have you not got another hard disk lying around you could pop into the machine to back the image on to? Perhaps use this to store standard images and transfer them to a server later? It will only take up the size of the image on the computer. If your HDD is 150GB maximum capacity and the space used by the OS and files is only 10GB on the disk, then the image will only be 10GB or less as it compresses it i believe. Others may be able to confirm the network backup details as i cant remember what options there were. If i remember right, you can not back up to the same drive and it does warn you about this. Probably because you would have to restore the disk over itself and thus wipe the backup should you try to restore it. Programs like Acronis usually create a hidden partition to prevent you from doing this but i don't think Clonezilla does that.

We don't need a vote we need a revolution!
-
You can convince yourself that an independent can make changes but I believe the reality is quite different. I would like to vote for someone who is part of a party that represents views that reflect my own. I would choose this over an independent who has similar views because the party can make changes whereas the independent can not. I am not talking about local issues as such but rather in the broader sense of change. If what you are saying is right then why do parties exist at all? I would rather stick to something that could happen such as opening up the election process rather than pie in the sky wishing my local indie MP will change the way the whole judicial system works. That just won't happen.
-
I can't see independent candidates making wholesale changes to the country which means they are a waste of a vote. You really need political parties working together to push real changes through. Hundreds and hundreds of independents will only drown out what needs to be done. I think we just need the big parties that run the country to stop trying to secure a legacy of family members in parliament and allow the real people that care to enter politics.
-
Don't vote for any of em until they open up elections to allow for anyone to run. Until then we will continue to be ruled by the aristocracy. People who have no idea what it is like to live in a rough housing estate and therefore continue to allow the courts to award victims with ridiculous sums and criminals with massive payouts. Why are teenagers and the youth of today getting arrested 50 times muggings or for car theft before they end up with a paltry 3 months inside? Rapists or drunk driver killers get off with 18 months? Watch teenage tearaways on Road Wars smash up the streets in stolen cars only to be let out later that night with a caution and you will understand that things are not right. Lets get real people in power who know why the country is going down the pan and perhaps we can change it. That means opening up the election process so that some toff with connections can't get his snotty daughter a job as an MP and all the "perks" that go with it. If you heard that MP bleating about how people were "jealous" of his very very large mansion the other day you will no doubt ask yourself how this guy fooled his constituency into electing him when he is so far removed from the working class people of this country. The truth is that normal people had no say in his choice as an MP for his party. Disgraceful really. This is meant to be a democracy.

RM Ones for me. Had a full room of them put in over a year ago and they are still all in perfect condition. Had a couple call outs for a dodgy screen and a motherboard but all covered in the 3 year warranty so no problem. All my other suites are being trashed every day. We go through 60 mice every month or two and 20 or so keyboards in the same time so you can imagine the damage we get to the computers. Having the keyboards and mice clamped down inside the back of the case makes it almost unheard of to have to replace something in this particular room. I have looked at a few other all in one style computers but nothing matches the RM Ones and the new improvements they have recently made. Will be buying another suite of them soon. The lack of maintenance more than pays for any additional cost over a standard machine.

If using Nlite, there is an option in there somewhere which disables the mini wizard after installation that will ask you to create a user and enter a name etc.. That might be what is causing the username bit you mentioned. For non RM machines i use Nlite with RyanVm's Windows Update packs and then this site for all or nearly all of the drivers on any computer or laptop. In your Winnt.sif file that Nlite creates you can edit it and include a line or two to make it automatically format and partition the first drive and proceed with the install. This saves you manually having to select a drive and format. Can't remember which line it is exactly but i use something like this below which is taken from the winnt.sif. I expect it is the Autopartition and the Repartition bits. Last time i messed with Nlite which was a while ago i still had to manually add this stuff or i would need to manually set up the drives. This should ensure that after you press a key to boot from cd, you can happily leave it and come back when its fully installed. [Data] Autopartition = 1 AutomaticUpdates="Yes" MsDosInitiated=0 UnattendedInstall="Yes" [unattended] Repartition = Yes UnattendMode=FullUnattended

How could you look bad if the faults were not reported? You can not personally run around and check every laptop trolley in every department and unplug each laptop for a close inspection every day. You could not do this with projectors or desktops either if you have quite a few on site. We rely on staff (sometimes students) to report problems and submit requests. No report or no request, then no action is taken. Now if i had a large staff to work with we would be able to do some of the proactive jobs that would prevent some of this stuff or at least would bring it to our attention before a problem is submitted but here we do not have that luxury. I have a laptop on my desk that an annoying member of staff brought over because she can't be bothered to book faults and thinks she will get higher priority in person. I asked her to submit the job anyway as there were other calls currently being dealt with. She has not bothered as usual and her laptop is still sitting on the desk a day later untouched. I should not be expected to remember dozens of problems and tasks in my head every day. No helpdesk equals no solution. I think you just need a bit of support from leadership or even just the green light to force staff to use the helpdesk before anything else except emergencies. SLA's also help to define acceptable time frames to solve issues. As does really doing it properly with ITIL or FITS as it is geared specifically to schools.

Usually wear a gorilla suit during the week. During holidays i can wear what i like really.

Used to use easycleaner the older version but after trying that and then windirstat moved to jdiskreport. Much better in my opinion as i just want a nice easy interface to see where staff are clogging my drives. JdiskReport

Little issues with new Joomla Package
dalsoth replied to dalsoth's topic in EduGeek Joomla 1.5 Package
Ah and while i am at it and just to be a greater pain.... I changed some of the images on the greybox gallery to my own ones. Now when i click an image it loads without the greybox. Is there a specific way of replacing images using this? I worked out the slideshow thing with the text docs for the main website slide show and that works fine now but could not see why the greybox images just appear as normal pictures now from trying to change them. I believe i replaced the images using ftp with the exact same names to test. I then realised that replacing the images was not enough as they still had stuff like "water Lillies" on their labels and stuff. I then went in and edited them on the website manually and changed the text for those and found they no longer worked as they should. Any tips? -

Little issues with new Joomla Package

Thanks for the quick reply, i have gone into the menu page for that particular item. I opened it up and can see no option there for making the side user menu appear as it does on the other pages. I may be blind because i just cant for the life of me see any differences between the other pages and this one. I will attach some images to show you below. Perhaps i am being really dim here. It does sound like some global setting needs applying as new pages appear with no menu also but i can not locate the setting to do this. -

Thanks, i actually have to admit rather embarassingly that i did not scroll down and see the section where you can add things to front page or news page etc.. Mine were going into a black hole somewhere uncategorised. It is starting to make more sense now. Although i still don't know why on the demo site on Edugeek and on my own site, the Foundation Stage link in the curriculum shows up with no left hand navigation menu and the others do. Is this a little bug? If i create a new page in that list it also has no menu. It looks more professional if the menu is there which is why it bugs me If anyone has noticed this or has an easy fix for something i am doing wrong please let me know. Cheers for the help and i don't mind the thanks. If anyone else feels like thanking my post i won't be offended:D
