This might be a really straightforward question but it's not something I've really looked into before so would appreciate some help. Basically, company we bought ID cards from in the past has closed to the 'rona. We can now print our own cards by borrowing an ID card printer from our academy trust, however, I don't know what type of RFID card to buy (e.g. Mifare 1k, mifare 4k, paxton etc.). Stupidly never got that info when I took over. Current badges get scanned using a USB reader which gives a 11 digit number, this goes into AD and gets pulled by the printers. We then convert do some conversion on that to get it to work with our door entry system and finally enrol the card on our entrysign system. Any ideas?

We moved from Eclipse (we never upgraded to CRC due to the reported issues) to Accessit and the entire process was really simple, they exported our library data and mapped it across to Accessit. Librarian is very happy with the software! https://accessitlibrary.com/ With Capita as well, we had major issues cancelling as they just would not reply to any emails asking about when our contract end date was, notice period etc. I got a response after about 4 months to find out it was a 30 day notice period, I'd check yourself or send them a letter with your cancellation request in the post as well.

Is your current system using ISDN lines or SIP? ISDN is being phased out by 2025 so you should be looking to migrate anyway if you're using it. I can't personally speak for 3CX but I have heard good things. Supported handsets are here: https://www.3cx.com/sip-phones/. The Yealink phones can be inexpensive and decent, ranges from £35-100+ per handset depending on functionality. Yealink T40G is about £45 ea.

Staff are firstname.surname Students are {Intake Year}{First 4 of Surname}{First Initial}{Iteration} e.g. 15SmitJ1. The number changes if there is a duplicate, so two john smiths, one would be 15smitj1, the other would be 15smitj2, if a student has a short surname then it just uses the full surname. To be honest, I don't like the username structure but it was long established at this school when I started and I haven't bothered to change it. I don't see a lot of duplicates and the confusion only happens for the first few weeks of Year 7 and then they remember it. At an old school we used admission numbers, this was easy for the students to remember (after the first few weeks of Year 7) but a pain if staff wanted to know who they were (if they couldn't see the display name).

I feel like the problem there is on your end. Personally I think Google Classroom is pretty spot on if you're a G Suite school. It has a lot of things that could be better from an administrative perspective, but it does the job and is easy for staff to upload documents etc.

As per this KB article, it says to monitor this blog post for any changes to the program but no update yet. Wouldn't hurt to email them to try to get clarification. We're in the same boat, but we'll be moving to Google Meet, currently up in the air what things will look like from September so we're making all the training available now so that staff can move across at their own pace. My recommendation is get your training material together for Google Meet/Teams and start to teach staff how to use it now with the expectation that from September you won't be using Zoom at all. Show your BM the pricing for Zoom education and you should be able to get them on-side to encourage staff to use the (free!) alternatives.

Curious how others do this, or if you know of any decent parts sellers! I've got an ASUS C202SA chromebook and the keyboard is presenting as faulty. Powers on when opening the lid, keyboard unresponsive on sign in and pressing the "T" key seems to instantly power it off, I suspect liquid damage. I've had a look online and can source the keyboard direct from China on eBay but it looks as though the keyboard is one of the lovely ones which has the loads of melted plastic rivets as per the photo below. Getting the existing keyboard off would be a simple case of brute force and ignorance, but securing a replacement on well is new to me. How do you do it, if at all? I've also had a look for the palmrest w/ keyboard but couldn't find a UK seller. Thank you!

I've replaced my plusnet router at home with a TP-Link Archer A7 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Archer-A7-Wireless-Combined-Supports/dp/B00416PTDW) and no longer have any wi-fi issues so can happily recommend that. Supports OpenWRT too if that's a plus for you, out of the box the TP-Link firmware supports "OneMesh" with their range extenders. Used to have a ton of wireless issues with the plusnet router and since replacing it, we have strong signal throughout and no random disconnects.

I had this when I replaced the broker certificate for the HTML5 client as well. I had to clear the cache/cookies on my machine, after doing that, it worked. Have you tried that?

I enable it for all classes at the beginning of the year, the way we have our GC setup, an administrative account is tied to each year group which is added to all classes synced from SIMS as a teacher. This allows us (IT Support) to easily see what the teacher is talking about in GC, without having to get them to add us to the class (or add ourselves via GAM). Once you have an account added to all classes, if you enable Guardian Summaries in one class, you get the option to enable it for all classes you teach. You could quickly add yourself to all classes via GAM, enable guardian summaries, remove yourself via GAM.

We have a subdomain for our students at my current school. Previous schools we didn't use a subdomain, but the students had a different format to staff so it was easy to differentiate. We also have students/staff in groups (all students, all staff) that makes it easy to target with powershell if needed

You'll want some basic knowledge on networking to fully understand what you're seeing in Wireshark, but on the actual tool usage then Ross Bagurdes has a pretty good set of tutorials on it on Pluralsight: https://www.pluralsight.com/courses/wireshark-introduction If you have a broadcast storm, you should be able to start a capture for a few seconds and if you see thousands of broadcasts a second, you're likely to have a broadcast storm. You can go to Statistics > Conversations and sort by packets and the highest is likely a good place to start. With a broadcast storm though, you're better off (imo) using managed switches and monitoring so that you can enable spanning tree, storm control etc. Monitoring will enable you to be alerted if a loop is detected

I create our first intake using Powershell, each school is different but you'll need to plan out what you do with a user and adjust the script accordingly. With the first intake, I import a CSV and then run a ForEach loop to create the user in each line. There is definitely more efficient ways to do this, but I wrote it how it appeared in my brain so... Script workflow Connect to Exchange, MS Online (MFA) Set up initial variables Start ForEach loop{ Import names from CSV, remove any superfluous spaces Create username (Ours are in a weird format so this does some checking to make sure it's unique, if not it increments the number at the end) Set password, additional variables Create AD User Add AD user to groups Set AD Attributes Create folder & apply permissions as necessary (Have to check the user had replicated to all DCs before doing this as otherwise it can error applying permissions. What .exe did you point the remoteapp to? Needs to be pointed at Pulsar.exe rather than SIMSLoad.exe from what I remember

Pretty sure all your SIMS data will get imported directly into Bromcom, including all the historical data, right? If that isn't the case, just keep your SIMS SQL Database and you have access to all the data (although not very useful without SQL queries etc.) You could also run some reports to get CSVs of the data, but I can't really see a use case where that'd be necessary compared to just using Bromcom.

I think the large majority of schools moved away from .sch.uk a long time ago, especially now web presence is very key for schools. The majority of schools around me are on .org or .org.uk for their domain. You're not required to use a .sch.uk as a school, and generally speaking, it makes your email addresses so long that you wish you had moved away from it!

Notepad++ for our ICT/CS Students. Photography have websites for their portfolios and they use Weebly for Education which is drag and drop, teacher managers logins for the students etc.

If you use SIMS, try EduLink One as the app for that is in sync with SIMS, has a messaging service, noticeboard etc. You'll find plenty of praise for it on this forum (https://www.overnetdata.com/edulinkone) We also sync our students timetables up to their Google Calendar (you can do this to O365 too) using Salamander (https://www.salamandersoft.co.uk/) so that might be worth looking into. If you're heavy O365 then you could start to utilise Teams for students perhaps, the app for that will show your calendar etc.

So out of curiosity, has anyone actually ever heard of ICSI or this certification before? From a bit of googling, the only things I can find are adverts for this being free and to me, it seems like the £500 tag is more as a "Oooh such a deal" than what it'd actually be worth, and seeing as the company doesn't look very big and substantial, will an employer care about this cert? You're probably better off doing a course on pluralsight for the CompTIA Security+if you just want to expand your knowledge, no?
