We use Profiles, it is not perfect for a whole host of reasons, but makes managing the whole affair reasonably easy. We are constantly flirting with the idea of using assessment manager marksheets, but then you lose the comment bank functionality (which very few use to be honest). A nice blend of the two would be good, data and comments on the same screen at the same time, a radical notion to a SIMS user. We have used a commercial external report writing system, but it really did not work for us in a big way, but your mileage may vary.

The kids can play, the servers can be reset once they have royally stuffed them up and the rest of the school can keep running as normal with a reasonable level of risk.

No FMS here. @jinnantonnixx, what is the advantage of log shipping over standard transaction log backup/restore? Not that I have a spare SQL server, but always useful to know.

I am setting up a backup strategy for our SIMS SQL2008 server. Am currently using the SIMS scripts to do it which is fine, but I want less data loss in the event of a failure so am putting in transaction log backups every hour (maybe 2). My question is this, which dbs do I need to backup to ensure a complete restoration is possible without loss of login usernames/passwords (this happened to us once when the server went belly up and was a nightmare). Currently setting maintenance tasks to backup the following: sims solus3_deployment_server (discover when I actually deploy it) Do I need to also back up all/any of the following? master model msdb tempdb

It is available now and you should be able to deploy it through SOLUS3.

You can use the pupil report tickbox in the contact for the student, you can design a report that filters based on this tick box. The filter would look like Students where > Contacts Exist > Where > Pupil Report is true We maintain a separate list external to SIMS at present. We have discussed using this several time over the years, but for some reason there are always those situations that don't fit into a nice neat tickbox so have remained using the external list. Maybe one day it will change.

Which technique are you using? 1. A single template sheet merging each subject onto a new copy each time? (Never used this technique so not sure what the problem would be) 2. Whole document template with individual pages for each subject. Have you got Report section tags around each page?

Inside your contentpaneopen tabletags you have an extra paragraph tag which just contains a non breaking space. Under this in the html: </pre><table class="contentpaneopen"> </ Is this line, which is causing the extra space. Just delete this from your template or content (I cannot tell which). Hope this helps.

When is SOLUS4 SP1 out?

2 & 1/2 days since I reported my SOLUS3 problems, still no call back. SOLUS2 upgrade yesterday took approx 5 minutes on the server and about half the clients upgraded automatically when SIMS was started this morning. The other half are having permissions issues (SIMSperm does not like to do what it ought) so we are re-installing via Impero (Now there is a GOOD piece of education software). We use SCCM for all of our other software, why SOLUS3, why!? On the plus side, I was just in Assessment Manager and they have finally added the replace results set feature in the templates. I actually ran around the office cheering. It has been quite a wait.

I second that, some of the groups are incompatible and each update changes the groups permissions in SIMS. So an incompatibility may well have been introduced.

Upgraded SOLUS3 to latest version 3.4.103 yesterday..................now it won't talk to its database. FFS! SOLUS2 it is again this time....................

@Matt40k Is your app available for configuring SOLUS 3? Just about to the upgrade to Autumn for the census and not used SOLUS 3 successfully yet!

Impero has been good for us, teachers love it (except it recording what they do at home on the school laptops), IT support find it very useful as does the management team for the audit trails. There are some niggles, but an awful lot less than any other remote control software we have used over the years. +1 for Impero.

It seems a valid statement to make. Just because all organisations have a corrupt few, does not mean that it should not be highlighted, investigated and prosecuted where necessary. Which is what the Catholic church failed to do, for their own selfish motives.

All our teachers, cover supervisors, TAs and assorted other based on need, have a laptop. All our registers are taken on the laptops, so they have to be brought in daily and problems are usual picked and fixed very quickly. The laptops are locked down, but we have a policy of allowing staff to request we put any legal software on their laptops. It is a compromise on the full freedom they (and we) would like and us not employing 20 technicians. We have a five year replacement program for all IT equipment and decisions had to be made about what we could afford to keep running. So desktops attached to projectors in the classroom were left to expire. We are just consulting on whether senior management/heads of year also require the desktop in their offices in addition to their laptops. And how much they are prepared to give me extra in the budget if they want to keep up that density of computing. Laptops are encrypted, so when they go home we have a measure of security for the data. Hadn't thought of it as a recruitment tool, must mention that to the senior team. All in all, staff having laptops has generally been seen as a success and a positive thing and they wouldn't go back (the question is raised every year). Has it improved outcomes for the students, the ultimate measure of a school initiative, I am not sure. All staff had laptops when we went into special measures, all staff had laptops when we became outstanding.

Just glad my LA did not approve my Census in time............always seem to wait a couple of months these days after being stung for too many years applying the new releases as soon as they become available.
