[sims] Automatically admit pupils from Admissions
bobsmith replied to tben2505's topic in MIS Systems
routines, admission, admit applications -
Yep, exporting the .slk files is the way to go, makes importing a doddle.

Welcome to joys of SIMS reporting... I made one that was pretty much what you are after, but I hadn't cracked getting out the maths sets in order. Create a report based on the focus "assessment" Put some sub reports in it to pull through the assessment aspects you need. WARNING this could get really really slow to run. If you can do without the photos you could just create them a marksheet with the KS2 and other info on?

2 main routes to this. 1. SIMS Learning Gateway - this is their sharepoint delivered web based portal for staff, students and parents. 2. Some remote access system to full SIMS, e.g. Windows Remote Desktop/App, teamviewer, logmein, many other solutions. SLG costs a pretty penny and if you hate sharepoint sites you'll hate SLG too. Remote desktop can cost around £5 per user per annum + any additional hardware you need to run the terminal server (you may have spare capacity already of course).

Been there and done that, twice!! Procurement processes in many many schools would leave most auditors in fits if they ever checked into them. As for the costs, it's all subscription based so you are going to be paying for it every year for ever. Hope your bursar can swallow the costs.

I've given ours limited permissions, it's an important part of their training to be teachers as 80%+ of schools in this part of the country are SIMS based. We are a teacher training school so we have large cohorts of them through twice a year, I've got religious about creating named user accounts and deactivating them once they leave. They should be DBS cleared at any rate and this way we control their access better than having a regular teacher give them their password to use (from an accountability point of view that isn't great).

ah, i can filter it to "did they get ANY points in that half term" for students whose total points are within a given range, but not accruing that many points in any given term. So I've exhausted the possibilities.
-
I just had a go at this in Discover, and with a bit of finessing, then yes. Open the behaviour section and you should see "students in behaviour point ranges" and "Behaviour points by half term". Overlay the threshold group from one with the term from the other. This will give you a venn diagram where the overlap is the kids you are interested in. drag these into your custom group. now the finessing.... you'll have to open discover administration tool and edit the graph setting to define the points intervals. You'll also need a different group created for each half term (or manually update the group each half term).

For total flexibility you could use individual reports through Assessment in SIMs. Comment Aspects and result sets would allow you to have a design where you can show the comment from the last report as well as the current ones.

FFT Aspire Progress 8 & DFE Progress 8
bobsmith replied to NormalDistribution's topic in Data Managers's Data Managers Topics
ok, in a nutshell this is what happens: kid takes test - gets marks out of something or other (let's pretend it's 100). using grade boundaries the student is given a whole level. when it comes to secondary we then look at the actual marks again, and we work out how far through the level the marks come out, so we get a fine level like 4.56 If multiply it by 6 we get a fine points score e.g. 27.36 sub level is just another lookup from the fine level. -
FFT Aspire Progress 8 & DFE Progress 8
bobsmith replied to NormalDistribution's topic in Data Managers's Data Managers Topics
fine levels is the way to go, 4matrix is much happier using them and it's all that SISRA will accept. There are a load of articles on the net warning against forecasting Progress 8, however using Progress 8 methodology can still generate useful lists of students who are "on average" under-performing. It's just the final figures produced that are dubious. -
can you clarify what you mean by reviews? SIMS has something they call "profiles" which in school speak is a full written report using statement banks. (optional if you actually use statements)

nothing wrong with deleting pupils provided they were never legally on roll.

[sims] Distributing rows dynamically from SIMS Individual report (Word 2010)
bobsmith replied to HughR's topic in MIS Systems
I realise this is a massive necropost - but I found a solution that works when nesting tables. Typically it's all or nothing when you want a subject area printed out in a report - so instead of using "hide rows without data" you can use report section breaks and "hide sections without data".- 4 replies

Hello gang I've seen so much seemingly contradictory information about how Further Additional Science counts in the different measures this year it's driving me mad. Do any of you follow the route Science Core >> Additional Science >> Further Additional Science in your school? The two main questions are: 1. does the further additional science count in the EBacc 2. does the further additional science count in the ebacc bucket in progress 8? If not does it count in the open bucket? Could any answers include links to references where possible?

I thought the results went straight to the student, unless the student has explicitly given their permission to give them to a third party (even parents)

Assessment Manager 7 change gradeset in existing aspect
bobsmith replied to emskijim's topic in MIS Systems
provided it is a similar style gradeset then you can do this - you can't change integer to grades or vice versa. it'll by default do it from today - but you can backdate it provided no results have been stored since the "new" start date.- 6 replies

the trick is to clear it as you exit, if you are legging it out ahead of the students then I'd be asking questions... I don't think there is a real need to go back and clear the building after you've all left it, just don't leave any kids behind.
-
When I spoke to the fire service last what they most wanted was for us to have cleared the buildings of people. There are so many problems with paper registers that it's only use is to occupy the time of the form tutors and students while they wait around on the field. The issue with the register is that for it to be any good it has to be fool proof - and it never is.

I'd be gobsmacked if there was a school where nobody did English Literature. While I've worked in schools where the students get entered for it even when they haven't explicitly covered the work, it was always just a handful of kids in the bottom set - not the entire cohort. As data managers our job is to advise on things like these loopholes - the headteacher carries the responsibility on the morals of using them or not. I've personally fought for kids to be taught it before being entered, but whichever way the school goes with it you've got to let them know what they can and cannot do.
