Panorama's "Wireless in schools" Program 8:30 Tonight
petectid replied to pete's topic in Wireless Networks
This whole issue in schools has arisen due to concerns voiced by one of the Teaching unions after a teacher became ill, there had recently been fitted nearby a wireless access point? -
You've probably found stuff like this already. VisiWave has a trial version not used it do not know if its fully functional but if I was doing a one off survey I would probably use a trial package. You can download and read about it here

This will only work if you never turn off your workstations, plus at about three days 75% of the lease period your workstations will attempt to renew their lease, if your server is down then they will fail.

Schools Wanted for new ICT Technical Services Co.
petectid replied to stephenwelch's topic in Educational IT Jobs
I would not question your ability stephenwelch as I do not know you, but are you not trying to sell sand to the Arabs here? -
Your right about this localzuk but if you commit another offence within three years the points stay on your licence and all offences have to be declared to your insurer who will then sting you with even higher premiums.

I know that here we pay a fee for showing DVDs, all titles of which are added to a form and sent with a payment, where I do not know as the finance manager deals with this. We can then display all the DVDs on the list in school. Would the same not apply to Audio CD Roms used by schools?

With respect Tony, yes it does do Sims integration, not MIS, they are working on a CMIS connection. Sims integration can only be achieved using extra software = extra expense. There is not any Sims integration out of the box. Do you have a Frogserver at your site?

I've got frog here PM me if you want the low down.

A few weeks? I'm sure people will back me up here but a few hours would be more like it. I'm disgusted that an LEA has no body on their staff that can see that they have been taken for a ride. This person is going to walk away with public money having done very little. Out of interest could you possibly find out how much they got paid for this Mark?

Any help would be great - Major network problems
petectid replied to jumpinjamez's topic in Wireless Networks
It will be helpful if you posted the type/model of the Netgear switches. -
In my experience of Sahara Projectors they are the fault, complete and utter cr*p. All I can say is next time you purchase buy something else. Had several prolems with these and found the company unhelpful and there repairs a temporary solution to any of the issues. Sorry I cannot be of any positive help but as you will be aware or will become aware that the projectors you have purchased are not without fault.

GP should work on both servers. Do you intend on keeping two Domain controllers? If so you can share the FSMO roles between them but there are a few rules you are best using. If your going to demote the old server then move all the FSMO roles and the Global Catalogue to the new DC. You will also need DNS on the new server if you have not installed it already. Do not demote your old server until everything works as it should or you will break the domain.
-
As Geoff mentions you need to transfer the FSMO roles to your new server, also make sure its a Global Catalogue server. How to transfer FSMO roles here

I had to phone HP on Wednesday this week as we had a system die after two days use, not unusual to have a system fail like this, having purchased 65 I always expect an early failure or even two. I do not mind dealing with any call centre wherever they are in the world, at least the call centres in India have polite agents and in my experience they do not loose there temper. They arranged for the repair to be made and I got a call from a company called Ikon the following day. I wasn't pleased as we have next business day cover so I was expecting an engineer not a phone call telling me that they did not have the parts and would phone me on Monday to arrange a date for the engineers visit. We pay quite a bit extra for next business day cover so I'm not impressed that we cannot actually get that as HP's parts distribution service can not supply parts for it. It does not matter who you purchase from we are only small fish and they do not seem to appreciate our custom.

Found a fix for this if anyone has the same issue? Go to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Binn, run SVRNETCN.exe and enable TCP/IP. Will need to restart the SQL service for it to take effect. The fix holds even after a reboot.

What speed Internet do you get provided from your LEA
petectid replied to mattpant's topic in Wireless Networks
We are in East Lancs Chris and had four ADSL lines put in by Cleo, not for us but for 4 local Primary Schools who were originally connected through the local FE College which is being rebuilt, so their connections were re-routed via our wireless link. -
Where do you get your information from? Look at any new features in Vista and I will name a technology some of them years old that were there first, for instance Aero looks alot like Suns Looking Glass. There is not really anything new in Vista. At least when Apple changed its Os strategy it built a new kernel based on BSD API and Mach API, and did not stick with the same rubbish we have suffered for years. Okay they have made enhancements but for all we know they could just be more patches to the ever growing sea of windows source code.

Although this does not as yet appear to affect WSUS I do not know why this is happening. WSUS is installed on W2K3 SP1 member server using the WMSDE that WSUS installer provides. The SQL service manager picks up all other SQL instances on our domain and the admin domain but does not see its own. The registry keys for the database are all there and the permissions on the keys are correct. So why can I not see the WSUS instance? Looking at the services I have three MSSQL$WSUS (this service is running) and SQLAgent$WSUS and the MSSQLServerADHelper
