Why buy these when you could save £15.30 per unit buying a true thin client box, the HP Compaq t5125 Thin Client £167.69 from the same vendor, probably cheaper elsewhere, and takes up less space?

Will the new DC automatically be a Global Catalogue server, or do you not have to set it up as such?

I would not worry about your comments Pete your right. They are asking for someone who has "HND, degree or professional qualification", this is not a very good move for someone with experience and these qualifications, not on that income anyway. I left a post paying more to move to my present post, a 3.5K pay increase and I would say that Northants is a damn site closer to the south of England than we are up here in the North West.

Thats okay unless you are going to image the machines then use sysprep as this will knack all your settings. Sysprep kills the default user profile replacing it with the contents of the local administrator profile. So if you intend to sysprep then do all dos_box suggests in the local administrator account, no need to copy any profiles, if it works there it will work once you sysprep it.

Therefore if the school asks you to do the job and you do not decline because you think it unsafe, (this is your right). If anything goes wrong then you have a strong case against your employer. This did happen to a colleague of mine, a science technician who was asked to repair the Venetian blinds in a lab. Because of benching he had to place the stepladder on the work surface, not the floor. He should not have used the ladders on the bench, but he had never been trained in the use of steps so his misuse of the equipment was put down to his employer not training him in equipment use. As he came down off the ladder he stepped back into a sink fell and smashed his elbow, he never worked again though he was nearing retirement. The Authority did not win the case and he received damages. Needless to say we were now unable to use any stepladders from that day on in the Borough.

That all depends Mark, on whether the school had asked him to do the job. If he decided himself to install these new cables then he could also loose his job, as he was doing something he ought not to have been doing.

Can I make the suggestion that all items published outside the forum/blogs are proof read, as there are mistakes in need of correction. Take a look at the notes published from the recent Northern conference for example.

If your using Client sets will your systems not need static ip addresses? The only way I can see to do this is using a Destination set which only allows certain sites, yet you could not use this on a per room basis?

Surely everything should run under either the Local System Account, the NT Authority\LocalService or NT Authority\NetworkService or an account which is setup to be used by a particular service like virus update package. If your server is new then would any service be using the administrator account to log on? If so you could simply change the logon details for the service.

I'd would look into one of the free content managment systems available ie Mambo, Joomla etc. These will make life alot easier and you can produce web sites that look very professional. Your web host will need to support MySQL and PHP, though this is fairly standard now.

Not far away from you Chris and our Broadband is wireless, I wouldn’t complain to much if we got 2Mb but on fast days we get closer to 1.5 and this has also been hived out to two local primary schools who connect to our internet feed via DSL links. Our RBC should be supplying 8Mb according to their website they fulfil these government requirements?

GrumbleDook, do you think that an inspection team is going to have time to speak with IT technicians or Network Managers? Especially when they have such little time in which to interview the entire management team and a selection of Departmental Heads and Teachers. The inspection process is only concerned with whether a school is getting results, improving or has the capacity to improve if the inspection finds fault. If the IT support is doing a good job then certain aspects of school management will come out better. If IT is badly used or resourced it is not your fault but is the fault of leadership and management, whether the NM is part of that is debatable, though I can check this out if you want to know.

If this happens then there is a mechanism in place for the school to challenge the judgement. The draft report will arrive in the Heads email; the school then has 24hrs to respond to the reports findings. If he/she feels that they are not correct, then the inspector may change the report. The case you bring to light here seems unusual as some schools may be running on a thin client network and there desktop kit may be re-used old workstations, therefore they may not look good but would be running current software on a current operating system. I know of schools like this that have come out very well after the inspection, yet a large proportion of their IT infrastructure at desktop was old junk. One issue that could allow such a report to be published is the general lack of understanding by heads of how a Section 5 inspection works. Even though they have all received information explaining every detail. Therefore many Heads miss the window for challenging findings, simply because they do not check their email or read documentation.
