I'm not a genius with either IIS (some would say I'm not a genius with most things) but would creating an entry for selfupdate under the WSUS Administration website using the same settings as the Default Website entry be worth a try?

Some computer not updating their computer policy
ajs replied to Ambient's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
I've read a few online support forums where people have ended up demoting and promoting a DC to fix this sort of issue but there's no guarantee it'll work and I guess you'll never get to the real cause of the problem. Presumably the FRS on COOPER3K is running? -

...which helpfully tells you that it could affect Group Policy problems. I'm slightly shocked that an MS error message could be so helpful! :-) Shame it doesn't tell you exactly how it failed but at least you've got a starting point. -
I've never heard that it applies to Volume Licenses though?

What output do you get from gpresult? -
I thought you might have done but couldn't resist asking anyway :-)

Forgive me if I'm wrong but shouldn't that actually include the IP address/name of your server hosting WSUS (unless of course it actually is called IP)

I was just thinking the same thing. Before I installed a new server last October half-term I had spent most of the year running with less than 10GB free on the data server.

Off the top of my head you can either: Build them as CC3 workstations, change the workstation type to Personal and specify the user that will use them as a priveleged user. They can then use RM Synchronise to keep their week in sync between home and school and still have enough freedom to happily use the laptop at home. Or Add them to the domain in the usual way but make sure you keep them out of the Establishments OU on the DC. This way they won't interact in anyway with the CC3 network and you can manage them however you wish :-)

There's just been a post on RM Communities saying that they released the SR2 packs so that they would arrive before schools close for next week. As a result, some schools have received them before they've finished all the downloads and tech articles. :-)

CC4 - Network drives are not displayed
ajs replied to bertster's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Assuming you don't have access to the updates from RM, I'd look at getting your support contract sorted out so you can grab all the latest updates and bring the network up to speed. At the very least, with a support contract, somebody from RM will take a look at the server and tell you if you're missing any vital updates that could solve the problem. I imagine they'll do out-of-contract support but it probably won't be cheap. -
My only thinking was you could use it configure and deploy UltraVNC in an easy way. (although it is a Friday so I'm probably not understanding what it is you're looking to do anyway :-)

Have you looked at using Skeep VNC console? (Skeep VNC Console)

Digital Blue - LEGO Stop Animation Suite
ajs replied to stephensavage1986's topic in Educational Software
I've recently managed to convince a suite of 15 computers that they want to run both version 2 and 3 of the Digi Blue software. Biggest problem I came across (apart from an incredibly badly-built custom package for version 2) was that version 3 seems to want you to wait at least 15-20 seconds between plugging in the camera and loading the software (otherwise you get the errors about unable to find right filters) If I hadn't already been going bald when I started then I certainly would have by the time I'd finished. -
Does it give any indications (Update numbers? Release Dates?) as to what updates are required before SR2 can be installed? I know RM have just released CC4UPD081 this morning but that's a post-SR2 update.

There was recently an update on RM's website about some of their models which have an NVIDIA NForce NIC which matched exactly the problem of them taking forever to connect to the network and do GP stuff. I imagine, although I haven't checked, that the latest driver from NVIDIA's site may be worth a shot.

I was thinking Trojan would be more appropriate given the circumstances ;-)

ajs's Subscriptions (gpodder.net) Before you ask: no, I've no idea how or when I'm going to get time to listen to them (e.g. I'm currently still listening to some episodes from 2009 for some podcasts. I'm thinking maybe I should give up :-)

I may be mistaken (and I do hope someone will correct me if I am) but I think the application of Group Policy settings runs in a different context than the user you're logging in as. Unfortunately, I've no idea off the top of my head what context that is likely to be so I don't know what sort of Security Group etc you'd need to look at to get the Group Policy settings to talk to the server. Sorry that isn't much help but hopefully it's better than a kick in the teeth!

I imagine there is a way since there are options on RM networks to configure it. I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can figure it out if you like.

What do you think of my new SERVER? HP Pavilion s3732
ajs replied to bertster's topic in Windows Server 2000/2003
I've recently started visiting a Primary School that's in a very similar position. They've been running RM Classmate for a few years and last year started looking at moving away onto a proper domain etc. Company they went with supplied them with a nice batch of about 20 Toshiba laptops running XP Pro and a shiny 2003 R2 server. However, for whatever reason, they decided that the server would just sit and host a few Exchange mailboxes and the laptops would all have automatic local admin logons and sit in a workgroup. They also didn't bother with any form of AV at all. :-) -
Good point. I'd certainly try and lock the desktop down without turning off right click wherever possible. Student logons at my previous school had right click turned off and in the end we turned it back on for Year 9 and upwards because it just became too much of a pain.

I've used USB -> Serial converters with numerous serial boards over the past few years and never had a problem with them (as long as the converter is always plugged into the same USB port). Can't imagine there'd be any problems using them on Macs.

Ditto with the question about Windows 7. My other half's laptop runs Vista and will only see all the partitions on my encrypted USB drive if the drive is plugged in before Vista boots. Otherwise it only sees the application part and not the data part, which is annoying.

User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Explorer -> Remove Windows Explorer's Default Context Menu Is that the option you're looking for? If it is, one thing to note is that when enabled, it will prevent the user from bringing up the properties window of any file, even when launched from the File menu. Annoying :-)
