  1. Well that's not good - I was hoping you'd have the same problem and would then fix it so I could steal the solution :-)
  2. Just out of interest, if you try and connect to the WLAN when you've got a wired connection, does DHCP work then? I'm only asking cause I had an Acer laptop presented to me a while ago that would only connect to a secured WLAN once it had seen a working wired connection. As long as the laptop wasn't turned off for more than a few minutes then everything continued to work.
  3. Looks OK to me, although shouldn't the description entry say KB971029 rather than KB925486? Other than that, copy the folder into Tools, update Package List and you should be able to assign it :-)

    Budgets

When I was Network Manager for a Technology College with approx 1000 students, I didn't have a specific budget at all. The money for the MS licensing was always set aside but that was pretty much it. As adamchapman, who replaced me, will probably tell you, it was a case of (sometimes literally) having to beg with management in order to get access to any money to do anything. :-)
  5. In the interests of not hijacking the thread, I've emailed you!
  6. Even better was the fact that there was only about 230GB for the entire school's data! I'm quite proud that I managed to keep it running for so long without any major hiccups. Kept it running for a week with about 100MB of free space on C at one point.

    .NET 2.0 Problem

Have you tried using the dotnetfx cleanup tool? Aaron Stebner's WebLog : .NET Framework Cleanup Tool User's Guide
  8. I used it for about 2 years plus at my previous school. There were a couple of glitches, especially when IE7 was released and Google had issues with attachments and temporary files, but they were mostly sorted by the time I left. On the whole it worked quite well, but then we were moving from a setup that only allowed the admin staff to have email. They were the only ones who had real trouble moving over since they were used to Exchange/Outlook. Other than that, it was the same problems that I'm sure lots of other edugeekers have come across: staff not sending emails to the correct list and spamming the entire school instead. etc etc ;-) Personally, from an administration standpoint, I'd probably have preferred to go with Exchange but if your budget is limited (as mine was) then it was certainly a good move.
  9. There were rumblings of the connection to YHGfL being upgraded to 100MB but it was never really made clear how this was going to work: a) each school would have 100MB connection or b) the overall connection for schools would be 100MB with each school taking a small cut of the bandwidth. There's probably the letter from North Lincs buried somewhere in the remains of my filing (unless you've thrown it all out) but I would assume that the upgrade has actually happened.
  10. When I wanted to introduce a 2003 R2 server into the domain I also had to hunt for adprep.exe In the end I used a MS url that I'd found a year or two before that allows you to request specific hotfixes without having to ring through to support. I may still have the copy of adprep that i got but if not I'll dig out the URL at some point over the weekend.
  11. From what I remember from my shop days doing W98 installs, the keys aren't interchangeable.
  12. You're welcome. Just one thing to point out - it appears there some formatting issues when I copied and pasted the text in. The last two lines should finish have REG_SZ and not REG _SZ or REG_S Z like they seem to have. I'm sure you all spotted that but didn't want anyone banging their heads too much because of it :-)
  13. The following is what I put in the shutdown script to reset the registry keys and disable the keyboard shortcut for the High Contrast theme. Seemed to work OK but of course it does rely on the Luna theme files actually being present on the computer. dim objshell set objshell = createobject("Wscript.Shell") ' Fix logon theme by setting the registry keys to point to the Luna XP theme objshell.regwrite "HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager\dllName","%systemroot%\Resources\Themes\Luna\Luna.msstyles","REG_SZ" objshell.regwrite "HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager\ThemeActive","1","REG_SZ" ' Disable StickyKeys and HighContrast to prevent users from easily changing the logon theme and causing issues objshell.regwrite "HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Accessibility\HighContrast\Flags","122","REG_SZ" objshell.regwrite "HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Accessibility\StickyKeys\Flags","506","REG_SZ"
  14. The most common issue I found is when students figure out one of the key combinations for turning on accessibility options (usually one of the high contrast themes). Turning the theme on and then off again at the logon screen doesn't reset the registry keys properly and the logon screen always then defaults to the classic look. In the end I wrote a small script that ran when the PC was shut down and reset the registry keys to point to the Luna theme so when they next booted up, they all had the correct logon theme. I'll see if I can dig it out and send it over to you.
  15. That's the exact solution that took me about 12 months to figure out a few years ago at my previous job. Didn't help that the company who installed the servers kept telling me that absolutely everything had to go through the LA's proxy. It was only when I was setting up some web publishing rules for an internal IT Faculty site that I realised what web chaining rules needed altering.
  16. Have you tried disabling the "automatic restart on failure" option so you can actually get to the BSOD and see what error message it's giving?
  17. I've seen a few machines over the years exhibit similar problems due to a corrupted prefetch file. Deleting the files from the c:\windows\prefetch is safe because they'll just get recreated as needed. If the machine boots up quicker after deleting them, but then slows down once they're recreated, there is a MS document somewhere that details what registry keys you can change to affect how prefetch files are created.
  18. I've purchased two of the CP1515N printers and never had a problem setting them up as network printers on a 2003 domain. My only concern with the units is that they can be a little eager to go through the toner and a full set of toner can cost a fair bit more than the actual cost of the printer. If you can keep the printing down so that you're not going through a full set of toner every other week then they are great little printers in my experience.
  19. So you're the lucky person who they picked to replace me at Baysgarth? Apologies now for the size/state of the office and for any issues you run up against that are probably my fault ;-) (oh and they may have fixed this by the time you start, but don't try too hard to turn off the tap in the ICT Office, apparently it's been that way for 15+ years). Enjoy :-)

    offline files

We have a member of the Technology faculty that every so often brings his laptop up with the same error you're seeing. While it was intriguing the first two times, it soon became annoying so we took a quick look into his network area. It would seem he likes to have as few directories as possible in his area so every month makes one called (for example ) "09 - 10 oct v2" and copies everything from the previous folder into it (thus duplicating all his work). Digging through some of the directories, it turns out he was hitting the joyous Windows issue of "I've let you somehow create a file within a path longer than 255 characters but I'm going to make you jump through hoops to actually access the file(s)/folder(s)" We've tried explaining to him that although being organised is good, there is a such a thing as being too organised but it doesn't seem to sink in. Even when we kept an eye on a few problem directories for a month or two and everything worked he couldn't understand why the syncing problem reappeared as soon as he started dumping stuff in there again. I'd give the user's area a quick once over and see if there are any deeply nested directories.
  21. You'll need to edit the registry permissions on (I think) the following registry key: HKLM\Software\SmartTech\Synchroneyes 6.1 so that the teacher has full permissions. I currently add the staff security group to the registry key which prevents students from altering the message if they happen to get access to the teacher software.
  22. Except for a small handful, all staff with laptops are forced to use their domain logons using cached credentials. They are often reminded that the laptop will only cache one set of details so they need to make sure that they log back in as soon asd possible if they let someone else use their laptop. They're also given local admin rights through Group Policy so they can install their own printers and other peripherals but are also aware that software installs will be monitored and checked regulaly to make sure nothing is installed that shouldn't be. Access to Add/Remove Programs is disabled to ensure they don't easily or accidentally uninstall anything major like Office.
  23. The only problem that you could run into with an RM CC package is if it uses some shared resources (such as Serif PagePlus' Wizards). These are usually hardcoded to be installed onto the P: drive which (as you're probably aware) is what RM uses for its Shared Areas. But as other people have said, there shouldn't be a problem most of the time.
  24. Awesome! I can see this making my life a lot easier :-)
  25. We've recently had a presentation by Frog and support for Serco was mentioned. We were even shown a few live websites of schools running Frog and Serco that the representative had access to. While there are one or two sections of Frog that don't receive realtime updates from Serco, the support certainly seems to be there.
