  1. Server room 19-20oC our Office, Just about coping with the fire exit open and two big fans moving the hot air around the room! Why do computers/servers get better looked after than us 'Humans'?
  2. We give local users Power User rights to allow them to install Drivers but that is all. Many moons ago we allowed them Admin rights and it was the biggest mistake we had ever done. Software/Games installed, Torrent Apps, you name it it was on them.
  3. Sorry for the delay, in GPO we have set the following up: We have a group called SIMS (that all staff that need access to SIMS are members off). Then we allow this SIMS group Modify Access to the following: Registory Settings HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Interface HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib Folder Settings %ProgramFiles%\SIMS\*.* File Settings %WINDIR%\SIMS.INI Then the SIMS .NET shurtcut is setup to do a UPDATE check before starting: "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\SIMSLoad.exe" "C:\Program Files (x86)\SIMS\SIMS .net\Pulsar.exe"
  4. We look after the Projector and Computer, but due to my other job out side of school, I end up looking after all the Lights, sound, desk ect.
  5. A bit OTT but a 'Airport Scanner' type thing? http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6a00d8341c630a53ef0120a8c910e1970b-600wi
  6. We use SSL247 for a wildcard SSL and we pay by School PO.
  7. They do at times shout "make way for the guard", but no ever takes any notice till they get stud on!
  8. I know you have said other than MS PowerPoint, but we use ShowPoint to keep an eye on a folder that is saved on a shared area. Our office staff update the PowerPoint when it needed witch auto updates the screen with no need for interaction. The PC auto boots in the morning and a script shuts it down in the evening.
  9. We have two server rooms (Split Site) with there own Big UPS to allow them to shutdown. We then we have three of our comms cabinets that have small UPS to power our PoE switches, this allows the VoIP Phones to work for two hours during power outages (we have a very faulty main intake s power goes down on monthly basses).
  10. Spend a lot of time outside, hill walking, climbing, boating... Then I also do a lot of work in Theatre doing lighting, sound, stage hand (Crew).
  11. It happens to us all. Good to hear you know where it messed up so you know where to look.
  12. We have used Thecus for years and we love them, currently have 4 of them on site doing difrent things. We did use Netgear Ready NAS but they was rubbish. I can confirm that Thecus do window based boxes now but there New Thecus OS works well with AD and windows security.
  13. We use Solus 3 at the server and let SIMS do an update at the client side when the software is started. We have setup in GPO parts of the registry and folders that SIMS needs staff assess to allow the updates to work as a restricted user. This works very well for us. very little effort is needed from us.
  14. Don't get me started on USBs, staff and students alike here save there only copy of work onto USB and WHEN not IF they stop working or they delete the work, they expect us to recover the work. We wanted to stop USB drive access but SLT don't like that idea. Staff and Students have remote access to the files too so have no need for the USBs.
  15. All Staff and 6th Form, We have a Photo, name, form (for students) and Rank (Sixth Form, Staff, Contractor, Head...). The bar-code has no use any more, but was for the Library system. We have left it there with the Users login name below.
  16. We have a PR department that did ours. The white shade is a little bit of a pain to see icon text at times.
  17. We use a program called 'any_proxy' installed on Vyatta or VyOS. We did need to tweak it a little to stop it from logging as this would fill up a 1TB in a day.
  18. When we replace our pupil screens we replace with widescreen (they take up no more space on the desk as the keyboard is normally bigger). For staff we have stayed with 4:3 as the projectors are all 4:3.
  19. Did you save the changes? If not, just reboot the switch (assuming the old config was saved).
  20. Trying to get warm! We had no power yesterday and today there is no heating.
