Morning all. I was wondering if any of you have the installer for the last 'free' version of MinecraftEdu prior to it's 30th Jun cut off? I'm not sure of it's version number. Cheers Stu

Nope. It was built as a full, fresh image and imaged using Acronis. I may have made a bit of a breakthrough. I've created a new profile and it seems to work, now?! I need to test it more and try and 'break' it, but that'll have to wait until tomorrow as i've got to power off everything for some electrical work happening tonight. Typical. Still no idea what was causing it, but it's progress though and i'll report back tomorrow. Cheers for the help so far. Stu

Thanks for the reply. Can't update through student as i'm guessing it's a secure connection. Fully updated through Administrator without problems.

Windows 7 Client Server 2008 R2 It was hard to come up with a title for the thread as i have went around in circles for 2 days now. Student user has a basic mandatory profile. Log it on, on a fresh image. Every GPO is working fine. Internet, all fine and loads everything fine. Log off. Log back on again and HTTPS sites stop working. Everything looks fine in Internet Options. SSL 3.0 enabled. This continues until i delete the local copy of the profile. This is IE9 and Chrome. Chrome using system settings. FF works and also using system settings. Time server is fine as it works for admin and the student when it first logs on. I've taken machines and users out of usual OU and put it in an OU with only the Default Domain Policy where it only gets the proxy details (which is where i'm having another problem, but one thing at a time). Any thoughts at all? Driving me crazy and taking far too long. Cheers Stu

Sorted it. Bizarre. Hopefully someone can shed some light on something i need to set up or disable... I had one Policy mapping 2 drives. One for everyone, the second only for teachers. The way i set it up was to not allow students access to the 'T' drive. So it would try to map it for the student and then fail, but suppress the error and continue. Whereas on Win 7, it suppresses the error and then doesn't allow anything else. I don't think it's down to the order, either! Frustrating, but light at the end of the tunnel. Any ideas what i may or may not be missing? Cheers Stu

Nothing that jumps out, unless i'm looking in the wrong place. The folder redirections GPO that i'm using to test, applies the redirection correctly. But no sign of proxy from DDP.

Another update... If i log on as a user with slightly elevated privilages first (I still can't see where they are), the student logs on and get's all settings as it's meant to. If i log on as the student first, the user with elevated priveleges doesn't get the settings it would have if it was logged on first!!!

Morning all. I have what i think may be a bizarre problem. We have an 2008 R2 + XP network. I'm moving over to Windows 7 and the current set up will not work at all. That's a Default Domain Policy containing 'defaults' and Proxy Server Details. Then 4/5 other GPOs containing specific Preferences, such as Drive Mapping, Document / Desktop redirections. This is working perfectly in XP. Now i've built a test Windows 7 PC, Proxy settings aren't applied for a student. After a bit of trial and error, it seems that as soon as there's a policy containing a User Preference, the proxy settings (my indicator) from DDP aren't applied. I'm very rusty in my GPO testing after spending a good 3 years messing about with it, so pardon the lack of other information gathered. I set up a new OU structure where the Win 7 Machine and Users are separate. Proxy is fine when only inheriting from DDP. As soon as there's a Preference added, it stops working again. I'd thought that getting the preferences working with XP would be the difficult part and that they'd be tailor made for Win 7. How wrong I was! Any help appreciated. Cheers Stu

Cheers Stu EDIT: I've discovered that if i add a user to another secutirty group, it works fine. But from what i can tell, the group is not a member of any Domain Admins or member of any other elevated groups!!!

Thanks for the reply Michael. No trusts, no data migration, completely fresh start for an entirely new department. I'm looking for any new practices before i start copying anything across, idea or otherwise!

Morning all! I am setting up a separate network from the original school network in a new building. A very simple network, one box, a DC, Server 2008 R2 Std, 10 permanent users (as well as visiting students) and the traffic is completely disconnected with the school now. What i'd like to know is what you do for user accounts / profiles / logon scripts etc. I'm new to Server 2008 so I'm a bit confused as to where to start and if there's any new features i can use. Previously, we had the user, a redirected my documents folder (through AD home folder) and a redirected App Data (due to a large amount of settings, through GPO) as well as a logon script to map printers and a couple of network drives. Happy to do this again, but don't want to go ahead and do it if there's a simpler way of doing things etc. Cheers Stu PS - XP Clients, for now.

Sadly a Uni student we had recently already had the job of auditting. Good to have these ideas for the next time, as no matter how much we battle it, there will be more work experience weeks...

Morning all. Need some ideas! We've had 2 work experience students in this week. We've had them salvaging parts, testing and sorting a load of stock for the last 3 days. We're now out of ideas of what they can do. We've got very little on, that they could get involved in. Any ideas welcome!

Evenin' all. We now redirect application data as it was slowing log ons drastically. We are using one mandatory profile for a group of users. This group log on anywhere on site and get a start menu, desktop and application data from a redirection GPO. We have both MS Office and Open Office on our system. I've had two similar problems. With MS Office, students using Publisher were opening the software and getting each others work 'recovered'. Now with Open Office they're gettings omething similar, where it says that you're opening someone elses document. Surely someone else has had similar issues implementing a similar system? I opened the profile and stopped autorecovery for publisher. Haven't had any confirmation if that has fixed the problem yet. Any help apreciated. Cheers Stu

Thanks for all the replies. I had a bad feeling you'd say that. Is there any other way of making sure they don't write back to the shared roaming profile on the server, other than write permissions on the folder? This is what i did when we had an issue with mandatory profiles and temp internet files and it's worked fine for 18 months. But now i'm trimming and generalising them, i'm looking for a different solution. I'm sure it was a tiny, shared, roaming profile for 50 staff and it was only a small directory when i started here. I'm sure i have more questions, but need a coffee down me first!

Afternoon All. I've had a search and there's nothing that seems to match my situation. We have changed all our Profiles to mandatory profiles, if they weren't before. All staff sharing one profile etc. We now redirect App Data, Start Menus, Desktops and Documents through GPO. This seems to be working fine on the domain. However the some staff use laptops at home. They were set as open profiles and worked on laptops. The profile cached, offline files synced etc. However none of these work with the new redirection set up and mandatory profile. Am i missing something obvious? Do i need to do something different now for the profiles to cache etc? I have a separate redirection for the Laptops OU. I set it to copy contents to the new location so it would be available offline. Is that correct? Any suggestions welcome. Cheers Stu

Found the location of the problem now. Just need to find out what it is. It seems to be something to do with LAN Ranger, which we're trying to phase out anyway.

When uploading a file to our Learning Platform (as well as saving docs / loading docs generally), you open the dialogue box and select the file you want from a USB stick for example. You want to go and upload a file from the same folder, but you open the dialogue box and it reverts back to the My Documents folder rather than the last folder you were in, meaning you have to go searching down a potential forest of folders to get back to the original folder. This will happen for just saving a document in Word etc too. As far as we can tell, we only restrict the C drive, but if the original folder is the E drive for example, it's not staying. Works fine as technician, obviously. Any ideas? Cheers Stu

Sorry about the lack of reply. Well after i formated the drive (taking 2 days or so!) it still didn't work. Thought, 'balls to it' and used the DVD to restore to factory settings. It only retruned it to XP So it looks like i'm sorted. Thanks for the help. Cheers Stu

Well i used the other CD drive and i'm back to the .SIF error. Trying another format, using acronis. Hoping that may sort any bad sectors. Going to take an age though. I'll be back though, don't worry.
