Yea it's to do with IE using a different method than any other browser when opening Office files. Authentication requests when you open Office documents Some of those fixes may help you depening on how your Moodle server is hosted. Looks likely I'm going to have to hack around some Moodle code to block IE from doing it's stuff, if that's even possible.

One of the colleges I work with has this problem and I'm just investigating it. By any chance are the machines affected Windows 7 and I'm assuming your on server 2008?

I really would avoid Shibboleth like the plague with Moodle. The auth is horrible at best and not one I've used often with the institutions I support. Also requires code changes to allow manual auth's through the Moodle login. Can you use alternative methods I.E LDAP rather than Shibboleth?

Assuming this is Moodle, the only way is to use the 'Social' course format. Course formats - MoodleDocs In 2.0 you can have centralised blocks which could display Latest News similar to the frontpage.
