Your Finance staff appear to be spoilt . I hope they're reviewing the IT budget accordingly. 2x for Finance means 4x for IT then. It used to only be the preserve of IT staff to have multiple screens and that was if you were lucky.

In the past 2x 19" widescreen monitors, then finally they decided to buy IT some decent kit and we had 2x 22" widescreen monitors. In another role I had a single Samsung to start, the ancient PC couldn't cope with dual screens. Once I upgraded it then a 19" monitor as screen 2. Then a 24" no-body wanted as it has a scratch on the screen. In the end I brought 2x 22" Full HD Dell monitors myself off eBay to use. When I leave, they'll leave with me.

I read about some issues with Windows 10 and Movie Maker but it is installed and seems to be working fine. With Windows 10 Education 1709. .

Any updates on this post at all?

Poor planning from SLT and management though, not planning to replace kit once it's reached the end of it's useful life.

Nope, everytime it's been brought up I think the SBM thinks "great we can budget that cost" without realising at the end they've basically paid over the odds for what is now 5x year old equipment.

What sort of licence do you have for imaging the machines? With Windows 7 so close to end-of-life, is there any reason why you can't go to Windows 10?

This is symptomatic of the "Let's fix EVERYTHING with IT" kind of mindset though in schools. Not everything requires an IT solution to a problem. E.g. Sometimes it just needs the admin team to do their actual job of signing people in and out.

With all due respect - if you didn't get any training on Windows 10 from a support perspective, why should the users? Call me cynical but in IT we already get enough of the attitude of "go and figure it out" from management etc towards training and courses. To do that just for the users and not the IT team is a poor show. In an ideal world, the entire IT team would get training first on the kit. Then afterwards the users, but NOT from IT.

Ours was all decided by others, admin etc, before I started this role. I only found out about it when the Inventry engineer turned up on the day. I can ask but I don't expect a reply to be honest.

How do you know the RAM and CPU are any good if the motherboard has died? Sometimes when it dies it takes everything else down with it.

AFAIK it's either with a VPN link back to your main site, or simpler to get each school to use their own - not what you asked I know but as the cloud version of SIMs an FMS still seems light years away, unless you move to another MIS I can't see many options. #SLTPipeDream

Stone or ICT Direct are the ones I had as contenders. Our Trust after some arguments has funded us with a load of brand new kit thankfully.

How have you setup the storage on it, RAID, Storage spaces direct etc? What sort of price did that cost? Any backup of that at all? Any surge/UPS connected to it?

What's the reason behind the "Macs" route? A standard Windows PC of i5, 8GB RAM and an SSD is adequate enough for video editing these days, I've done far more at work on far worse hardware. How are you going to be storing the footage and raw files etc? Unless you've got dedicated drives or a NAS etc that's going to be the biggest challenge. Rendering speed over the network or access times. Brilliant idea, this was toyed with at one school but IIRC never got off the drawing board. I'd love to be involved with something like this, sounds like then school wants to develop the students skills to be fair.

The scanned versions of them I have on the PC! I have digital copies and original hard-copies. To clarify I meant about the arbitrary decision of "Oh we'll expire this digital thing in x months" sort of approach, just seems so random and illogical. Cashless society - depends on your opinion, but cashless is tracked for every penny you spend :/ As long as they realised every "feature" on their (let's face it - a wishlist) generally comes at an added cost and not as standard with some e.g. basic car v the model with everything in (as extras) isn't going to cost the same as the base model did. Adobe, Microsoft etc have figured this out now and that's the way it's going to stay for the foreseeable future. All extras can be added or activated at an additional cost. But in that model of sales/support when does it end? E.g. Do we charge for support per ticket or per user? As long as it's used for that purpose and not some ulterior motives we've probably all seen in schools "data" used for. For me the Inventry system proves what I already know, that I never leave work on time when I'm supposed to finish. We're getting that setup too.

Ours was all decided upon before I even started there, first I knew of it was the guy turning up and asking for IP addresses etc. Typical school-IT communication path there. To that end the powers-that-be decided to pay for the system and support, I'm going to let them deal with the issues.

Have you tried the Inventry Evac bit out yet? It apparently does work on an iPad but not yet had chance to try it. I'm curious e.g I'd like to put it on an iPad, in a lockbox at the firepoint. So when there's a fire, break the lockbox/glass, unlock the iPad and run the app - BUT there's a whole lot of variables there for it to work.

But... I thought Macs, ixxxx devices etc just "worked"? Also the two I'm hearing about are this Jamf or Mosyele. How do you find this Jamf stuff? Pros/Cons.
