  1. What kind of price/budget have you been allocated for this out of interest? We're in a similar and even on a modest NAS we're looking at a couple of grand at least
  2. We get the same issue. Bear in mind all it is is a fancy label printer I believe with thermal transfer printing which isn't going to produce the best quality image.
  3. True - but how many of us would succeed in using that argument with getting new computers into schools? "Here's the bill for the new computers, it's the cost of doing education". Also denying students the ability to pay in cash (a legitimate method of currency) schools could potentially be in hot water by discriminating against students from poorer backgrounds. Their parents might not have access to online banking, internet, computers at home etc. I for one still pay for a lot of things in cash.
  4. How can they make money out of a currency change/update? I don't see how schools and orgs should be footing the bill when it's the govt who's decided to change things.
  5. Hi All, I've after some advice on getting a wireless headset for our Reception phone at the school. It's an NEC DT300 Series DTL-32D-1P (BK) TEL Model DLV (XD) Z-Y (BK) phone. It has a headset socket and a handset socket on the bottom of the unit. There's the handset plugged into the handset socket, but nothing plugged into the headset socket. I'd like our Reception staff to be able to use the wireless headset and/or handset if they want. With the headset connected, can they still use both the normal phone handset and the headset if they choose? From some research I've come across these two that seem like they might do the job, but I'm an IT guy not a phone guy. I've just been asked to have a look at the options for our admin team for a headset, but want to make sure we get one that works with the reception phone. Would these work with the phone for a wireless headset and a remote answer from the headset? Has anybody had any experience using the NEC phone model or any of these units below? Headset - Plantronics CS510 (1 ear) or Plantronics CS520 (2 ear) https://www.headsets4business.co.uk/product/plantronics-cs510-cs520-wireless-headset Remote answer unit/lifter - Plantronics HL10 Lifter https://www.headsets4business.co.uk/product/hl10-phone-lifter/ Thanks
  6. Well the rain stopped me from dusting out the computers as I'd planned. But got a few others done today I'd pencilled down for end of the week instead. You win some, you lose some.
  7. I had a forced 2-weeks off over Xmas, so Feb is a great time for me to get some work done. Computer upgrades and rebuilds, loads of outstanding stuff from the summer and other various jobs.
  8. What issues did you encounter with the QNAP can I ask?
  9. Surely privacy and GDPR are going to be the biggest issues surely?
  10. True But that's what £3 a student? I'm sure a lot of us could rig up something similar with the shortcuts etc but for £3? Our time spent doing it would cost more. Each school will vary but my 2-cents support time is better spent doing stuff that actually improves the school, education etc. If that's one thing I can spend less time doing that and more time on more important things - I'd call that a win!
  11. I shall take a PUNt on the lottery tomorrow.
  12. We use RM unify here. Compared to other things I've used it's a killer app IMHO. It just works. I can add tiles for staff (teaching/non-teaching or both), students etc. It saves people having to remember URLs, web-pages etc. Works with Office 365 for us. That and a sync from our MIS overnight creates new accounts for users as required.
  13. What sort of requirement out of interest? For example CCTV and DBS stuff used within schools for the public safety/safeguarding normally trumps consent doesn't it? As they are claimed to have wider aspects such as the public safety/safeguarding etc?
  14. Seeing as you have no direct control over search results, other webpages or whatever google decides to index - surely the authoritative source of information should be the school's own website? Or am I overthinking it?
  15. Is it a remote site miles away or just an outbuilding etc of sorts on the premises? It's either fibre or a site-to-site VPN as other posters have already mentioned.
  16. Seeing as all big companies use the "for training and quality assurance" excuses when recording their calls, I can't see any issue with schools doing it?
  17. What kit do you have at the moment?
  18. In my head I would have thought bit was easier to have a slot for each period of the day where students are staff are supposed to be. E.g. ours don't have a slot for reg or for our last lesson for year 11s which I find odd.
  19. I'll see if I can check out some of mine over half-term. I've got 600 series boards here and Windows 10 with Smart Notebook 11.4 on at least 2x of our IT Suites that have one of these boards. Had no issues reported.
  20. YMMV as we all do different things and have different ideas - but my 2-cents is that after what 7-8x years of use, those Macs are now at the end of their useful lifespan (in a support capacity). If that was a PC they'd be no argument about replacing it due to age.
  21. It does strike me these days, that machines being started in the morning for staff by WOL is purely due to how long the old computers used to take to boot up. But the practice hadn't changed much. Like you say with an SSD a decent spec machine is a couple of minutes at most. Made me realise how some staff had been mollycoddled when one of them asked me how to switch their computer on - as for years it was already switched on for them when they came in in the morning.
  22. I ended up buying this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dusters-EG-1000-UK-Electric-Air-Duster/dp/B073F9NY1X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=B073F9NY1X&qid=1580808555&sr=8-1 and just using an extension lead. I take them outside during holidays and blast them out - health and safety and all! The lack of storage space is interesting to see it's more of a common problem than I realised with IT departments. It's ALWAYS been a problem wherever I've worked.
  23. Lamp projectors great to start with. Pain in the bum in later years as well as managing bulb stock (which in one team only seemed to be me who was able to do it properly for some reason) Lamp-free ones - only experienced Casio but they seem to be pretty good. No lamp changes. The move (funds allowing) would be to replace with large touch-screen TVs. Also if no-one else has clearly taken the opportunity to do so .....
  24. You wanted Software-As-A-Service (Saas) People. You got it. You fools. Biggest con in the IT world since the Millennium bug.
  25. How have you done that then of of interest? Just set it to run if nobody is logged on? Otherwise wouldn't it shutdown every machine in a classroom. e.g. we have an OU per classroom with one computer in some of them. So it would shut them down too surely, if the classroom OUs has been set as a target? I'm just curious.
