That's a catch22 question. If you buy a high spec laptop that is affordable now, will it be affordable in 3, 5 or however many years time. It's all about expectation. We don't buy laptops, but we say the same thing for ipads to our primaries. Yes you have the money to buy 32 ipads now, but remember in 3 years time you will need the money to replace them. A lot of schools forget this scenario.

With big budget cuts, how can any school justify spending over £600 on a laptop!

We have negotiated very good deals for SIMs and ISP for our schools. This is paid centrally. IT support is costed out to cover IT Services wages. We have two 'visiting' IT Technicians. Those costs are relevant to the amount of devices. Mine (Network Manager) and Senior Tech is based on pupil numbers. So we have the three costs split across 8 schools. This works. Thankfully its down to the finance director to sort it all out.

I'm just going to turn all the servers off and go down the pub. That's the safest option, til it all blows over.

I hooked my onto the rear wiper fuse. This isn't always live, and is only live once the ignition is on.

You can do it yourself. It really is cheap as chips. One cigarette adaptor and piggy back fuse. Less than a £10.

I have a blackvue. Can't remember the model as it is around 4 years old. Absolutely superb and small. Hardwired, and fits behind the rear view mirror. Don't even know it's there. It's more expensive, but blackvue are a leading player in this market.
