I think that Office 365 is much more geared towards industry whereas Google apps (for education) is geared towards education. There are lots of extra tools like Classroom, Vault, Groups that you won't get with Microsoft unless you spend a long time learning sharepoint. We did a transition from exchange and it wasn't painful at all. I don't think Office 365 is easier any to manage because all the API for Google apps are open and there are a variety of scripting tools available to do pretty much anything you'd ever need to do - but if you only know powershell then this may not help. There is also a marketplace of integrated apps which work well. Google apps is also good because it allows you to open up your system in the future to things like chromebooks,android and it is easy to bulk download things from Google apps in MS formats if you change your mind.

No direction from SLT, it's just that in the last week I've heard radio interviews with "Jihadi John's" former headteacher, and the HT from the school where four girls disappeared from all denying they were radicalised at school and that "facebook/ twitter were blocked!" I thought it might be prudent to actually put in some measures to prevent the same happening here, as we do with child abuse.

Purely out of interest - what is the justification of keeping documents permanently? A recent discussion here highlighted a potential breach of the data protection act if staff hold personal student details (names, grades, SEND information) in their personal files. We were told that information can only be kept for as long as reasonably necessary and that it needs to be reviewed regularly. I wonder if you have a policy to prevent that and whether it is enforced?

Our SW log only saw the @googledomain.com and not our internal @internaldomain.com, hence SW wouldn't recognise any users. We also couldn't work out how to link the accounts and stuck to RADIUS. which works well on Chromebooks.

I work in IT - so I don't guarantee anything!. suffice to say the devices must log into the smoothwall and there is no direct connection to the internet so if the app website is blocked then we are good. So far everything we've been worried about from child protection is blocked (snapchat,facebook,skype). Smoothwall does a good job of this and we firewall all other ports. Luckily the 3G signal is very poor in our school and 4G is non existent so kids tend to use the wifi by choice. The most difficult is when the app replies on Amazon/Google could services and it is difficult to see what app is calling it. We didn't find the whole experience too difficult and I spend virtually no time clamping down on time wasting apps such as games as I've been able to offload this to the teachers - others may not have this luxury.

We have been doing this for three or four years now. Seems to work rather well. We don't really find many security problems and the biggest difficulty is working with a myriad of systems and you need to make sure your systems are vendor neutral. At last count our breakdown was 300 IOS devices, 175 androids, 80 windows 7/8 and 117 "others" (OSX, chromebooks, XP). Our approach was to segregate the wireless networks into yeargroups - the students log in using their network username and password and this puts them on the correct network. None of these networks talk to the internal network or to each others network. proxy is transparent but the user is identified using the logon that the used to access the network via radius so we can keep track of individuals without having to give them all different settings. SSL interception is the most difficult thing to do (which we don't) for BYOD in my opinion.

We just used firewalled VLANs. With decent cameras (h.264 encoders built in) the bandwidth isn't huge (150KB/s). Disk space is where we need to invest. It would be good to get a baseline understanding of how much bandwidth you are using. Clearly you will be able to do some upgrades on the back of this project (we did!). I couldn't find that sentence in the document. I agree with the sentiment but the fines are imposed by the ICO when adequate checks have not been made. This is what the DFE have done on the behalf of schools. The documentation from the DFE is part of the check that we need to make when going ahead with outsourcing storage to protect ourselves from litigation. The question that Governors and Management need to ask is who they trust more: The advice from the DFE, an army of Google engineers and contract lawyers or the school technician. Personally I'd be happy with Government advice as I can't be 100% sure the next technician we employ could make decisions to ensure things more secure than Google do. Of course your mileage may vary.

Google satisfied the cabinet office who are now using Google apps for education and they also have the OK from the Department of Education for use in schools and they meet all of their checklists. I think if the advice from the Government is that it is ok we can pretty much agree that it isn't just "lemming behaviour"

Copying full documents both ways would use more bandwidth. Our school currently has 2000 staff/students using Google Apps storage (almost, but not entirely exclusively) and typically uses 80Mb/s. A redundant line is more important.

We have obtained a product key and serial number from schools.autodesk.com for the network version but when we try to register it at https://registeronce.autodesk.com to get a LIC file we get the message: Your product cannot be registered in United States. (7) (We are in the UK) Anyone manage to set this up successfully using the LMTOOLS license server utility?
