Matt is not far off. I gave away the camera from end of June and have only just got it back. The recipient has been shooting some great shots in just Auto mode, but i have no reclaimed some spare time and am looking to revisit this subject. Thanks to all of you whom have suggested books (I bought the Collins Complete Coure textbook) and thanks also to you who sent me on the path to tutorial by DVD. I got through chapter 1 of the book and havent managed any of the video tutorials. I have since bought a GoPRo to capture my snowboarding and scuba diving adventures; (see seperate thread) but I still want to learn the basics of the DSLR, so this thread begins a revival.

Once we embark on our BYOD voyage next year, one of the things we want to do is allow students to access Facebook at school, seeing as though they all have smartphones with it in their pockets, and use it at home anyway. Obviously their are pastoral concerns, and it seems there is a web filter from the Netbox Blue company that has a 'SafeChat' component that will intercept all social media interacions both at school and at home (with an agent installed on the device) that allows for some smart monitoring and logging of social media posts/communications/etc. My concern though is this requires a rip and replace of the incumbent web filter / firewall / spam etc, just to get this one feature, whille the other components are all (IMO) inferior to what we have now. So the question is, are there other methods / tools / of doing a similar interception / monitoring of social media, or are we stuck with ditching the current filter/firewall etc just to buy into this feature? Thanks @penfold_99 very intersting to hear your thoughts. We currently have no proper helpdesk so whatever we do will be a complete start from the ground up. How does Zendesk compare licensing wise? From first look it seems its a per-tech/per-month cost? which gets costly when if we have a 5-10 person IT team? Does zendesk have smartphone apps etc?

Kayako looks like it fulfils all our needs. Having a smart device native app looks like a bonus too. for those of you that use Kayako can i ask you some questions please ( @Sylv3r and @unixman_again and any one else not yet here) Have you ever had to contact support? as far as i can see all is listed is a +1 number, do they have a local number for most countries? is there any local support or 24/7 support? How long did you find it took to set up? Did/do your staff find it easy to use? Thanks everyone else for the other suggestions.

We have a send connector on our Exchange server to relay emails which are generated by our MIS. Once a week we send out a newsletter as an attachment (about 700kb) to all 2000 parents. This seems to time out from the MIS and my exchange server is getting the blame. If an email without the attachemnt is sent to all 2000 recipients there isn't any issue. Which logs or diagnostics should I be looking at on Exchange to check whether it is exchange that is causing the problem, or if it is the MIS itself?

I got fed up, and took the easy way out and just left. I was lucky enough to have a spare couple of grand put aside which i used to pay for a plane ticket and the first wee while until i found some work. And to answer your question @witch, I personally am 100x better off. I cant speak for Europe or North America, but there are loads of jobs available here (4 notifications today alone for IT jobs in schools in a 20 mile radius, from low level to director). Salary is way higher here for similar roles, and granted cost of living is a lot higher too, but Im living a much more comfortable life here with the low(for here) salary Im on here compared to to the low salary I was on in the UK.

Im in the market for a new laptop. Im not interested in the tablet / slate fad, but I do like something I can use on the go. Im currently using an Acer 1830, its the perfect size (11") and 8GB RAM and 256G SSD serves me for those componenets. But the i3 and non-virtualiseable CPU lets me down on the road. I have a pretty decent 6 core desktop which does me when Im in the office, but Im after a laptop that is powerful enough to render a 3 minute movie in Premier in less than the current 12 hours, and something I Can fire up a VM or two in the background. But it has to be ~11". Anything tick these boxes? Budget is high.

Thats good to know that 8.1 increases the limit of per-ID devices. We currently have labs of 25 win8 devices, using them as single-user and trying to find a way to manage the apps with a single account is proving troublesome. Might have to upgrade to 8.1 with haste

I'm in the market for a new ticketing system, currently not using one at all. Looking for something that ticks all, or at least the most of these boxes: o Web-based o Usability for teachers and admin staff o Assign tickets to multiple technicians o Calendar – department wide o Compatible with e-mail ie: auto ticket creation as a result of sending an email  Automatic reply to acknowledge request received o Ability to:  categorise jobs  prioritise  check the status of their ticket  add notes to the jobs  filter tickets by technician  remind to users about tickets open  document knowledge and processes What does everyone here use? Paid-for solutions are perfectly acceptable, I'd much prefer a complete product at a price than something free that would take me weeks to configure.

We use group policy to customise the control panel items, the only thing we allow is the Region and Language, so the students can choose different keyboard inputs in the Asian languages class. For windows 7, this is Microsoft.RegionAndLanguage From here Canonical Names of Control Panel Items (Windows) It says 'Windows 7 and above' but in windows 8, there are two separate control panel items now, Region, and Language. My group policy only displays Region, and I cannot get Language to show. Any tips please?

I know theres a long thread about this already, but with winsows 8.1 almost here, is there a way yet to prepare an image that has a whole bunch of windows 8 apps pre-installed that can be available for every user?

The only problem I am finding with Doggcatcher, is once i unplug the audio jack, it continues playing the podcast. I use my phone in the car with the headphone jack, and once i finish my journey it would be good if the playback stopped when the jack was unplugged. For example, the TuneIn app, once you unplug the headphone jack, it will automatically halt playback. Is there a setting ive missed in doggcatcher (free) to enable this functionality or should I upgrade to the paid ver. @Arthur, does your recommendation support this feature?

as the OP of the original 'weight loss' thread, i have been noticeably absent from both that, and this new one. I started the original thread when I realised I had a problem with my weight that needed fixed, but it has taken until now for me to actually do someting about it. I tried a weightloss hypnosis program, knowing that my mind was susceptible to change after reading a book about not smoking and never sminging since... It just made me more aware of what i was eating, and when i should be excersising, and i think it has been effective. I will post back here in a few months if it has had an effect. I am 95KG just now.

I have about 200 MacOS devices, and a growing number of ipads. I just insist on a standards based network that doesnt require me to make protocol and port exceptions to make specific devices or applications work.

Never imagined the day i would be getting up before the sun, just so i could try to do a timelapse sunrise..., I had it on a 60 sec interval which made it pretty crappy; at 24 fps it was over in 3 seconds.... I will need to try again with better settings. As an aside, a school of cafish swam through me this week, which was pretty awesome.

I do definatlely agree with uniforms, but they should be affordable and non-exclusive. The only expensive part of my uniform when I was at school was the blazer, and that was because I was at a private school. Every other part was nondescript- black shoes, black trousers, shirt, and school tie (cheap) At recent schools where Ive worked, and theres been a non-uniform day, ive found it hard to differentiate between students, student teachers, and teachers.

I wouldnt put a single Airplay device on my network.
