Saw a conference Richard Branson gave about 3 months ago, and he wasn't even there, it was all holographic, he was walking down the middle of aisles, talking to people, wondering around the whole conference centre, all while being projected from multiple ceiling mounted projectors. Holographic technology is highly-advanced and very upto date, the reason we don't know too much about it, is the cost to run it all.

Agreed, why do you have to use CLI to not be a Windows copy cat. I prefer GUI, but thats my opinion, its still different, I have to say I spend around 60-75% of my time in a terminal, I just like the visual aspect most of the time. After all, why would Gnome, XFCE, KDE, E16/17, Fluxbox etc be written if it weren't for people wanting GUI Support. Servers, that are specific. Fileservers, Webservers, with a single purpose I can see the use of CLI. Than again... I'd like the OP to seriously think about what he said, what % of home linux users use CLI? 1-2%? at most on non-primary machines.

Sure have, man folders read only, as was out last profile, and all permissions are exact as the old profile, however the old profile works multiple times, this one only seems to work for a single account. Students, read, write etc, special permissions unticked, as a bonus added "Everyone" with read, write, no special permissions.

Hi All, Seem to have run into a massive hurdle at the moment. We are currently creating new Staff, and Student profiles, we started with students, copied an exisiting one with the correct groupings etc, added administrative rights, and set the machine up, dat was created, quite chunky, and logged on fine, got the dat off, renamed man and began redirects via registry, however the following now happens: Student User Created: 1 New student 2 created, profile set to the new man saved in profile directory, however whenever logging in, the user does not get anything from the profile, it seems to copy everything down to local machine and do nothing, not a thing. New student 3 created, same thing happens, profile is not working. Changing student 1 to the man profile, logging in and VOILA! Works perfectly as expected. Whats going wrong, how could I troubleshoot the problem, and are there any real easy things I'm doing wrong? Many Thanks!

Fantastically useless, if It weren't for its ability to lock the desktop/system and provide menus for students/staff we'd no sooner spit on it and kick it out the door. If its not incompatiability with Sophos, its Mcafee, (Package Creater fails as Mcafee locks all its *.log files) it's the lack of clear direction, menus in the wrong place, all users menus being duplicated, wrong user folder redirection, slowness when logging on due to god knows what, added that every update thus far has cleared all policies and profiles and we have to start it all again. Perfect for locking, title bar checks, unwanted programs, IE logging, screen capturing, remote shutdown/restart, messaging etc.

Three of us in IT, 2 in at the moment. Administration, Marketting, Bursary, Foundation accounts for another 16 people. Maintainance and Groundstaff account for 11 people + 6 Gap Students for general help. Add General staff in, your looking at around 38 people still in school. I doubt there will be a point where anyone is alone in the school. Just noted the user guide, and indeed it has limited options regarding group bypass and denying access, however as stated above, you can manually add these features, and they are thoroughly documented. Or give it time to mature a bit more, new features and modules for Squid are being requested and more than likely implemented over time. Add-on: Squid Module Filter Control Request

As it runs Squid the above is possible, it may not have a front-end for unfiltering certain groups, but its only a simple ACL bypass you require in either dansguardian.conf or squid.conf. Saying that, its not 100% foolproof, there are limitations, and you may have to get your hands dirty for it too work, but not by much saying that.

It is, its perfect for that it is, its complete for want of another word, if it weren't for already having a Debian Etch Squid Proxy server and it working, configured and going. I'd sooner move over. Allows alot more control, and allows a better understanding, as there are no long hours reading guides, tutorials or man pages.

Unless your macs are kerberized into your Windows domain, you'll more than likely be prompted for credentials, added the fact depending on MAC OS, ntlm_auth is known to be broken within the operating system, so even single signon setups fail to work, you'll be prompted for credentials all the time. Same with Sarafi for Windows, won't bypass single signon, as at present NTLM is broken. If you don't want to authenticate MAC pc's you could always great a passthrough ACL for that network and allow full access. Make sure you backup your squid.conf file, as a newer version will more than likely overwrite, and some features may not be available, its always handy when restarting the new squid to start it rebuilding any cache you have available. Dansguardian for filtering as well, its a learning curve, but it does what it does, smoothwall have incorporated it into their commercial product. Client > Dansguardian > Squid > Internet (Squid on local, so even with macs on passthrough, they still get filtered)

As stated above, the more cores the merrier, regards hard-drives, something SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) is what you should got for. Our Facility, ePortal server has SAS 15k RPM drives, and performs faultlessly, specially with everyone writing, reading to the server!
