Hi, Our print contract is up for renewal next year, so I've started looking at printing reports to see if there's any way we can rationalize, especially to reduce the number of big MFDs. There are a couple of target areas with pretty low printing and copying requirements, but (oddly) they're some of the highest users for scan-to-email. So now I'm thinking about some sort of scan-to-email station that would link to papercut the same way the scan function works on the MFDs. Does anyone know if such a thing exists? Bit of a long shot, I know. But I thought I'd ask. Thanks!

Anyone been watching the new series of The Boys. Somehow I wound up watching episodes 2 and 3 the wrong way around, but thoroughly enjoying it so far. Well no, and it's not going to stop me getting one. But that's not the point. It still feels weird upgrading to something with a smaller number.

We're not quite that elaborate and have more of an emphasis on getting things as close to "the before times" as we can, but have bubbled year groups with their own entrances and staggered lesson changeover (otherwise the timetable stays as normal). Outside of lesson/tutor time the students have to return to their "bubble holding area" and pre-ordered school meals (hot or cold) will be delivered to bubble at break/lunch (they can even order a break time snack!). And we still have the super elaborate one-way system that went in at Easter. Staff all get scanned by the thermal camera on the way in, and we have sanitizer stations at the entrance to each building and by the copiers/water fountains/etc, and each classroom has a cleaner spray and stack of paper towels to clean the desks at the start of each lesson. The site team were talking about getting "foggers" to go through each classroom at the end of the day. No requirement for face masks (yet), but the teachers get face shields and all the teacher desks have perspex barriers. ...and hopefully by Monday they'll have worked out where all the support staff will be sitting.

It weirds me out a bit that the 3080 has less ram than my 1080ti. (I know it's like a billion times faster, but it still seems wrong)

Across the 4 schools I've worked in, none have ever presented that kind of message, and before your post hadn't considered that I would need to maintain union membership after I stopped working/left education. I'm not trying to be contrarian, but where would this message come from that people who are only peripherally aware of unions would be looking? I think it's pretty easy for people just starting out as support staff to not get anything more on unions than "they are a thing that exists", and from the outside you don't really see what they do/can offer beyond strikes and pay rises (that you benefit from even if you aren't a member). Combine that with some level of negativity around "unions" from the recent rail strikes and general Thatcherisum (probably less so now) and that, for people just starting out, it can seem like another (comparatively large) chunk of their salary, when it's not that big to start with and they're already loosing a good chunk to NI, pensions, and student loan. When things are ticking alone fine, it doesn't cross peoples minds and unless something happens or someone sits you down and says what mikeprice did, you're not going to suddenly start thinking about it. I'm in no way saying people shouldn't join up, but I can see why they might not have.

We've got it installed across the site so we can access computers remotely. Set so connecting requires a password.

It looks like the ACR1281U supports keyboard emulation, in which case you should be able to scan the mifair cards and have it kick out a plane text string into notepad/excel/etc.

At work I've got a HP wireless mouse and keyboard set (mostly for the media keys) and an old Razer Goliathus mouse mat. At one point (back we were hot-desking a bit) I used the Zalman FG1000 for a bit, but mostly just to freak people out. At home I've got a Corsair M65 pro mouse and Corsair K70 RGB red keyboard plus a random keyboard recommended by a friend (that I can't remember the name of) that's super comfortable for typing, with a corsair "desk mat". Also have a downstairs office set up with cast-off peripherals (it's currently rocking a razer something-or-another mouse and the lycosa keyboard). Both work and home have the PUK wrist rest (originally just because the right cuff of all my jumpers wore out).

In West Sussex, we're back on the 3rd (because of that grand old tradition of starting the autumn term midweek) with double inset days, so the kids won't be in until the 7th.

My understanding support wise (here at least), is that we can go into classrooms to fix things as long as we maintain 2m (or 1m+) distancing from the teacher and the students and all the rooms have surface cleaner that we can use to wipe down any kit we need to touch. (the techs also have all-in-one mouse and keyboard devices they can use in classrooms rather than touching the teachers kit.) I think I mentioned in an earlier post that we're hunting around for extra office space so people can maintain social distancing. @twizz maybe there's a chance you or some of your team could be based somewhere else?

Have you tried using the "Card/ Identity Numbers" option rather than the "Card ID PIN" in Papercut, these fields accept alphanumeric codes.

Personally, I'd start by hunting through the server shares and netlogon for a WOL script. It might help narrow things down. (I find these things normally wind up on the PDC)

You've checked the Bios? It seems unlikely but the BSOD might have reset it/changed something so it's PXE isn't enabled anymore.

At the moment I'm leaning toward "no", but that could change as we get closer. (voted will decide later). Isn't the Nightingale going to impact on the available space? (even if it's on "standby")

We've been told we (as support staff) can wear masks if we want, although the implication is still they would rather we didn't. It's been bandied around that staff will be issued with face shields to for close-up work and we're installing perspex barriers around the teachers workstations. As I understand it (and based on the Teams v Zoom argument), being able to see students' faces and for students to be able to see yours is crucial for teaching. Hence no masks in schools.

Then why are we spending all this money on surface cleaner and hand sanitizer? And to answer the original question, upon entering their new classroom students will be given a disposable cleaning cloth to wipe down their workstation.

We've been told that all staff must be on site, and there won't be "any tolerance" for home working or shift patterns. They're talking about needing all the support staff to help with crowd control, or do all the last minute copying for the teachers (as they can't use assembly time for it now). The main take-away was that we will have to be flexible and we'll probably be working way out of our job specs on some things. Supposedly we can have 2 people per IT office within the guidelines which covers us all, but there are other teams who will have the problem of not being able to "fit" everyone in one office within regulations (especially internal offices) so we're hunting down other locations that can be used as office space (mostly meeting and training rooms, but only because the store cupboards doesn't have a network points.) But as with all this stuff, it keeps changing. So who knows what's going to actually happen in September.

For us September 1st is still in the summer holidays. So we'll be doing mad, last minute office moves. But the plans for the start of term couldn't be simpler. All the students will be back in school full time and "everything will be fine".
