I've gone from a nearly 30 down to about 7 now. When it was rolled out it did work initially and worked, for the most part, quite well reusing old machines. We then hit several issues with our RDS server that I have never really resolved. Internet Proxy settings failed to deploy, although that became less of an issue towards the end but still exists. Our server initially fell over a few times and then was hit with long boot up times due to WMI issues. A couple of GPO changes to disable RSOP on the server fixed the WMI problem. To try and reduce the likelyhood of the Proxy GPO failing the server does a scheduled nightly reboot which also corrects the issue if no one reports it occuring during the day. The few that I have got scattered out still work perfectly well and people are happy with them so I may in the future try to roll it back out, but would probably be more inclined to try and look at VDI rather then RDS. I've never worked out why we hit the two big issues above, but it's a shame because I thought it was a great idea at saving us a bit of cash in the long run. They persisted even after reinstalling the server from scratch and rebuilding all the GPO's being applied to it. Edit: On the other hand, the other terminal server which I use for staff remote access works brilliantly and has been running for over a year without any issues... (touch wood)

I must confess I've not actually done it so can't say. I've read something else since which suggests that the ESM should be installed on the laptop which is going to be taken off site (but then that would become a pain). I'm not sure whether you can log in as an admin to Administrator and download the test to the client in advance or not, your best bet would really be to give Edexcel a call. I've just uninstalled our ESM server so can't take a proper look I'm afraid.

I think that will be the only way to do it. We'd not want to share everything from our SIMS calendar. Ours is in a pretty poor state to be fair and it does have quite a few things on which Parent's don't need to/shouldn't see.

Sophos provide a command line install string which you can use, I've added this to the end of my image deployment as a custom action and it works a treat.

Support Center Home and search for universal print driver brings up all sorts of results, no idea if you'd find the version your after though...

Have you run the Discover Deployment again? Discover doesn't automatically get deployed to a workstation like SIMS/FMS so unless you Redeploy it won't get installed.

Can your domain administrator log in to the SQL server using the SQL Management Studio or does it recieve access denied too? You could also check and open the Solus 3 Deployment Server UI Connection String Editor (which just rolls off the tounge) and make sure that the username/password in the SQL Authentication box are correct (unless you are using Trusted Authentication in which case I think the box should be unticked).

I meant to reply to this but forgot. It's possible with Wordpress, I've just setup an internal webserver to do exactly this. I set up multiple blogs and made each one into a multisite blog which may not be the most efficient, but met the needs of what we wanted to do. Students sign up for their own blog (restricted to the school email domain), so they are responsible for maintaining their own account. Teacher is set up as Superadmin on the blog site they manage for their class so they can access any sites that they need to should anything bad happen. There is also a nifty little plugin called "Multi-Site Site List Shortcode" - installing this and enabling it on the main site blog allows you to create a page with the shortcode [site-list] and then any sites created within the blog automatically get added to the page.

I was going to ask this also. It's all very focussed on LA's which is a very different scenario from individual schools/academies/trusts. I suppose really I should know, but then I do my own little procurements and expect finance/governors to keep me right.

I thought it was either going to change or had been changed in the autumn upgrade? I can't find the details now. In the Timeline Configuration (Routines - Home page - Home Page Timeline Configuration) there is a tick box for Covered Lessons/NCC's which I'm guessing might be ticked and you want it unticked on your system? Our's is ticked, but we don't use Cover within SIMS so it makes no difference to our setup.

I left it up to staff to decide, the only part I played in it was offering. If they grumble about an extra £10 (for roundings sake) and paying a total of £20 for a £60/£100 product that's up to them. I have a feeling, but can't remember for definite, that the normal Volume Licencing media works for the licence code.

Can I ask a couple of, probably, stupid questions? 1. On my Android version of the App, clicking on About Me/School Details gives me No Information, this may be because there is ano information or the school isn't using this part of School Gateway - is that because these are only part of the Online Reporting part (or because I am registered as a member of Staff rather then a parent)? If not, how can we get it so that details appear on the School Details part? 2. Clicking on Messages, under the school name it has a reply sat there which I sent when we were testing the App before promoting it. Tapping on the school name doesn't bring up the old reply - is this because it was in the Old app and not been brought across or something else? Edit: Just noticed on the School Gateway webpage, your Find Out More link doesn't actually go anywhere either....

I do this on our RDS servers because otherwise they eventually just fall over completely for some reason, never got an answer as to why or the root cause of it (there is still another big issue on one of ours which I've not discovered after almost 3 years).

We're not really close enough unfortunately. I'm resigned to the fact that we are going to be with OCL for a while longer, having said that however I've just looked at the connecting cumbria site and our exchange upgrade date has been brought forward to by the end of 2014 instead of end of 2015 now so that is looking more promising...

We are currently on a 100meg CLEO installed fiber. Dropping to a 50meg link on a bt installed connection (even provided by someone like Schools Broadband) would still cost us around £5k more then we are currently paying to OCL. There is only one possibility of matching the OCL price currently and it's dependant on a number of different parties to work making it difficult. Other companies such as Virgin Media when I've gone through various suppliers I've got have come back and refused to quote because there is no access point close enough for them to make it viable. Problems of being in such a rural area.

From the recommendations I've read, Synthetic Full backups are fine, but as you mention if a corruption/problems rolls it's self into the backup then the synthetic will keep that defect within it - the last recommendation I saw on the Veeam forum was every 1 - 3 months setup the job to automatically perform an Active Full backup to ensure that a fresh, full backup is taken without faults (But I manually run it every so often to manage the space as I haven't got enough currently like you). To be honest, this wasn't explained to me at the time and for nearly a year we were running Synthetic backups until I started to question why one backup group was so large when I'd removed a load of VM's out of it. Turned out it was because our setup was set not to remove VM's nolonger backed up until an Active Full was performed.

I would love to be able to take this stance, however I can't justify £5k-£10k a year more for an equivelent connection which is all that is stopping me at the moment....

If you need to lease then it needs to be an Operating Lease as far as I'm aware (just keep that in mind). Various companies around dedicated to leasing such as Syscap and CHG Meridian (and we have a current lease with De Lage Landen), but probably also worth asking your supplier as they may do an inhouse lease offering if they are big enough, or put you in touch with a partner they use. The only other thing I have to say is that our 2nd lease payment with one company, they had added insurance on top of the payment which we had to get removed and refunded, so just try to keep an eye on the payments and make sure they are what you are expecting if/when you do take a lease out.

We were looking at this a couple of years ago but didn't pursue it. Couple of things came out of the research: There is a company out there that offers them, but I can't remember the name and don't think I have it wrote down Manufacturers such as Integral were quite interested in the idea behind it when contacted through our supplier In the end we decided if we were going to do it, it was actually cheaper for us to buy USB drives in cases and strip the cases off them then it was to buy the uncased sticks themselves. Don't know whether that helps?

I really liked the look of Firefly, couldn't believe the cost of it though. I was also pretty surprised that the prices were the same regardless of whether it's self hosted or cloud hosted. If I was going to go with it, I'd have gone self-hosted for the single sign-on side of things.

I want to do tablety stuff with it? To be honest, I find that rather then going and using my computer at home I'll pull out my phone and check something on that, general web browsing, the odd game, facebook etc. While my Nexus 4 is fine for that, it does have the obvious knock on effect on the battery plus it is a smaller screen. Something slightly bigger to do these, but something still portable is what I'm after hence knocking the 10" idea on the head a bit. Plus the Vodafone/Verizon deal recently gave me a little bit of cash I wasn't expecting (wish I'd had a lot more of those shares now) so it's starting to burn a little bit of a hole in my pocket.
