Meeting digital and technology standards in schools and colleges
Rackenford replied to Jaymate's topic in Hardware
One of the rural primary schools I am working at gets 2Mbps down on a good day, with the wind blowing in the right direction. I have just emailed RM/SWGfL with this statement. And they will inform me, "they can do it, for £20k." So I will go to the school, with its 80-90 children and inform them to fire a teacher so I can fund their broadband. And then I will start on the CAT6, switches and access points. Oh dear, the goes another teacher. -
When I went into the BIOS, I found 2 options for Network Boot, so I queued them up as the first 2 boot options. Plugged in my USB to Ethernet adapter and, first one failed but, second one worked and I was able to PXE boot and install W10Edu. I am going to try installing the drivers next. I PM'ed Dawn yesterday about drivers but, have not heard anything. Let me know how you get on with BIOS and I will send you a photo if you need it. Good luck.

Dear World I have a situation with pupils logging on to laptops in a primary and the Google EU GDPR Acceptance of search agreement type-thing. Every time the children use Google to search the web they are persisted to agree to the ruling powers that be. I am running W10 2004 and have binned roaming profiles. Is there any way in the Google GPO's or any other way whereby I can stop this happening every time? Thanking you all for any assistance in this matter and wishing you all an isolated Christmas. Covid is not just for Christmas........... Feliz Navidad

I have just installed a piece of software in an ICT suite called Silhouette Studio. Works fine when I am logged in as admin but, when logged in as a user, it pops up with: 'Failed to locate Framework DLL'. I have changed the permissions on the Silhouette Studio folders for users but, no joy. Environment: Windows 7, Server 2008, Group Policy restrictions for pupils.

Hey Chuckster Appreciate the response. Sooo, imagine you are holding a small child by the hand and leading the way. Is all what you are saying in GP? There are a lot of policies here and some seem to have been created with very little imagination to what the do. Is there a way I can search for a change in folder redirection or do I just need to trawl through. Also, how do I redirect the shortcuts to the local drive? Thank you sir!

When using my laptop on domain, everything is tickety-boo. Go home and log in and no desktop background, no shortcuts working on taskbar or on Start Menu. And MS Outlook will not open. Any ideas on what I have wrong with roaming profiles? All laptops are the same so it is not a CSC issue (I think). Windows XP has none of these issues. Only my W7 machines. As I am entirely phasing out XP, I need a solution. Any ideas? Anyone? Did not set up this domain environment but, Folder redirection and roaming profiles look in place. Thanks in advance.

I am about to undertake my first deployment of 25 desktops from XP to W7. Rather than using the full Microsoft deployment software I have an idea and wanted to enquire as to viability. Tried to ask Microsoft but, halted at the, 'Give me your credit card details'. I have a Volume Licence and was thinking if i built one machine with all the added other 3rd party software my school requires as default, i could take an image (gimagex) of that PC and deploy on all the other ones. (They are all Optiplex 320's). I could do this prior to joining to domain so i could individually change the computer name and then just join to domain. This is my first ever attempt at this and i appreciate that there may be better ways of doing this but, i have a week window and this seemed the fastest to achieve. I do not have the time to learn AIK/WDS etc. Any guidance would be gratefully received. Many thanks

This is my Event log. Does this offer anything else to consider. Looks like the Queue folder has an issue but, the mail.que inside it is in a normal state. What does this mean? Also, if my mail flow stops and i restart the server, it picks up again. Surely this would not change the disk space. I am something of a newbie to servers, domains etc. However, i am in a jam with regarding to the teachers using their laptops at home. Servers are running 2008 and laptops are Windows 7. The laptops have roaming profiles and redirected folders. When the teachers are using at home, none of the shortcuts on the taskbar work and when clicking on Documents in the Start menu, nothing happens. However, if you click on your Username at the top of the start menu, it does take you to your My Documents. Any shortcuts pinned to the start menu also fail to be recognised. In fact, when clicking on any pinned shortcuts, Windows informs they are no longer available and would you like to remove? Bonkers. Could really do with some guidance on this. (Ever feel like you have bitten off more than you can chew?) Many thanks Steve

Windows 7 - Roaming Profiles - Offline and nothing works
Rackenford replied to Rackenford's topic in Windows 7
Not sure if anyone else here has any thoughts for this. I performed the above and diddly. Still have the same problems. Very odd. Still no solution. Do i ditch roaming profiles? Are there any known issues with Offline Files? Have other people starting to breath down my neck and this has raised the need for this.- 2 replies

Hellooooo! Have come across a problem which has me confused (not a difficult occurrence to be fair). Please understand that my knowledge of Servers is somewhat limited and have adopted this, and have never built a server. 1) I have a Linux Mailserver feeding into an Exchange 2010 Server. 2) Recently i started having mail flow issues and they would hold on the Linux server and not be delivered. I dug up a variety of errors and have arrived at the conclusion that i have an 'Exchange Back Pressure' issue which is, based on the event logs, due to insufficient disk space. However, the partition where my Exchange is installed has 2.5GB of space. 3) There appears lots of information about what the causes of 'Back Pressure' are but, nothing very definitive on how to resolve it. Do i need to buy Easeus and resize my partitions? Even when their appears to be space available. One thing i have discovered is that after a restart of the server, i buy myself about 3-4 days where everything works fine again. Any help or advice on this would be excellent. Thanks in advance.

Just to pop up a new note but, i am still have no resolution to this. Restarting the Exchange Server every 3-4 days is sorting it but.................

I know very little about Linux. I have recently started at a school that has a Linux server which manages external mail coming in. I have a Webmin console that I have login details for and i can see a mail queue of external mail building up. This happened 1 week ago and i rebooted the Linux server and they all delivered. Now it has happened again and the reboot has done nothing. If i click on the Mail Queue i am informed (lots of times): host xx.xxx.xx.x said: 452 4.3.1 Insufficient System resources (in reply to MAIL FROM command) If i click on the System Logs and look in the mail.err log, i have (lots of times): SVR04 MailScanner[XXXXX]: File checker failed with real error: Insecure dependency in exec while running with -T switch at /usr/share/MailScanner/ /MailScanner/SweepOther.pm line 374 That is my extent of Linux. If anyone could offer any guidance, i would be eternally grateful as i have no external email coming in. Look forward to hearing from anyone.

Opening Bluesy Slavo "I woke up this morning, and my computer don't work no mores! I said, i woke up this morning, and my computer don't work no mores! I was working with Windows, when i should have been listening to Doors!" Alright, poor effort but, it is on the fly!! So, back to my problem. Facts: Windows Server 2008 R2 Windows 7 I login to my PC when at school and on the network and booyah!! Everything is dreamy. I go home and login and all my shortcuts on my taskbar do not work and happily asks me if i want to remove them. My Documents is not there. Just does nothing. My Start Menu pinned items do the same as the taskbar items. As far as i am aware, CSC is on. Anyone got any ideas? Muchos Gracias.

Firstly, to be able to access the Camera views and interface from any PC in the LAN. Secondly, to allow remote access. One of the features offered is accessing via a smartphone. This particular CCTV management box is going to be in a pretty tucked away area so general monitor use is not an easy option.

Thank you John. I have the A Record and have called it "cctv". The third party controllers of the firewall and made the appropriate internal and external DNS adjustments so just gotta wait for the DNS changes to catch up. Now all i have to sort out some dumb ActiveX plug-in issue and we will be away. Thanks John. Really, really appreciate your advice. Is there a way to increase your Edugeek rating? God Amongst Men!
