1. Thanks for all the recommendations. I'm following them up now.
 2. Would anyone like to give an indication of their costs for School Asset Manager, School Audit or Parago? We're a small special school so budgets are tight. I'd like to know if it's a non-starter before I spend any more time on it.
 3. We have a procedure in place for such eventualities. We decided against the computer based alert as it was too patchy. Not every area has someone watching the screen and people need to know NOW! The school bell is used, then access throughout the school is restricted with all doors locked, staff and students go in to designated safe areas and only come out when they hear a pre-arranged code word.
 4. You can set this up in O365. Create a shared resource mail box for each room. When people fill in a meeting request in their diary include the room in the location field. You can set permission so only certain people can book while others can view. Neat features liike auto schedule can also come in to play where it will check everyone's diary and suggest the first time that all attendees and the room are free. You can also view the calendar for a shared resource, so you'll effectively get a time table for each room.
 5. I still think this is happening between Chair and Keyboard. Your test machine, is it in your office or out in the wild? Have you grabbed a second monitor for your computer and set it up to see if it happens to that one too? Do you have any it's never happened on? What happens if you swap it for one that is affected. OK you can't downgrade the whole estate to Win 7. but how about one computer for diagnostic reasons? It really sounds like someone's pressing WIN+P instead of Alt-p to me though.
 6. I want to run a scheduled report monthly, possibly weekly. The idea is run a report with all high severity violations which can be sent to a select group of people responsible for e-safety. I can see how to schedule it to run on the specific date, set up a custom report and you get the "Same Day" option. But I want to schedule a report to run on the last day of the month, or on a Friday and report on the whole of the previous month or week. I would also like to have impero email the report to the e-safety group. From what I can tell Impero can't do this. If I export the report as a CSV I lose the screen shots. So failing that, can I somehow Publish the report in Impero to the e-safety group for them to view when they log on? This one is quite important. I've set up the groups of workstations so that the e-safety group and other staff cannot see certain workstations. They don't have access to "entire Network". These workstations belong to SLT and there is a real risk that people viewing the violations would see confidential information. However, when you run a report and leave the group blank it reports on the entire network even on computers that the person running the report has no access to. This is a serious cause for concern.
 7. Try making a boot disk with just the drivers for that particular model computer on it. Then create the disk as a file collection. It should but it in \\Servername\Bootdisks by default. Then in WDS create a new boot image browsing to the boot disk you just made. Call the boot image something obvious like "Toshiba C50 - Windows 7 SP1 PE 3.1 (X86)". When you then PXE boot from the network you'll get the option to use the correct boot image along with the right drivers. Hope this helps.
 8. Rx is shorthand for Receiving in the same way that Tx is shorthand for Transmitting. So the switch is getting errors on the data it's receiving from the device. Try a different device to eliminate the camera. Swap out the patch cables and test. Try a different port. If all that fails test the cable run with a fluke or similar.
 9. If you are on OVS-ES or EES you pay by FTE as you pointed out. You Should submit your FTE each year if it alters in anyway. Irrespective of the length of contract you are on. If your FTE increases you need to pay more to stay licenced. If your FTE goes down then you can reduce your costs. However MS need notice of this you'll have to email them in advance. From what I remember you need to mail them 60 days before the anniversary of the contract. Edit: The notice period appears to be for the three year contracts. If you are on an annual contract you just need to give them the new FTE count with your annual order. From MS EES FAQ; What if my FTE faculty and staff or FTE student count changes during my licensed period? For on-premises desktop and CAL products or Student Option desktop and CAL products you have licensed organization-wide, if your faculty and staff or student FTE count changes during the course of your licensed period, all users remain licensed at no additional charge. Include your new FTE count when you submit your next annual order.
 10. That's the trick! Those hinge covers looked like part of the bezel.
 11. The bezel unclips without screws. You can usually just lift it away at that point. But there isn't enough clearance between the hinges and the case to remove it. It looks like I'll have to split the case to get at the hinges. I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that.
 12. If it's insured by the school it's school equipment. And there fore the school should manage the asset. If it's a school asset then the Head Teacher is ultimately responsible for how it's used. Email the member of SLT pointing out that if the school are managing it, which could be implied from offering technical support then the school also has a duty of care regarding safeguarding. CC in the person responsible for safeguarding outlining your concerns listing any measures you can put in place. Then be very clear that you will follow their instructions once they have made it clear by email.
 13. I need to replace the screen in one of these and the bezel doesn't seem to come off in the same way as other Toshibas. I was wondering if anyone has a service Manual for one or knows of a Teardown video that includes getting the screen out. I've trawled Youtube Vimeo etc but no luck. First time Youtube has let me down...
 14. Pretty similar to those above, All Staff All Students Teaching Staff Non Teaching Staff SLT Year Groups Departments
 15. The brightness and colour on a printer will never match what is on screen. No more than a projector will match a monitor. The best you can hope for is an approximation. The way they produce the image differs too much. The screens are effectively black (Absence of light so even IWB are considered black) and colour is made up by adding RGB to give the correct colours. But these are optically active and emit light. Paper is white and the colours are actually filters for reflected light and that why they use CYMK and paper is optically passive. Paper won't ever be as bright as a monitor as it doesn't emit light. To demonstrate the point turn the lights off, which can you see better? By the same token you very rarely get anywhere near a colour match between Monitor and Projector. The monitor can provide a Brilliant Pure White as a base for all it's colours. The projector can only ever be as White as the Whiteboard and they are only ever light grey at best.
 16. R-click on the desktop and go to Screen Resolution to access the Duplicate/Extended Display Settings. If you have four displays listed click on Identify to see which ones of the four you actually have and disable the remaining ones in Device Manager. I've never seen this happen before. Usually it doesn't pick up the video output unless there is a display actually attached. I assume you have multiple Graphics cards. It sounds like it's giving you a separate display for each output (VGA, DVI, DP, HDMI). Most odd. It's worth updating your drivers too. One more thing, why are you still on XP? Irrespective of how well it still works it now unsupported and must be seen as a risk to the network. Should your network become compromised there will be a lot of shaking of heads and tutting.... "Oh well... XP... Unsupported... Vulnerable... What else has he let slide...". Do yourself a favour, put it in writing to your manager that you consider XP a risk and it needs replacing as you cannot consider it secure. Even if nothing else happens you can consider the buck well and truly passed. You could also play the Unsupported card and say that's why it's causing issues and needs to be replaced.
 17. Buyers may lose the right to reject goods if they have “accepted” them. Acceptance may be intimated to if the buyer keeps the goods for more than a “reasonable period of time”. You really should have checked. Business users still have protection. See this for an idea.
 18. What happens if you log on as your system admin but run the software as a teacher user? This will indicate if it's a permissions issue. You can always run Process monitor (Sysinternals) to see if there anything denied access. I don't know Cubase so I'm not sure how the licences are granted. Does one computer act as a licence server or are activated once online? Are the licences per computer or are they per-seat and allocated in real time? I suspect they are per seat and allocated in real time otherwise once you've activated the software it should stay activated. Check that your users logging off correctly and thus releasing the licence.
 19. Are you using the full email address to log in with?
 20. O365 admin, Exchange, Recipients, Groups. Edit the all Staff Group, Go to Delivery Management Remove all groups apart from All Staff so only Staff can send to the Distribution Group. I've seen it where only certain Authorised Staff can send to all staff. You'd need to set up a group specifically for that. You can add individuals but that's messy...
 21. Found this in the RM KL.

Microsoft Office licensing types

There are several types of licensing schemes for Microsoft® software: Schools/Campus Agreement (typically a whole school/always up to date, annual licence) RM Select MVL Station Licences (special RM Microsoft Volume Licence, eg for use on Connect stations). The Product Key is embedded in the software and is not available to the user. Schools own Select Plus (agreement with RM and MS - perpetual licence) Microsoft Open Licences (MOL) (minimum of five licences of any type - perpetual) Full Boxed Product (academic/student, full licence, includes install CD/DVD) For the terms associated with each of these, please download the Decision Tree flowchart at the end of this article.

Microsoft Office as pre-installed by RM

When configuring systems using the RM Online Configurator, you can ask for Microsoft Office® to be pre-installed. It is important to realise that these options do not include a licence. You will need to ensure you are covered by one of the licences mentioned in the section above. An RM Select Station Licence can be used for pre-installed Office systems (except Office 2010) or Community Connect® Office packages only. Please note: RM cannot disclose the RM Select Product Activation Keys. This means that if you lose the original hard disk contents (e.g. replace the Windows® operating system or reformat the hard disk or uninstall Office), and then later re-install Office (from media you have obtained yourself), you will not be able to activate it as you will have no Product Key. For this reason, this licence is only suitable for establishments where RM provides a pre-installation package which includes the Product Key embedded in the tailor-made package. If you buy RM computers with Office pre-installed and also RM Select Station Licences, you will not be able to activate the software as RM cannot disclose the RM Select Product Key. This licence does not include media and media should not be required as you will not have a Product Key anyway. A Microsoft Open Licence (MOL) is the recommended licence for systems pre-installed by RM with Microsoft Office. It is for establishments that purchase five or more systems (or already hold some MOL licences) and require the Product Key so that they can re-install Office in the event that the hard disk is re-formatted or has been re-installed. This licence does not include media, which must be purchased separately, if required. For Office 2010 you must have a product key in order to activate the RM pre-installed software. If you only require a few systems and have not previously purchased any Microsoft Open Licences in the last two years, you will need to buy a Full Boxed Product.

Special note about Microsoft Office 2010 pre-installed on RM systems

Like most Microsoft Office products, Microsoft Office 2010 requires a Product Key, however it also needs to be activated via the Internet. RM pre-installations of Microsoft Office 2010 do not include an embedded Product Key and are not activated when you receive them. When you receive an RM computer pre-installed with Microsoft Office 2010, you will need to enter in your own MOL Product Key and then activate Microsoft Office 2010 using an Internet connection (or a KMS server, if you have one already set up on your network). If you request Microsoft Office 2010 to be pre-installed by RM you will need to purchase a MOL or other suitable licence as listed above which has a Product Key included. Office 2010 pre-installed RM systems should not be licensed using an RM Select MVL licence as the RM Select MVL licence does not include a Product Key and Office 2010 requires the end user to manually type in a Product Key in order to activate it.

22. How you depreciate the projectors? 5 years is reasonable for most items. So after 5 years and 5 days, replace it. It's paid for itself. Any longer and it's a bonus. What would you do if any other major component (PSU, Cuitcuit board etc) failed out side warranty in any make of projector?
 23. Can't say I've seen this. At first I thought you might have switched De-Dup on but that would show on the original drive and that wouldn't make that much difference either. Where exactly are you reading the sizes from? Do you have screen shots?
 24. If you bought RM SELECT licences then they won't release the keys. They sell Select licences supposedly cheaper, but it's they only way they seem to be able to compete. When the product activates it's uses RM's MAK key and Microsoft bill them for the activations. This is why they only apply to CC4 computers that activate automatically and to RM Built Servers where they are built by RM engineers who activate it for you. If you build a vanilla computer you cannot apply the RM Select licence. Yes, you need to buy the licences again. If they release the keys then anyone could activate software at RM's Expense. The moral of the story is when you are comparing prices make sure it's like for like. RM do sell regular licences if you really really push them. Thankfully OVS-ES/EES is making all this a moot point anyway. Most schools are choosing a subscription service for their licences which don't have the same limitations.
 25. Definately do two docuemnts, the full plan and an Executive overview that summarises the full plan. Start with the requirements, talk to the staff, google forms could be your friend and gather as many ideas as you can. In there you will find the justification for the projects you know you need. Ask questions like How would the computers going off in the middle of a lesson affect teaching and learning. What's more important, the latest gadgets or a system that just works... From that produce a list of VITAL, thing that the network MUST do. The School cannot function without the network doing these points, Mission critial. Essential things that the network Should do once the Vital points are met. And finally the desirables, things that people want, that can be done given enough time and resources but are not mission critical. Then set out how you are going to meet all the points. Think about whole life cycle, plan refreshes for everything. Some thngs like CCTV or access control might be 10 years or more. Cost in support contracts. Don't initially stick to the budget. Put it down in black and white how much it really costs. Set up a Change Advisory Board, I use the first 15 minutes of the ESLT meeting for this and then all the major stake holders feel they've had a say. Put the strategy before the CAB and let them decide what the school has the budget for. You can then deliver accordingly. Anything asked for above and beyond needs CAB/Budgetary approval. I'm stopping here. I could go on all day about this.
