Cinema tickets are ludicrously overpriced these days, and there are only some films that I'm particularly fussed about seeing on a big screen. Unrelated, but my bus to work had about three people on and stopped exactly twice before I wanted to get off. A typical 35 minute journey took 15 minutes. While I obviously hope COVID-19 goes away quickly, I could get used to that part!!

If the member of staff follows good infection control practice they are unlikely to contract COVID-19 in that scenario. However, that's a lot of uncertainty, and if I were a HT I'd probably direct self-isolation in that case just to be sure...

Fair point. And agreed about case growth - never bet against the exponential function. Without locking everybody in their homes for twelve weeks, cases will continue to grow in the order of e^x.

I'm still skeptical that the UK Gov will close schools given their scientists' approach to things (note - I am in no way criticising this approach, nobody knows for sure what the best way to deal with COVID-19 is). My main concern if they do, as you say, is supporting parents who work in the NHS and related services.

This - many of the responsiveness issues with SIMS are down to inefficient algorithms. You can throw all the resource you want at it, but an O(n^2) algorithm is still going to be slower than the alternatives. For reasons I won't bore you with I've looked at SIMS' internals, and it was a little like peering into Hell.

Putting aside anything else, if the Government mandates school closures, surely not closing would be breaking the law?

We have 20 staff self-isolating with coughs - our HR Manager seems to think that most are "transporting the urine", but in times like these and given our vulnerable students you can't take chances. I've asked the janitor to give the sign-in system and other frequently-touched items in Reception a good spray with alcohol-based disinfectant during the day to minimise risk.

I work very close to LHR, and can see the planes on approach out of my office window. Usually I get one every 30 seconds or so, but ever since the slot rules were loosened they've become far less frequent.

There may also be cheap flights to everywhere as airlines push for cashflow - alternatively if some airlines don't make it and go out of business, prices could go up owing to lack of competition.

Why are we still talking about class A/B/C networks when CIDR has been around since 1993? If you have a choice, use the 10.0.0.0/8, set sensible subnets on your VLANs (i.e. does your data/PC VLAN need a /20 when you've got 500 devices? Probably not.), and you'll have enough room for expansion should you take over every school in your county. (I would also add - never use the 172.16.0.0/12 range if you can avoid it as it's harder to remember and work with mentally.)

747s are never going to be serving regional airports (if only because they're being phased out by passenger carriers anyway!). The new Airbus A220 however would do very nicely - I can imagine BA CityFlyer or some new subsidiary of a major airline picking up a few of Flybe's more profitable routes using those. A significant improvement over the Dash-8s that Flybe used (ever sat by the wing on one of those? Less than pleasant!)
