They’re hopeless. We’ve sacked it.

It seems that Ubiqiuiti say different things in different formats as I've definitely seen Ubiqiuiti employees on their support forum saying 30-50 devices (APs and switches). I would say we ran a small offsite provision off a CloudKey and found performance very sluggish so when we did our main site we decided to host it on a VM and performance is spot on.

Sorry but this is madness, why on earth you'd want to try to encourage this is absolutely beyond me. You are talking about a serious retrograde step - the site on O365 are doing things the right way and your school with on-prem Exchange ought to be looking at migrating their mailboxes into O365.

The CloudKey is only really suitable for smaller installations - Unifi themselves said 30-50 devices - a device being a switch or AP.

I'm using a 6th Gen Core i5 box with only 8gb of RAM and a 256Gb SSD with additional graphics card for 3 screens. I need so much more RAM but it's DDR4 and only has 2 slots which are both filled so it's expensive to upgrade and I'd have to do the Network Manager and the IT Manager's identical PCs too

Alan I know you've made this point before and you're right you would need to be clear about your requirements but as a school we couldn't manage with such low upload speed. Even when I take out our offsite backup that runs our upload requirement is far higher than what you've got there and we've got 160 staff and 1250 kids. Our backup FTTC connection has a 20Mb upload speed and we *really* feel it if we do ever failover as this has a huge impact as once it gets maxed out you get the usual huge performance degradation - particularly evident on SIP phone calls but also even with just general web browsing.

@meadowgirl are you a primary or secondary school? We're a secondary with 6th form and we left the LA about 18 months ago, it's been a big success. We have a connection that is literally 10 times faster for the same price. We sourced our Internet connection (gigabit fibre) and our UTM separately (Smoothwall for the UTM) and the difference is huge - the old LA broadband was so unreliable. We also sourced an additional business FTTC 80Mb backup line because we're heavily reliant on Internet access not just for work but for SIP too - it's barely been used but for the minor additional cost it's worth it.

You need to get your mapped drive content into the cloud - whether it's G Suite or O365 - then Chromebooks will fit what you're looking for. Otherwise they're never going to support mapped local drives like Windows does. Sure there's limited SMB support etc now but it's not going to do what you want unless your content is in the cloud.

So passwords were stored in the clear and then emailed between people? WOW!
-
Viewing user passwords is horrific practice - it means they're being stored using either reversible encryption or in the clear. No one should ever ever ever be able to see passwords.

If the reason you have blocked them is down to them submitting FoI requests then I think that's very different to being blocked for spamming etc. Perhaps you should have an account for FoI requests that is not subject to any spam filtering.
-
Have you had legal advice to confirm this is permitted? If you're actively interfering with an individual's ability to communicate an FoI request I would think that was very bad practice.

Fully migrated to Win 10 1803 - every single device. Most servers are 2016, a few still on 2012 r2 to look at over the next few months or so.

Cloud based DNS web filtering provider
Primus replied to DaveMurphy's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I know you said you want it completely separate from on-prem filtering but the easiest solution is simply to vLAN it off and send it through your existing filter. If you get everything setup correctly then there's no security risk. -

Opting out of local authority internet provision
Primus replied to torgo_uk's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
I think they got the message when every school kicked off and raised it with people outside of the Council's IT Department! They also didn't seem too impressed that every school was going to put in place their own solution for secure data sharing - I couldn't believe their audacity when the email arrived though it did provoke something of a giggle in the office that day. The funny thing is they need the data from us every bit as much as we do from them, if not more! Getting data out of academies is also notoriously difficult for LAs so quite why they'd make it harder is beyond me. -

Wow that is appalling, mind Newcastle recently tried to charge circa £9k pa for a "Cloud Services SLA" that amounted to an RDP shared drive that is used for schools and the LA to share data securely. Note that this charge was waved if a school was part of their WAN at circa £9k anyways. When every school outside of their Managed IT Service said "Errr no thanks" they put a halt on the plans at least for now! -
Opting out of local authority internet provision

Which LAs are only prepared to offer services like HR and payroll over their own WAN links? I think it would be a good opportunity to name and shame them - I do think there's an argument here for them abusing their relationship with schools by doing this and it is plainly anti-competitive. -

Primary or secondary? We did and have never looked back, it's cheaper, 10x faster, far far far more reliable and we have full control of our filtering. Zero downsides.
