  1. Not if you have maintained illuminated signs...
  2. Thanks but I'm specifically after the Serco-endorsed API.
  3. Yes, although we dumped it into a CSV and pulled it down from time to time for manual checking and processing.
  4. What are the two arrangements? edit: and get yourself on Unofficial Chat, Miss Little-Miss!
  5. Dragging this back from the depths, does anybody know if the CMIS/Facility API is available to schools for a reduced or zero rate, or if there's an equivalent of SIMS' command reporter?
  6. Active Directory doesn't allow anonymous binds for lookups. You can enable this (Anonymous LDAP operations in Windows 2003 AD), or you can assign an account to the service.
  7. There's no fundamental difference between desktop and server editions of Ubuntu. You'll lose a tiny bit of memory on the graphical desktop, but you really won't notice the difference.
  8. Your thread title is misleading.
  9. Why? Administering a server in this manner requires that you are comfortable and confident: - using the shell to manage files - using the shell to administer MySQL databases - using the shell for disaster recovery (failed disk, for example) - using the shell to install and manage packages and complex configuration - using the shell to apply *very* important security patches, like the one last week that trivially allows root access to any user - using the shell to diagnose performance problems or attacks with minimum tools and maximum stress If you are not both of those things in all of these tasks, it's not worth putting the school's data and your reputation on the line because it seems a good idea. ("because it has server in the name" is rarely a good reason). Much better to set yourself up some play machines and get yourself a thorough understanding of the shell, the Ubuntu system and the File Hierarchy Standard first, then tackle a project like this. (tip: start with these things.)
  10. Deja vu........ nope, it still hasn't been implemented.
  11. We did this.
  12. Our parental access is done through our MIS, there's no tie-up with the VLE. We had to write a couple of helper tools ourselves (boy, that was fun...), but most of the functionality is built-in. I'm happy to discuss how we do it by email.
  13. We have a handful of Xerox Phaser 8560 wax printers on the LNL Printers for Schools scheme, and they're excellent. Storing the wax blocks is a whole lot more efficient than toners (they're tiny!) and you can top the printer up on the go without waiting for it to run out first.
  14. +1 on both counts.
  15. Now's a good time to learn about VB parameters, variables, passing by value/reference and ADO then...
  16. Considering the OP: ...I guess CMDLine1 used to hold the call to change permissions and the call to it hasn't been removed as it should.
  17. See ADO Execute Method. You should pass by reference a variable to that call, which will hold the quantity of rows affected. If it's 0, you had a problem.
  18. It's difficult to suggest a solution without understanding the purpose. Why are you making this comparison, and why in Javascript?
  19. Your scheme is no better; someone forgetting to close the folder (example: jumps up to investigate sudden screaming in the next room) poses exactly the same problem. Secondary authentication just inconveniences and annoys legitimate users, it does almost nothing to fix the authentication problems society already has.
  20. After three years of having to hack around with reports and CSV imports and so (this is for Eclipse.net and CMIS, mind, so YMMV) I finally caved and bought MLS Connect. It is a piece of art, no hesitation signing off the £75 subscription for the time it saved me. Imports take about thirty seconds now
  21. Ask Microsoft, not uninitiated non-lawyers.
  22. Not quite (my emphasis). It affects x64 kernels that have been built with 32-bit emulation compatibility. Home-brew kernels and some distribution stock kernels may not have this capability and so aren't affected, though you are advised to refresh the sources used for them to avoid inadvertent recompilation with the emulation enabled.
  23. I use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/active-directory-integration/
  24. Of course with my severe Debian bias, I'd say Debian/Asterisk, but failing that I'd have AsteriskNow.
