I have some pretty old cable runs and I may be suffering from something called "flapping" where the signal through the CAT5e is marginal and is causing the network card to constantly change speeds. My fluke tester will say if the cable is connected correctly and the length of each pair but isn't going to run a test to check this... So I think I'd like a qualifier (if that is the right term)

Think that'd be overkill, most classrooms only have the teacher using Wi-Fi on a single laptop. Per classroom would take us from 32 APs to around 100! Then the additional cabling and POE switches. As long as they can get around 100Mbps (of actual throughput) I'm happy. This room was down to 19Mbps. The crappy Realtek RTL8852CE had a low signal but didn't work at all! I had to retro swap an intel 8265 to get it working (same low signal but worked)... This room has ethernet for the UBC hub but after moving the socket was too far.

I've been slowly replacing whiteboards throughout the school with Magnetic whiteboards (for UST interactive) as they project onto better. (as they are flat and don't warp when pushed) Welp, poor Wi-Fi for half a term in an older classroom and it has dawned on me that these giant metal slabs can block Wi-Fi quite effectively. We'd moved a desk (to a different wall), a UST projector and installed a NEW metal whiteboard. What I didn't consider was the Wi-Fi AP the other side of the wall... Doh. it is 100% blocked and now connects rather far away, 1 floor down and two classrooms across!

I've been seeing STP warnings for a while now on my network but as everything was working, I've not been too concerned. Well today I went chasing one and observed that the STP block was bouncing around 5 different sockets (wired Windows PCs) on the same switch. I think I've twigged that the P2P updates for Windows update must be triggering the STP alerts. I do have delivery optimization enabled. Does this sound plausible? Also couldn't find an "edge port" option in unifi...

ok, don't set them as minor, I did setup as "not adult" and it took me the the search page. BUT I have a coming soon to the copilot page so maybe a false fix. (I didn't check before)

what happens if you disable copilot? I think you can set the pupils to "not an adult" or "minor" in azure.

You can age out local profiles in GPO (mine are set to 14 days) also the profiles get massive if you are using MSIX installers. (as each pupil get a copy of the entire program)

remove the mail licence from their accounts, through the web interface you can do up to 50 pupils at a time.

this dirty laptop bag was just returned with a teacher laptop, it just needs a clean and is 100% solid (even the zips) This laptop bag came with a laptop that had no OPTIONAL Wi-Fi, I can't say how old it was but we stuck bromcom cards in the side, then later b wifi pcmcia cards. The laptop bags were made better back then. (approx 2004) edit: the old inventory says it they were: The Fujitsu LIFEBOOK C1020 was released around 2002...

Just an oddity, I'd share here: Looking for a box to post out some items, found this box in use on my shelf and read the label... Addressed to me 17 years ago! The disposable box out lived the item it was carrying and now has more value than the goods... Also I have been working here a while...

Recently I've been asked to move the SQL databases for SIMS, FMS and SOLUS3. I was given half the instructions for SIMS and FMS and has to get external support to finish.. But the SOLUS3 instructions were as follows... I used to get step by step, instructions with pictures, now I get, that... I have no idea restore a SQL instance, what I'd need to do it. I'm not asking here, I'm showing that Captia are reducing support so you have to pay for remote support or move to the hosted solution.. They are doing this by crapping up support. Back in 2008 they gave us a course on how to migrate and the instructions, now this!

34 hp probook 440 g7, in 5 years only 1 broken usbc port. (probook does have a dc charge port but on-site we have usbc docks.) We have had DP-alt issues but cleaning solves them. My new Lenovo Thinkpads have 2 usbc ports that both allow charging, I think that is enough margin.

if the projector has a serial port (or better an Ethernet) you could script a telnet command at login to do a "source search" but what an effort!

Fusion 360 online, it is full fusion 360 but in an RDP session for chromebooks. You will have to apply to Autodesk for free licences and have the teacher assign them. It is slow and I hate it. Good luck. (we now use full fusion 360 locally but the windows deploy and updates are a struggle)

You'll still need a windows device to "print" to the laser cutter.. So what ever it is will have to be importable to 2d design. (probably a .dxf)

Lenovo have made me clean the OS, update all drivers, update the BIOS, run the laptop in 2.4ghz only mode, run the projector in 2.4ghz only mode and now uninstall eset antivirus! Still runs poorly and buggs out in interactive.

does anyone know how to setup SQL 2022 and the new sims instance... on the first page it tells me to begin the migration I need to install SQL 2022 and create a instance.... ! that's it! no step by step, click here, select this, name that, create this, just a go for it?! I'm being told that as SQL 2022 is Microsoft product and I have to figure it out as my safso (county sims support) offer no support on Microsoft products only sims! So I can pay sims £500 to do the migration... So there are instructions but not for me but magically for £500 I can have someone else follow the instructions that are not in existence.

From my HP ProBook 440 G7's to my G8 and now my brand new expensive Lenovo E14 Gen6 21M3, All have come with Realtek cards, all are just crud. (think more profane description) The brand new Lenovo ThinkPad E14 (21M3) comes with a new Realtek 6e Wi-Fi module, I though I'd escaped the unlucky jank I had with the old 8833 cards.... Wrong! The new RTL8852CE is borked.. These cards even using the latest 330 drivers, will not work with Miracast. They'll connect, the image quality will drop and after 10-30 seconds they'll drop the screen mirroring. (Using Epson EB-720Wi and 760Wi, nice UST laser projectors) I tried every permutation to get it to work and I just said to the teacher let me try something... I have some old Intel 8265 cards, I popped it in and it works immediately, 100% and the teacher claims that her files open much faster now and the wallpaper is back?!.. Almost an hour faffing with the 8852 card and opening a brand new laptop and sticking a 2017 Wi-Fi module the laptop works much better! These old intel cards were the fix for the old Realtek cards in my 2019 laptops (that would connect but pass no traffic, then drop the signal to 1 bar (after 2 years)) I replaced all Wi-Fi Realtek modules... looks like I'm doing that again in the near future... I thought Realtek would be ok this time, I should have my head checked! I've opened a tech support from Lenovo but am expecting a run around of very remedial checks and blaming the environment or projectors.

I have an 83" benq, and I'll see where the dongle is hidden and install the instaShare2 software. it'd be better if miracast was a selectable input like the epson projectors though (we also don't connect the TV to the internet as it is distracting, unmonitored, filtering, etc) I "think" the GPO will set the desktop resolution NOT the "active" resolution, so the cable(s) signal integrity is still an issue. (it'll show 1080p desktop over a 4k signal and fall apart) Anyhow make a 1080/30 HDMI port and call it "sure thing link" or "Robusto Port". oh the usbc port on my benq is at the front, put one on the side and make a clamp available (or zip tie spot) as people tug on the cable! (or steal it!) btw btw, you have a built in clock and made it analogue... the kids need digital! (I made my own html version) btwbtwbtw the clock drifts about 15 minutes a week.... a 1983 Casio keeps better time. (internet would probably fix that) cheers

hey @BenQ_Chris if you can pass this up the chain, an HDMI input that is limited to 1080p would be a great option. (4k is too unreliable in tough environments) (while you are here) built in Wi-Fi (no dongle or removable antennas) and built in miracast with touch feedback. (not your own version;) (epson can do it)

on our clevertouch after new cables, adaptors, and PCs, we installed a VGA cable and a DP to VGA adaptor.. As we just could not get the TV (on any input) with any cable combo to 100% always display a picture. We also tried 2 different docking stations and 2 different dp to hdmi adaptors (passive and active) as well as the native HDMI as well as an optical HDMI cable.. TV has 3 HDMI inputs.. Nothing would get the picture 100% of the time.. TV would run at 4k30 and fail sometimes... VGA is stuck at 1080p but works 100%... We also used contact cleaner 2 desktops and 2 laptops for testing.. Fricking HDMI....

all 4k displays create annoying, intermittent issues with the image... All devices should have a 1080p mode. Windows is a unique pain as you cannot override the active display resolution.
