I think the "pre-assigned" terminology cited in the OP is basically saying that you'll need to ring up MS support and request that a KMS key is made available for you. That's certainly what I had to do to obtain our current Server 2019 KMS key. As already mentioned, there is a threshold of activation requests that needs to be met before a KMS server will actually begin handing out activations. That's not the case if you're using the newer Active Directory based activation (ADBA), which is the successor to KMS server and is far simpler imho. It's still based on having a KMS key to use, however, so I don't think KMS keys are on the way out - it's just Microsoft requiring you to jump through a few hoops to obtain them in the first place, for whatever business reasons they might have for that.

It's a bit like unsmashing a vase. You do all you can to prevent someone smashing it in the first place, but you'll want a spare in case they manage to do it. Particularly if there are countries out there who find the smashing of foreign vases by their cyber-crims as geopolitically convenient.

Does using ConnectionType=TRUSTED help at all? You'd still need to punch in your credentials, but it might not require you to do a runas.

Even if autoupgrade is on (i.e. Get-ADSyncAutoUpgrade returns 'Enabled'), if you don't have a premium Azure license, Azure AD Connect won't automatically upgrade itself. The documentation about Azure AD Connect automatic upgrade states: Azure AD Connect Health requires a premium Azure license. So those on the free tier will need to be upgrading manually each time.

If you plan your meals for the week, anything that needs defrosting can be taken out of the freezer the night before and placed in the fridge. Google Sites is a good suggestion for something to throw together. IME staff tend to prefer to have the browser just resume whatever tabs were open when the browser was last closed, so be sure to allow them that option, too.

Been using GLPI for years (self hosting for free), but the other ITAM products suggested here will be worth considering, too. Would recommend one that uses agents and network discover/scanning to automate the collection and updating of your inventory data. Probably not unique to GLPI, but it will populate a tonne of info such as BIOS version, OS details, installed software versions, whether BitLocker is enabled on volumes, antivirus database versions, etc. No native barcode support, other than just taking barcode input straight into a search form. There's a CSV plugin available for GLPI which allows you to do CSV based imports or updates, too. There's also a REST API if you want to get really 21st century.

Those user modifications look fine. You're correct in your assessment of them. RE: the groups, I suspect you'd need to create and populate AD groups. Try creating an AD group and giving it a 'mail' attribute to match the address of the corresponding Google group (check your GCDS Groups config section to see what AD attirbutes it will be using for a group's display name, description, etc.). Simulate a sync in GCDS to see whether it's going to link the two and whether it will update your existing Google group with the properties and memberships of the new AD group.

I'd be interested to know how usage of space telescopes is administered. The logistics of the thing must be mega. I'm guessing that it's just a bit more sophisticated than the kinds of Google Forms/Sharepoint lists that we're all accustomed to having to throw together in schools. An entire planet's worth of scientists all needing to use the same one thing, perhaps at a time that they won't know until they get to use it. How do you get it pointed at what you want it pointed at?

Vault shouldn't be thought of as a backup & restore tool. It doesn't really give you a "what was the state of this fileset at X date and time?" capability, and there's no in-place, granular recovery.

We're using Google but the same principles will apply. We have about half a dozen different calendars: some are made public (term dates is one, school events like concerts, etc. is another) and some are shared only with staff. As well as allowing for distinctions between private/public it also means that end users can show/hide the different calendars in their calendar app for ease of use.

We use Datto Backupify. Licensing is per user per month. You don't have to license all of your users, if you only need data for a subset of your users to be being protected. Thrice-daily snapshots retained for a year or something iirc.

When Brits think of American actors doing British accents we tend to think of the vanilla, plummy Bridget Jones type or a cockney geezer type. Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce in Outlaw King is perhaps a good counter-example, though. I'm not a Scot, but I was never not convinced by him watching that.
