Assuming that the domain is at a 2000 functional level, the latest OS that will work with that is 2008 R2. Adding a 2008 R2 DC would allow you to raise the functional level to 2008 R2. You could then add a DC running anything up to Server 2022 to get the functional level up to 2016 (current latest). Don't retain that 2008 R2 server. After doing all that, use PingCastle to identify and address any dangerous legacy configurations.

I can't put my hand to any roller shutter things, but using AIO PCs rather than USFF+monitor would be a simpler thing to mount. It'd be a straightforward VESA mount, and will keep closer in to the wall. If it's simply a matter of hiding the PCs from view, what about a regular window roller blinds, made to measure? It'd offer no physical protection, but would blank the things out of view.

Check that within that Search and Assistant app that you've got the Google Assistant and Voice and Face Match options turned off. They probably will be by default, but worth a check. This was a fairly recent change by Google, and I think you might need consent to turn the app on for under-18s. We have it turned off for our students, but they're only getting that "before you can continue" splash once per session, so not annoying in the way that others are finding.

Quick question about Trelson - is it something that could be set up such that users could use it whenever they like? One of the caveats for exams is that candidates using a word processor need to have gained familiarity with the tool prior to using it in their exams. With EWP, we leave that installed on the machines year round, so that students are free to try it out without needing to have an arranged session.

I think it would be a disservice to call it a PDA.

Maybe look at having your Ukrainian pupils' devices (assuming they're individually assigned) in a dedicated OU in Google Admin, so that you can allow the settings pages for them. I think if you specify languages in Admin > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers > Allowed input methods, they might still need to be able to access the settings pages in order to add them anyway. Not tested that but that's what I'd expect.

If your affected users don't have the Search And Assistant app enabled in Admin > Apps > Additional Google services, then they can't be signed in on Google Search pages, even if they're signed into their Google account across all the other apps. That's why the "before you continue" pop-up displays when they first load Google Search, and also why they don't appear as signed in on Google Search but are signed in on Gmail, etc. If that message is reappearing with a new browser window, it suggests that the user's session is perhaps missing some cookie or other. Might be worth testing via a mobile hotspot, free of any local filtering?

I leave those settings blank to allow users to pick from all languages. The user will need to be guided through a few different things: Adding an input language: After signing into the Chromebook, open Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Inputs and keyboards. Add languages under Input methods and Spelling and grammar check as required, keeping English in the list as well. The input language can then be switched in the system tray (or by Ctrl+Space). Setting their Google account language: This sets the language used for the UI across Google web apps: Gmail, Classroom, etc. on all devices they use. Go to Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Languages, scroll down to the Google Account language section and follow the link to Manage Google Account language. Change the preferred language as required, keeping English listed under Other languages. Setting the Chromebook device language: This sets the Chrome OS interface language of the current device: sign out button, system panel toggles, etc. Go to Chrome OS settings > Advanced > Languages and inputs > Languages and change Device language.

We've added the app to the list of published apps that staff can install for themselves from add/remove programs. The few people who need or prefer to have it can then have it without it sitting there in everyone's Start menu.

Our staff get invited by external contacts to join Zoom meetings all the time. It's one of a handful of different video conferencing platforms that workers receive invitations to these days. It seems like a total non-starter to say "we're not going to let you join any Zoom meetings". That puts staff in an absurd position.

Have important account details in a password manager, with details of how that can be accessed sealed in an envelope and stored in a safe. That's the school's break-glass option in case you become suddenly unavailable. Have your documentation available independently of any other school systems. If the AD domain becomes unavailable, you'll still want to have ready access to your documentation. We use DokuWiki, hosted online and entirely separate from our other systems (and not reliant on any single sign-on). In terms of useful things to document, perhaps document any workflows for things like new user provisioning, name changes and staff leaver deprovisioning. Even if you automate stuff as much as possible, there may still be some manual tasks associated with those things. I've also found it useful to document all the various tasks that need doing at the beginning of a new academic year, since there are lots of different things to do and you'll never remember them all from one year to the next. They might also change slightly from one year to the next, so tweak your documentation as you go.

The latest version of Surpass Viewer includes a slight change to the publisher details, so AppLcoker rules to allow the installer to run will need to be updated. The new publisher string is: O=BTL GROUP LTD, L=SHIPLEY, S=WEST YORKSHIRE, C=GB Previous versions had L=BRADFORD.

The waffle menu on the Chrome new tab page doesn't follow whatever custom sorting the user has done to their waffle menu elsewhere, it's just a default selection/sorting that doesn't include Classroom. As soon as you open the waffle menu from any other Google web app, it'll be the user's custom selection/sorting. That may explain why Classroom isn't appearing as described.

Given that the wording of the DfE guidance doesn't actually state "social media" for this stuff, doesn't that make it easier to push back against requests to set up dummy Facebook accounts and the like? I expect people have thought "search social media" assuming that that will proffer more insight than a list of people with a particular name. The intention of the guidance is surely just to do a simple check of the public domain (i.e. web search) for any news articles and the like in case there's something that's not been caught by DBS?
