The other advantage of running laptops rather than desktops is that a decent number of them are likely to be using people's home energy as stored in the battery, rather than the school's energy, necessarily. In a 1:1 scenario, an expectation that pupils bring their devices in with enough juice for the day will save the school a decent amount over running rooms of desktops.

Ooh, what case are they in? I discovered KR cases the other year and there's something deeply satisfying about seeing trays full of painted minis in them.

Apologies, we are seeing that same behaviour here, after all. Staff machines are assigned and not shared here, with local profiles, so a first-run progress bar of this kind won't be encountered by people very often. I've just deployed the latest package to upgrade the previous one, and the first-run config didn't need to be repeated after the upgrade, interestingly. VLC stores some bits in user profiles (appdata/roaming), so that's presumably what it's setting up on first-run. I've never tried the zip package, but maybe that might be worth a try instead of the MSI?

Well done on the magnetisation. I had plans for fully magnetising a Trygon/Trygon Prime/Mawloc, but ended up just glueing a Prime together once I saw how difficult magnetising Tyranids was going to be. Such organic shapes don't lend themselves to magnets.

That looks like it could have a good chance of working and not interfering with genuine share requests from internal users. I don't have a share request email to hand to look at the particulars, though.

You could have a look at whether a Gmail content compliance rule could be used to match and drop those request notificiations. It may not be possible to distinguish between those resulting from genuine internal access requests and those from external users, however, since they'll likely all appear the same. As long as your user accounts aren't able to share externally, I guess it's contained to just being a bit of a nuisance and a distraction for people. I expect you're right about it being children using computers with consumer accounts signed in, though. Distributing guidance around Chrome profiles, etc. may be worthwhile.

If you're needing the external accounts to be able to contribute to shared drives in your Workspace domain, the shared drives will need to be in an OU with the equivalent settings being applied to it as well. Best to be selective about which shared drives are available externally in this way (create an OU for the purpose and move only the required shared drives into that OU, leaving all the other shared drives limited to use within the organisation only).

Google Admin > Apps > Google Workspace > Drive and Docs > Sharing settings. Select the relevant OU and adjust the settings as required. Edit ---- As an alternaive to applying this setting per OU, you can also set it for Groups. That will give you more fine-grained control of who can share externally.

Working for us okay here, as far as I know. Are you assigning the package under Computer Config in GPO?

We've been enjoying watching the Aussie Bake-Off, and the hosts on that are really good. They tend to do the Mel & Sue thing of heavy puns during timecalls, rather than drawing a smiley on a wooden spoon, calling them Kevin and getting contestants to talk to it, etc.

Is there any mileage in leveraging your web filter for achieveing this? With ours, we maintain a walled garden filtering profile that is used for this purpose (allowing pupils to access Gmail, Classroom, Docs, EduLink, etc. but no web search or wider web access) which is applied when a user is configured to use the corresponding proxy port. To do this with Chrome users, you'd need the users in a particular OU, where a per-user WiFi network is then configured for that OU. Quite cumbersome, but would mean you don't have to maintain URL allowlists in Google Admin.

Hi all I'm attempting to cobble together a Chrome extension that will log which users signed in to which devices and when. This is to help pinpoint vandalism, etc. on shared Chromebooks. The recent users list provided in Google Admin is insufficient as it doesn't provide any timestamps against usernames, and more detailed logging still doesn't seem to be available. It's my first time doing anything much with Javascript, Chrome extension development, etc. and needing a few pointers. I plan on sharing this stuff if I can get it working, since I know other schools may want itemised Chromebook sign-in logging, too. I've managed to make a Chrome extension that will grab the current username and the hostname of the current device and display that in a little pop-up, but I just need to work out how to get the extension to make an HTTP post request containing those two bits of info. I've created an AppSheet app for the purposes of testing, to which I've successfully been able to send username/hostname combos via HTTP post requests (from an Apps Script project). If I can get the Chrome extension to successfully make those API calls, I'll have produced a proof of concept that I can then build on. This is where I'm coming up short and Googling is not really helping to clarify things. Does anyone have experience of building Chrome extensions?

They may want or need to walk out of the room (toilet trip, printing to another room), or just across the room for some other reason, without leaving their workstation unlocked. Also, a hanging application may cause a user-initiated sign-out to cancel and return to the desktop after the class has left the room. In those instances, that user won't inadvertantly be left signed in and unlocked for any longer than the locking timeout. This is one of those different-schools-different-expectations things, I think. We allow user locking here, but I don't see all that many locked machines whenever I'm working on a room, tbh, and it doesn't cause us any problems. YMMV.

You could maybe set something up using ClickSend. You can create sub accounts on there with different privileges, so you might be able to craft something suitable.

A locked computer needn't mean a computer that can't be used by somebody else, if that's the objection.
