Yeah, definitely the way to go. After being used to IOS/Android/OSX I think we've come to expect free OS version upgrades for a couple of years after buying a product. It's probably in MS's interest anyway to get all it's customers onto the latest version with the included app store and start generating revenue! Seems to be the way things are going rather than trying to sell OS updates which I suspect the majority of it's customer base never bought except with new hardware anyway.

120Gb is a bit on the small side. Would be better to grab a 256Gb SSD which is about the price/capacity sweet spot at the moment by the looks of it. Maybe something like a crucial mx100 256gb as others have suggested for £80. I wouldn't bother with a hybrid drive when SSD's can be had so cheaply TBH. Their performance isn't on a par with SSD's. Just grabbed Shovel Knight for £7. Been wanting to play that for a while so I can get some 8-bit NES platforming kicks! Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas and are both on offer as well. Well worth getting if you don't already own them.

We use ManageEngine as an alternative to SCCM. We previously had SCCM installed but as you;ve said found it far too cumbersome to administer and maintain plus it seemed to have a habit of breaking itself. We've found Manage Engine's Desktop Central pretty useful but unfortunately it's nowhere near as cheap as SCCM when you factor in MS's educational discounts. It does have a lot of very handy features though and offers similar functionality to SCCM. We're also using their servicedesk which integrates into the desktop central so it can do nifty things like software installs to open calls and requests in the service desk. They also maintain a central repository of common apps/updates like java/adobe reader/ Flash/etc to save you the hassle of manually packaging them when a new version appears. Been playing a bit of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and it's quite good fun but unbelievably short/small for a what was marketed as a full game. You basically attack the same, fairly small, compound and once completing the initial story, which only takes a couple of hours, you're then left repeating the same map carrying out different missions (kill these targets, rescue this target, blow up these places, etc). It's a decent port and entertaining but even for £11 on steam sale it doesn't really feel like great value due how limited what's on offer is. On the plus side it bodes well for the next 'proper' metal gear game though. This just feels like they were in the process of making the Phantom Pain, realised it was going to take 3-4 years to complete and they needed a way to raise some cash in the meantime to keep Konami ticking over and their shareholders happy! In terms of recommendations for other games on sale Valkyria Chronicles is on daily deal for £11 and is a fantastic game if you like JRPG/Turn-based/Strategy games like Final Fantasy/Advance wars.

Still using my iPhone 4S and TBH if I needed to replace it I'd probably follows the iSheep flock and go for an iPhone 6... Yeah, IOS is a bit meh and not very customisable but everything generally works reliably and I haven't had any issues with my previous iPhones. If Google had released an updated version of the Nexus 5 I'd had been tempted to upgrade to that but I personally think the Nexus 6 is too large and it's priced so high it's no longer the bargain that the Nexus 5 was.

Yeah, if you check the video below it can be shrunk or removed. Hopefully they'll add the option to replace it with a Google Search and/or let other programs link into it. New build of Windows 10 shows Cortana, unified app store, ability to buy Xbox One games on PC | ExtremeTech I'm hoping MS have been holding back some of the more impressive features for the official unveil in January as so far it's all a bit 'Meh'. They've made the Metro apps 'window-able' though there's still no compelling reason to use them on a laptop/desktop. A Cortana 'search bar' that will likely use Bing and be unable to find anything. The settings screen is still an abomination from what I can see aswell. At least if fixes a few of Windows 8's foibles but for 2 years worth of development work I'd kind of expected a few more features and UI improvements. Haven't seen anything to get excited about thus far.......

Isn't Windows font/UI scaling still a bit ropey to consider going 4k for a computer monitor yet? Is anyone using one as their primary computer display?

The Devils Canyon i7-4790k is definitely the chip to have at the moment budget permitting. Video card wise I'd still say go green (Nvidia) or go home but YMMV

The multiplayer is awesome as well by the way. I bought it again on PS4 mainly for that alone. It also had all of the DLC packs included.

I'd just buy a replacement motherboard off ebay TBH and see if you can get it working again. The graphics card bargain of the moment is the recently released Geforce 970 4GB which you can grab for around £250. If you source a replacement motherboard and install that you'll have a fantastic system capable of running anything for around £300-350. A modern CPU won't be hugely quicker than your i7-950 whereas you'll get a very noticeable jump in performance gaming on a 900-series GPU. By way of strange coincidences I have the exact same Asus motherboard as you with an i7-920 in my PC actually! I keep looking at upgrade options but I've never really found anything to justify the cost of changing. The only thing I've upgraded in the 5 years I've had it has been to replace a faulty GeForce 470 video card with a GeForce 770. Now it runs everything maxed at 1080p with ease Assuming it keeps soldiering on I'll probably buy a new SSD when Windows 10 is released as the 80Gb one in it just now is choc full and won't survive the upgrade to Windows 10! There's an interesting thread on OCUK about X58 owners buying 6 core Xeon 5650 CPU's off ebay, overclocking them and achieving performance that's faster than most modern CPU's. 1366 X58 Xeon 5650 - Overclockers UK Forums The X58 platform will live forever I can't believe I've owned a CPU for 5 years and I'm still happy with the performance it offers........!

Got Far Cry 4 on my Santa list! The 3rd one was fantastic and I loved blood dragon. Even though this just looks like more of the same I couldn't contemplate not playing it. Hopefully Ubisoft will have fixed all the bugs and performance issues in the PC version by Xmas

For anyone unfamiliar with the game Valkyria Chronicles is a sort of hybrid real time turn-based strategy game with some RPG elements thrown in for good measure. It was released on PS3 back in 2008 and for some odd reason, though I'm glad they did, Sega have recently ported it across to PC and made it available on Steam. It's a pretty awesome port as everything now runs at 1080p smoothly and because of the cell shaded animated style of the graphics it doesn't really look dated at all. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone at all interested turn based strategy and/or JRPG's. I Usually wait for single player stuff like this to appear on steam sales but I'm kind of excited at the thought of playing it through in PC with the extra DLC plus I'm hoping it buying it at launch encourages Sega to release the sequels on PC. They only appeared on PlayStation portable which is a system I'll never buy as I've no interest in handheld gaming devices. Its pretty high in the charts just now, and getting good reviews, so hopefully it proves popular. Useful thread this! Is there a specific reasons Microsoft removed the proxy settings from the Group Policy Management Console? It seems archaic when it's nearly 2015 having to hack together scripts and registry edits to do something simple like this?

We've tried setting this and it works OK but cause Google Chrome to crash when closing it. Anyone else had this issue?
