Hi I've setup a single Ex2K10 server and am about to start a migrate from our old trusty Ex2K3 server. At the moment the file structure on the Ex2K10 server is split so the log files are on drive D and the mailbox databases are on drive E (separate physical devices) I'm using the inbuilt W2K8r2 backup software to produce a .vhd every night which is then copied to two NAS's stored in separate buildings as far away from the server as physically possible (fire, flood, locust etc). I'm backing up both the logs and the databases. Just checking that by splitting the logs away from the databases (the default path on install suggests putting them both off the same directory root) I'm not giving myself issues further down the line if I want to do single user restores etc. Should I be going: d:\exchange\logs\* e:\exchange\databases\* or e:\exchange\logs\* e:\exchange\databases\* Or doesn't it really matter as long as I backup both? We get staff to install PocketCloud on all their Android and Apple devices for RDP access to work. No complaints as yet in over 6 months of use. The free version only allows one RDP connection to be configured at a time and a couple of advanced features (mainly screen res) are only available in the paid for version but all in all, the free version works fine. I've been playing with a Zoostorm SL8 Mini Tablet (7" screen) Works fine (runs everything I've thrown at it inc RDP client) but battery life isn't great.... Andrew

It was firmware v 20120615 that cured this behavior for all my 2055's if that's any help? Andrew

Remote desktop? 24/7 access is huge here and has made a massive difference to staff and pupils. (Maybe not so relevant if you are a primary school though)

Hi Looking for ideas as to where to go with this, I'm sat arguing with myself back and forth the pros and cons of each option. Currently running Exchange 2003/Windows 2003 in house and using Outlook 2010 as the client for all staff and students. Database size is about 70Gb and hundreds of thousands of emails stored within it (not really been tidied up for about 9 years...) The whole thing works fine but it's all getting very close to EOL for comfort. Budget is available for a new server if required and Exchange and CALS are already covered under EES. No plans to change from Windows 7, Office 2010 on all PC's for the next 12 months. As I see it, two options:- Option 1, migrate the lot to a new Windows 2012, Exchange 2013 box and keep it all in-house Option 2, migrate the lot to Office 365 for Education (plan A2?) for free using my existing EES licensing Could I get some feedback from users who have gone down option 2 and hosted the lot in the cloud, what is performance like for users with say 5000 emails in their inbox, how reliable is the service from Microsoft, how is it backed up, how good are the anti-virus and spam filtering and can that be managed, how easy is the migration from W2K3 to cloud, how well does it seamlessly integrate into my existing AD etc. If I'm honest, I'm leaning towards option 2 but I keep having nagging doubts it's still a bit early to be putting all these eggs in one outsourced basket. If you can still find them, the Kodak PlaySport Zx3 would be perfect. My PE department has 4 of them and it shoots perfect HD in all conditions and has survived several rugby tours/ skiing trips etc without a scratch... We do all our EPIP and match recording on them Andrew

Hi Building some heavily locked down "thin Client" Windows 8 PC's. Turned off just about every functionality imaginable so just left with RDP icon on the desktop, does anyone know any way to completely disable the right click functionality on the desktop? Cheers Andrew

Same problem here with XP and IE8. As a work round, I've put a portable copy of Firefox in the exams officers home drive and they are using that for the time to access AQA. Bit of a PIA especially as it's results download day but my fault for not upgrading the PC to Win7 earlier.....

Hi Just before I spend hours re-inventing the wheel, does anyone have a list of useful JetDirect OID's for things like supply status, pages remaining etc? I've walked the snmp tree trying to match known values with values from snmpwalk but I can't find any matches. Slowly going mad.... Reason why is that I'm playing with Pandora FMS for site monitoring and having setup all the servers and wifi points I'm now looking at printer monitoring. TIA for any guidance Andrew

You can use the old ssmypics.scr from Windows XP and it works fine in Windows 7. We use two screen savers, one for not logged in (runs from drive c) and a logged in screen saver (runs from the server). Both directories contain a single jpg file. These are the keys I used in the build, pick out the keys of interest to customise it for your own preferences. You can try rubbing the pick-up roller with some fine sandpaper first, with cheap paper the roller gets covered in lacquer and looses it's friction grip of the paper. A quick rub will roughen up the roller again and the paper will pick-up properly. We quite often service our printers like this and it makes a massive difference. Andrew

Just to throw an alternative view in the ring, our PE department all have 10" netbooks which have an RDP link back to the TS box and Kodak PlaySport video cameras with 8GB SD cards in them. As the netbooks have an SD slot, they can edit their video and photos on the fly. Been like that for over a year now and I never see them

I got mugged by sixth formers rattling a bucket as I walked in. I did change the BGInfo wallpaper this morning to mark the occasion.
