  1. Ours used to be hosted externally but when I rewrote it last year I moved it back on-site on a new IIS server. This means it can be directly edited rather than having to have Contribute installed (the old web masters tool of choice for editing) and it also means some staff can be mapped directly to only their section of the web for editing their stuff. TBH there isn't really a correct answer for hosting, each organisation is going to be different with users, needs, resources, internet speeds etc. Hosting is good for schools with little spare capacity on their own servers, whereas having it onsite (even on an XAMPP box) gives more manageability and flexibility.. Andrew
  2. 60 pc's left to do out of 650 in total. Easy to sell to LT, £45 per pc to refresh it for at least 3 more years or £300 per pc for a new one. RAM upgrades to 8Gb next year ready for Win 10.3r2 rollout in Summer 2016. Have just added SCCM to our EES so we can start the initial builds. As others have said, you work on a PC without a SSD these days and it's just so slow
  3. Thanks everyone, the free app download was the one Cheers Andrew
  4. Morning all. Simple sounding question but I can't find a way to do this.. I have one VI student who we are issuing an ipad too to help with his learning. All I want to do is create an apple account with no credit card so he can download updates and free apps (it's a trusted student before everyone gasps in horror...) but effectively block him from downloading anything that costs. I've seen numerous guides how to do this but it always loops round to credit card details after accepting the AUP logging in on the ipad. Any assistance in stopping me going mad appreciated.... Andrew
  5. If you can still find a copy, richprofile would help you as you can start outlook with numerous command lines, the location of the ost file being one of them
  6. Lots of reports of slow here as well, a Kerboodle sign-up session this morning was a bit of a disaster. Going to reboot our proxy servers tonight but my staff.proxy connection isn't great either. Andrew
  7. Never mind, we've got it. 162/54=3
  8. So my daughter has brought this one home and we are stumped!! The question is:- Using each of the numbers 1,2,3,4,5 & 6 only once find the solution to abc/de=f I've got close, for example 214/35=6.1 but yet to crack it. Anyone? Cheers Andrew
  9. Got rid of the last one at Easter. Funnily enough it was the bursars PC that was last, he had some bespoke finance software he was running that wouldn't work on 7 for love nor money but about 15 minutes after he decided he no longer needed it the machine had an SSD and was being reformatted
  10. Thanks Arthur, got it all installed now Andrew
  11. Am I missing something regarding VAMT? I installed a new volume licensing server on 2012R2 to replace my now retired 2003 server and all appears to be working, but on some Microsoft sites it says that VAMT is installed as part of installing VL. I've had a look and I can't see it, do I need to install it or is 2012 different?
  12. Yup, same here as well. I thought it was just my PC as I'm defraging exchange databases at the moment but clearly not. Nice to see it's starting to creak with only a handful of staff back, can't wait for Tuesday... Andrew
  13. Nah, two degrees doesn't cut it here, most of the teaching staff are PhD, MA or MSc. We've got more Dr's than a private hospital....
  14. Grammar school here after working in FE/HE for 16 years. Have been here 6 years and have no plans to leave. Great students (many more intelligent than me and I have 2 degrees!!!), really nice staff and a supportive Leadership Team. I know you don't want to hear this but it was the best move I ever made. Andrew
  15. How good is Endpoint? Been looking at a few reviews and it appears it's zero day performance isn't that great? Also, what would I need to be subscribed to with EES to get Endpoint? I already subscribe all the usual OS, SQL, Exchange, Office etc Cheers Andrew
  16. You can add --user-data-dir="r:\Chrome\User Data" to the chrome shortcut, works fine here without issue (R is our user home directory) Andrew
  17. At my site, I have 24 hour access, all the keys and alarm codes and can get in if my servers have issues. The LT know I work long hours and are happy for me to claim it back when I need to. They also encouraged me to help with the football teams (I'm a coach and referee) so am often working up the sports field on a Wednesday afternoon or travelling with the 1st team. I'm really lucky to work in a place that appreciates what we do.
  18. It's burnt into basebrd.dll.mui and is a sod to remove. I found instructions here:- http://blog.kevinpayravi.com/2015/07/30/windows-10-education-edition-watermark/ I suspect the education version is watermarked to stop it being installed on home pc's
  19. AFAIK the connect.ini must be in the same folder as the SIMS client, not sure a redirect folder works (but happy to be proved wrong...)
  20. Mine is as follows where SIMSSERVER= your windows sims server, SIMSDB= your SQL server and SIMS= your database on the SQL server [sIMSConnection] ServerName=SIMSSERVER\SIMSDB DatabaseName=SIMS commandtimeout=100000
  21. Error 0 is usually a missing or incorrect connect.ini that should be located in the same folder as pulsar.exe
  22. Just for a laugh I in-place upgraded a freshly built staff win 7 pc this morning to see how much of a mess it would create. Amazed to find that after the upgrade the win 10 pc was still connected to the domain and 99% of the installed software (O2K, CS4, SIMS etc) all still worked, nw printers included. While I will be building a win 10 image from scratch it was still pretty impressive.
  23. Hi Last job with 2003 before it's finally decommissioned... I need to move my KMS server that has faithfully sat on 2003 (activating Windows 7 and Office) to a new 2012R2 DC. I've seen lots of conflicting advice on the interweb as to how best to do this, does anyone have an idiots guide for an idiot to follow? I have the KMS keys from the old server so hopefully shouldn't take long...? Cheers Andrew
  24. +1 for Paint.Net A lot of my students use it and I find I use it most of the time when I'm doing photo editing. Andrew
  25. Sophos licence runs out in a few weeks so decision time!!! Really like Avast and really tempted to switch (even taking into account how much of a git sophos is to uninstall...). Just before I do, would one of you be kind enough to post your workstation policy settings so I can double check mine and make sure I haven't done anything silly on my test PCs? Happy to receive as a pm if you don't want to share publicly. Cheers Andrew
